We fired a coach that appeared to have the program trending downward . He had double digit wins in three of six years . We also fired another coach that had double digit wins in three of his seven years and always won nine more games or more ( and was a bit of a psychopath ). We did not fire these coaches because of objective reasons we fired them because of subjective reasons . NU is looking for a magic coach. Generally you don't know that when you hire them. You might think so,
If you're looking for the magic coach , Urban Nick and others are staying where they already are . So the dump truck pile of money approach probably won't work.
It's too bad The fanbase and the media treat this program like it's in an existential crisis.

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never is, but always to be blessed:
The soul, uneasy and confined from home,
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

So you believe Nebraska is not in an existential crisis? Having two losing seasons in three years and having 11 committed recruits is a reason to be ok? If that is your opinion that is fine I just want to make sure I understand your comment.

We haven't had another losing season yet, and after watching the rest of the West, we can manage 7 wins (maybe 8 if we win the bowl game). We are on a lot of highly ranked recruits who are waiting to see the future of our coach before they commit here. Yes, there are things that need changed, and Riley may not be the guy that can change them, but we should let the season play out before throwing dirt on Riley's grave.

I used the term "magic coach" when we in the period of the Pelini divorce. It's pretty clear that we didn't hire one of those. Consistency across the roster was coming apart under Pelini. Regardless of who is the coach, that needed to be addressed and still needs to be addressed. We need more difference makers. JD Spielman shows signs of being one. Possibly Carlos Davis. There may more from the younger side of the roster that emerge in the next year.
This is how I see it:
Callahan left some difference makers on the roster and some other kids who were ready to play good FB. Pelini added some to the mix, but recruiting busts and attrition got things out of whack. Eichorst hired the anti-Pelini and (I am now speculating a bit) thought the hire could win 8-10 games at NU, just like Pelini did. Riley proceeded to bring the bulk of his staff to Lincoln and then last year realized he had to up the ante to stay on board. So in year three we shift from a QB in TA that could at least make money with his legs to a statue, go full up with Langs O, and make a substantial shift to a 3-4 with players recruited to a 4-3. And it's pretty clear that regardless of what kind of offense or defense we play, we have a roster that is not sufficient to consistently compete with the top end of our league.
The new AD will decide Riley's fate at season's end. Regardless of whether he is retained or not, work remains to be done on the roster. But we are not in an "existential crisis". If retained, Riley and Diaco will attempt to improve the players on the roster and recruit new ones and we will play a season next year. A new coach will bring in a new staff, possibly bring some recruits with him and begin to transition the team to whatever systems he uses. Then they will play a season next year.
I am disappointed with the play of the team this year and I concede that those who call for a coaching change have a rationale for their stance. But regardless of who is coaching this team, we need more athletes on the roster to compete with the class of our league.

Man, I can’t tell if you’re being sincere with these thoughts, whether you’re the Mike Riley PR team, or if you’re trolling.

Just an eternal optimist.
Nothing wrong with being an optimist. In fact, we need more of you in this world.

When it comes to college football and Nebraska football, however, optimism will stand in the way of logic. Riley is toast.

Let’s start over. Again.

I don't want a magic coach, I want someone who is going to make this program a perennial top 15 team at the end of each season like Wisconsin is, I want a shot at B1G Championship every other year. I want a Rose Bowl appearance every 5 years or so. I want to see a Natty before I die. That's what I want

Nebraska is going to have to be patient and stick with a coach through a tough season at some point. The idea that we will hire the right coach and be a Top 10 contender every year, like we were under TO is wacko. See Notre Dame, I’m pretty sure they are glad they stuck with Kelly after last years 4-8 season. I’m not saying this in terms of Riley, as much as fan perceptions and the reality of CFB today.

Has anyone suggested Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, or Urban Meyer will leave their current jobs and come to Nebraska?

They don't have to. But there are plenty of coaches who will come here. The challenge is to find the right one. That's why you cast a wide net to find out who is interested. You don't simply focus on the one guy your conference rival recommends to you. If NU's search firm sends a message to every current college head coach, I bet a huge percentage of them will have their agent at least follow up to find out more.

At least the path is clear for MR. The teams in the west are not good other than Wisky. If they cant win 4 of the next five then its hard for me to say Im seeing improvement. If there's not much improvement they need to do whats best for the program and move on to a new staff.

I just don't know how an optometrist helps us. All kidding aside, you keep picking what is perceived as the best candidate after doing a ton of due diligence by somebody who knows what the hell they're doing. (see Bill Moos "what's the record?") until the best candidate morphs in to a great coach. Sorry, no other way. Simple, but evidently somebody hasn't been "executing" lol.

we're no more looking for a better situation, then anyone else in life...

if previous coaches had more value than we had ascertained, then why did the end up where they are...?
