Steve was the right coach for Rutgers when he was hired. Danny was the right coach for UConn. He says he has his dream job. I believe him. Danny might have left Rutgers after an NCAA year. Steve is never leaving. Danny is never leaving UConn. UConn is a much easier job with loads of Championships and NBA stars to tout. Right now and with the inevitable recency bias the Big East is tougher at the top and will be tough again next year buttressed by Pitino who literally has entered into the discussion with every major NYC 2024 kid. It's staggering.I still see Seton Hall getting victimized and Syracuse getting really hurt.

Danny could also have been the right coach for Rutgers. He was ready to sign on. He will have a great career.

Pike is right for Rutgers too. With good potential going forward.

Depends on what you mean by easier. "Easier sell" = higher expectations to deliver.

This is exactly how I see it

Syracuse and seton hall having “sone new juice “ in recruiting from new coaches is massively hurt by pitino arrival in St. John’s.

The wild card in the changing landscape is cooley and Georgetown (how much can they upgrade quickly in the honey moon) …and where does nova land

Jay wright used to walk in and get any suburban Philly 4-5 star kid he wanted …since he left , the vibe has massively changed

Watch Bethea at Archbishop wood. A litmus test for Villanova right now….Jay would walk in any get him if he wanted …(and he has passed on a couple over the years , see Rashol Diggins from Archbishop wood)….now , it’s feel like it’s free game

Won’t all the above hurt RU also?

Will RU be hurt by Pitino hire?

I am not quite sure Syracuse is hurting, they have some talented pieces, I think Boeheim mailed in this past season. I have no idea what Adrian Autry can or will do, but they did pick off 2022 5* kid, JJ Starling, who was at ND this past season and scored around 12PPG.

The concept of UConn is 75% based on the return to the Big East and 25%, shedding some players that didn't fit (Corey Floyd Je and Diggins) and getting smaller school portal kids who didn't need the ball to be important.

UConn in the Big East, damages Cuse, St John's and especially Seton Hall. But I don't think this is a situation that impacts RU. As much as St John's will win immediately with Pitino, it is going to be a wash in the Big East. St John's up, Seton Hall, Villanova and Providence, all potentially down in the next year or 2.

Why would UConn be Hurley’s dream job? He didn’t play there. I would not assume that Kentucky or UNC can’t come along in a few years and snatch him away. Pitino left Kentucky. Rich Rod left his alma mater West Va after getting them one WTF game away from the championship (where UConn stands right now—they just need to take care of biz to get to the title game). I never thought Schiano would ever leave. I don’t think Hurley staying at UConn is something anyone can bank on. We cannot assume he’s Joe Paterno.

FWIW some recruits care about the character of their coach… Gavin is one of them.
Weird statement. Has Hurley ever done anything bad?

Who are bad character coaches in your view? How have recruits responded to them?

Bad character I won't comment on.
But his sideline behavior leaves something to be desired. I haven't watched their tourney games, but during the season it is a frequent mention by neutral announcers.

On First Take right now:

“Dan Hurley is one of the best coaches there is in the game of college basketball today. His team literally feeds off the energy. Youwanna go see a coach who’s animated? A coach who you feel like is playing on the floor but is actually coaching on the sideline? That’s who dan hurley is right.”

i'm gonna go out on a limb and say 17 and 18 year old kids don't give a **** if Danny looks unprofessional at times. their glasses are a little different than the glasses old guys have on here. he's passionate as can be and wants to win and isn't that concerned with how his outbursts look.

From another Jersey guy who left...I bet they are friends off the court. Did Bobby and a Jay overlap at Duke, certainly together in that network?

Not exactly a neutral source.

Why are you presenting for UConn's Danny Hurley on a Rutgers board?

He is a polarizing figure around here. That's unlikely to change.

There is never a wrap on this....just like there wasn't a wrap on us making NCAAs.

There is NO way anyone can know how someone ticks. There is NO way to know how the college game evolves.

1. Would Pike take the UCONN job?
2. Would Pike take a top 10 job?
3. Would Pike leave if offered a NBA job?
4. With his youngest soon to leave the nest how much is he tied in to the area?
5. Will NIL ever get to the point where he feels he can't succeed at RU?
6. Will Danny Hurley get another job?
7. How important is $ to Pikiell?

I agree it appears Pike is our coach for the next 10 years, but it isn't wrapped up.

I will add.......it is obvious the game is evolving and now more than ever the player holds the cards. I think the way Pike operates the program and how he coaches becomes very attractive to many players. Players don't need a rat like Mick Cronin or Tom Izzo screaming in their face.

I think programs would be very wise to hire coaches like Pike or even Pike himself.

I don't think we rely on NYC/NY recruiting as much as other teams like Cuse and SHU.

Right now how we stand in recruiting strengths,
NEPSAC, TJ Thompson
DMV, Hobbs
NJ/PA, Knight

Not sure who opened the Georgia, Cali, Ohio, Florida, or other states other than Pike's coaching style, results, or being in the B1G. I'm fine with how our recruiting stands and going forward.

I didn't re-read but I took it as Pitino was the one with character issues.

It’s a tough one but I still think NJ/NY is pretty critical to us. If we look at the last three recruiting classes we’ve really struggled (cliff NJ). It seems Gavin and Ace are two recruiting outliers as the staff hs very good separate perosnal relationships. This is a good thing and is not to say we wouldn’t have done even better in Nj/nyc (maybe we just add CT area bow too because of pike).

Just to say I think Nj Ny is still critical to long term Rutgers success.

Let’s be real — there are only two story lines to the final four: (1) Miami and NIL; and (2) how the heck did all these lower seeded teams get here. There are no great coaches in the mix so it appears that Danny is the beneficiary of the media trying to find story #3. Father was a famous coach, DH yells and screams, etc. BTW, if Kansas St managed to make the Final Four everyone would be talking about J Tang instead.

Talking heads just filling airtime.

how fast one forgets-- St Peters story and Shaheen -- then he goes to SHU--he's the best most agressive now a year later he and SHU won't be able to recruit or compete with others for recruits. it's all fleeting BS

Hurley has the 5th ranked class for 2023, 4-4 star and 1-5 star. Calipari coming to SJ. Count me concerned.
