Great, great analysis. Well put.Very enjoyable article to read
If what NU wanted was to just be a program that was not embarrassing on the court, we would have kept Carmody. He was perfectly competent at that.
We went a different direction. We made the tournament. We now have shiny new facilities. Other than admissions, close to every other road block is gone.
We have a coach that took us dancing. But also failed miserably at repeating it the following year despite being ranked in pre-season. Playing at All State, loss of glue guy, other teams respecting us more, injuries/illnesses, blah blah blah. He had plenty of excuses. None of which invalidates the fact we had close to the same team as the year before with players that were supposed to be better with one more season under their belts. They did not get better. Other teams did.
Worst of all, we failed miserably at staying old.
21-22. Kopp and Nance will be seniors. Buie/Beran/Young/Jones will be juniors. If any of them is not, they transferred and that’s a terrible sign. If we fail that year, we should get another coach. No excuses. Injuries? Every team has them, that’s why a good team is deep enough to soften the blow.
No school invests $110 mil in building the coolest little arena around, no school builds shiny new practice facilities, just to not be an embarrassment on the court/field.
21-22. That’s the deadline. Beyond that we will be a cliche of “doing the same and expecting different results”.
At least we got the NCAA tournament monkey off our back. That is a big deal for NU.
Exiting the decade worse than entering. Except the venue is nicer. Nothing else.
