He’s not my first choice but it makes sense. Can play D and can shoot the 3
I trust Pope's judgment. I think that he values perimeter defense now that we had to suffer through a season of limited ball penetration defense.

He averages 1.7 steals per game, slightly more than OO/Butler, shoots 38% on 3s, decent but not spectular assist-turnover ratio. Good size at 6-5/195.

ALL of those games occurred AFTER Feb 8th. Scored double figures in 10 straight to close out the year.
Guess we are all on the “smith” lookout for the next few days or weeks but I can’t say this young man from Georgia would give me a lot of confidence going in to next year at the point.

This kid will be a junior. Williams a sophomore. Freshmen coming in. Is Pope building a team for a run two years out?
Going from being in on the elite PGs in the portal to this in 24 hours is kind of concerning.
So much for superstar portal players.

I would not like him as PG1.
Perhaps as PG3 as a combo guard who plays most his minutes off the ball, but can be that 3rd primary ball handler when needed (backing up Lewis and TBD at the 1 spot, and getting most of his minutes off the ball as a combo guard backup to Oweh).
If THAT were the scenario, I'm okay with it.

Is he my favorite option? Probably not. But he’s not going from playing 30 plus minutes in the SEC in 14 straight games to being a bench piece as a former top 75 recruit with multiple seasons under his belt.
I’m so fascinated with all the roster construction ideas. Maybe a bigger lead guard could be of interest if they get more finesse bigs?
Competition is going to be immense for the top 50-75 players in the portal. The mass exodus from college basketball is going to create a ton of need for rosters with NIL to blow at a lot of places.

I like demary, he is already proven he can compete in SEC. He has potential to be all sec 1st team caliber player in year 4.

He seems more like a guy would take last year with not many options left in the portal. If he is our starting point guard something went wrong.
It amazes me that some on here don’t.
Pope stated when he got here that he understands the assignment. He is the one who is paid to produce. He and his staff go about things in a very analytical way.
Is it guaranteed that he will have the success here we all want him to have? Of course not. But what is guaranteed is that he will make what he believes are the absolute best decisions possible. And since I believe him to be both more intelligent and more motivated than John Calipari (at least at this point in their respective careers), I’m choosing to trust the guy. Not that I really have a choice anyway… but the constant skepticism and second-guessing of some does make me chuckle.
Like everyone else said Demary isn't coming here or anywhere else to come off the bench. If he plays for us next year he will 100% be a starter.
