Interesting situation on Saturday that occurred which made me wonder if it had happened to others on the Board. Because I busted a spring.....

So I hosted a party to watch the Duke - UVA Game and invited over friends and family (12 adults 4 kids). I provided Pizzas (4) and Wings (60), Chips, Pasta Salad, good beer (Troegs) as well as swill (Miller Lite) as well as Bourbon, Rum, Vodka etc. All on my dime, in my house etc.

Everyone in attendance knows from their personal knowledge, (not to mention the Duke Man Cave we were in) that I am a Duke Grad, and a DIE HARD and this game was important to me ...obvious as I hosted a watch party.

One of the guests (Sister-In-Law's long term BF), about 10 min into the game starts ACTIVELY rooting and cheering on the 'Hoos.???

NOW- here is my glitch. Boyfriend X has NO vested interest in Virginia, Is not from Virginia (from Pittsburgh), Has no relatives who attended UVA, Did not attend Virginia (went to PSU), dos not have a grandma or aunt named Virginia etc...you get the point.

He comes to my place, eats my food, drinks my booze etc and actively roots against me and my team... Does this violate some sort of Man law? I lost my damn mind at about the 2min mark until halftime (UVA cut it to five and he was whooping it up). Called him on it and that he was being an ignorant bastard for coming to my place, taking advantage of my hospitality and then actively rooting for my team to lose. I mean I was in his grill close enough to count cavities. Called him a few choice names and inquired if he had ever been in a locker room with Jerry Sandusky... He spent the rest of the night sulking in the dining room eating BBQ Chips...

After the game several of the other attendees agreed it was ******** for him to do that (all guys) but of course the wife's sister was chaffed. The wife doesn't care a bit..She doesn't like him much and knows I am in a better mood when Duke wins.

My Question(s) for the group
A) Has this happened to you?
B) What was your reaction?
C) What do you feel is appropriate penance for the offender (BE CREATIVE)?

I hate watching Duke games with anyone. I find myself occasionally getting lost in a conversation.. and then I lose the details of the game. I want to know every nuance of the game. How players are defending away from the ball, boxing out, hedges, backcuts, hustle plays. Can't get all that with company.

That being said, I think you probably do need to ask him why is actively rooting for UVA when he's in the home of someone who clearly is all in on Duke. Not sure I could keep my composure because Duke games already get me riled up with emotions. Might have to remove yourself after a tv timeout, calm down a bit, and then calmly interrogate the motives of the culprit... Going forward, you might need to properly vet all attendees. I don't think I could tolerate that nonsense.

I've never had this happen and I'm sorry it did to you. It violates all kinds of laws and I would've ripped him a new like you, then told him and his wife to GTFO out of MY HOUSE. It'd be different if you had invited a UK or UNC fan because well, you know to expect. But just random non-fan? No way in hell I'd put up with it.

I will watch Duke with other Duke fans. I get heated, and sometimes my dog will leave the room rather than listen to my shrill and loud cursing. I prefer to be alone, but can suffer others as long as they are not anti-Duke. UNCheat fans are barred, even if bound and gagged. Ditto Cornturkey.

You handled the situation well and Calmly. I may have forced the guy to leave, maybe physically if necessary with the help of a few understanding friends. Not fun to get trolled in your own house.

Nope that has never happened to me because I watch my boys alone. In the cave secluded from civilization. I commend you though for not putting him out on his head.

I assume anyone who isn’t a Duke fan will actively root against Duke if they watch them. I have not watched a Duke game with anyone other than my wife and kids since a similar situation in the 01 final four when a longtime Kansas fan was actively rooting for Maryland.

I watch by myself as well. My girlfriend knows to leave me in silence as I pace back and forth in the living room, yelling obscenities, mumbling to myself and occasionally cheering.

I typically watch sports by myself when I'm invested in one of the teams.

All who know me...know watching a Duke game is at your own risk. Those who don’t will get fair warning by myself or my wife. “Under no circumstances(especially) if Duke is losing are you to poke at the bear”. This rule has maintained friendships and family harmony for years, might I suggest you make a plaque for your man cave so there is no ambiguity.

My wife is from Va., Bassett , to be exact. So, I pull for Va. when they are not playing Duke. I really think she pulls for Duke even when they play Va. But, I am easily fooled by women so what do I know.

After I answered you , I know the book you are referring too now. I think my wife has a copy. I had never been there until last year, went with her to a class reunion. Town is really depressed now. Reminds me of a lot of other towns, Elkin, NC , comes to mind. Really prosperous at one time, now nothing much left. She lived there in the 60's.

This is a pretty tricky one. On one hand, I feel as though as host (and providing food and drink) it's simply not his place to act like he did. But, maybe you didn't have to react that way, either? I don't know....just sounds like you let him get the best of you. My dad told me something once that has always stuck with me....don't let an ******* turn you into an *******, unless that ******* is endangering you or someone you love....if he is, then ******* up!

Yeah... I sort of feel like you usually should respond to ******* with an equal level of *******... if you were in his face that close, you may have ramped it up a bit further than it needed to be? But that's a dick move, on his part... it wouldn't ever occur to me to do that... have some damn respect, you know?

I can't even watch games with other Duke fans, let alone non-Duke fans. I know myself very well. I am a live wire during games. I never host watch parties in my apartment for this reason but if I did, you can bet your *** 1) it will be clearly stated that it's a Duke fan watch party and 2) if I don't know personally that you're a fan of the better blue, you're not coming. I spent enough time as a Duke fan in Tarhole country at the peak of their arrogant douchebaggery to subject myself to watching games with non-Duke fans. Fortunately, most of my friends are Duke fans so when I do want to have some company during games, it's not too hard to find.

Yeah, in terms of people I know, everyone knows the deal... there is exactly zero ******* around about Duke allowed. Zero.

I watch Duke games by myself. For some reason if I watch a game while I'm at work I just sit a pull for Duke without saying anything or getting excited. I work with nothing but heel fans and it's just not worth it. OFC

Many years ago before I got married and even before we got Bill Foster a lot of my friends and I would watch NFL Monday Night Football together and it was fun because of the different teams we all were fans of. We had Colt fans, Redskin fans, Cowboy fans, Packer fans and others so it was hard to have a majority. We also got together for ACC games. There was the one or two Duke fans or one or two State fans. The rest were heel fans. They tripled the State fans and Duke fans. This was the early to mid 70's years. State for some of those years had Thompson, Burleson and the gang. These were the Bucky Waters / Neal McGeachy years. It was tough on this Duke fan. Talk about ganging up. I guess that's why I enjoy watching Duke games by myself. OFC

I mean the more I think about it I’m legit getting mad. I mean the balls or ignorance of someone to come to a mans house and “out loud” root against another mans team in his damn house eating his food and all that....What did he say after you confronted him?

I could care less who people root for. I have no problem watching Duke-UNC with tar heel fans. All I ask is that you pay attention to the game or go in the other room and keep it down.

Also, providing food/drinks doesn’t change the situation one bit. That’s what a good host should do. If the party is open to non-Duke fans, then you have to expect there will be people cheering against Duke. Make em a nice strong drink, and when Duke wins, blow them a kiss on their way out.

If the guy was a UVA fan that is one thing. And, you would have known and expected it. To have no stake in the game and knowing that you are a BIG Duke fan and then to act like that is total assholehood. It seems like he did it on purpose, which is really disrespectful, even provocative. I like DJ Sr.'s advice. Cant say that I agree with getting in a guest's face over it. I think we all need to be better than that. Would never allow the F er in my house again. Calls for a really smart dog that goes over and pisses on his leg and then gives you that knowing look.
