Seen where Goodman says he will not commit to army but instead go to the NBA. Has anyone heard of this? Also I thought he had already signed a contract with the army

I seem to remember reading an article sometime during the season that said he might go the Army Reserves or Army National Guard route so he can pursue both of his dreams of being in the military and being in the NBA but I could be wrong

Yeah I read the same thing. It seems to be the path he's taking and I hope it works out for him!

Marshall is a very confident young man, and I for one, have no doubt he will succeed at whatever he chooses to pursue. He has an awful lot of experience to fall back on, in his family, Coach K, and the Military. Pretty good pool for assistance, and I hope everything works out well for a great representative of Duke University. Thanks to Marshall, Mason, and Miles for a lot of memories.
Go Duke!!

Huge Marshall fan but I just don't see him making an NBA roster. I absolutely think he should go for it but I expect to see him army green this time next year. Makin the Devils proud either way.

I'm not trying to hate on Marshall, but the only way he's going to the nba is if he's buying a ticket. Same can be said for Marcus lee. If he stays in the draft he might as well learn to speak another language since he will have to play overseas

A friend of mine in the Nuggets organization said that Marshall was a very intriguing prospect to NBA teams. That was at last years Acc tournament. Teams see size, strength, athleticism, and improvement. It also helps that his brothers have expanded their games in the league. He has a shot on the free agent market.

There are players who have played in the NBA and current players in the NBA that Marshall is just as good as. It depends on what a team needs. Look at hansbrough for an example. I guess the Hornheels feel a need for him. A plus for Marshall is not only his size. He is not only tall but he's a stud. Got some arms and shoulders on him and he does run the court well. Add to that he's such a hard worker and with a great attitude and his willingness to do what is ask of him I believe he will get a great shot to be on a roster if it is his desire. OFC

I agree, Sky. 2 Plumlees are playing in the NBA, don't see why there can't be 3.

It seems there was the same conversation when Miles entered the league, minus the Army part. No way he was going to make a roster. Look at him now. Marshall will play in the league for a while when he gets there. Marshalls game really flourished this year and this was the only year where he was the focal point in the middle. Will he be an all-star, probably not, will he have a long career and make lots of money. I certainly think so. You cant top his desire and he will give his heart to whomever drafts him. He is a warrior. Nothing but the best for the big man.

Everyone needs to remember that this isn't the NBA of 20 years ago where many teams built around their bigs. Now-a-days, most teams play 4 shooters and 1 big guy that is used mainly for screens/rebounding/defense.
If your around 7 feet tall, can run, dunk, set screens, and rebound than you got a shot, and Marshall can do all of those things.
My biggest concern for Marshall would be rim protection and defense.
The defense I think he can figure out due to his heart and desire, I don't see him getting any more athletic though so not sure he will ever be a rim protector.

Given the right situation, he's got a shot.

People always kill K for having his big men focus on setting screens early in their careers, but there is a reason for it. If they can master that early, everything else comes easier and the league wants bigs who set good screens. That's a focus right now. Any Duke big man has a shot at the league simply because K teaches the little things first that can get you hired. From there, you can use your last few years to expand your game should you stick around long enough.

Marshall has done nothing but improve during his time at Duke, so much so that I'm not even entirely sure he has reached his pinnacle yet. I still think the best basketball Marshall will ever play is ahead of him. Because of that, the way his bros have progressed, and many other things such as that fire/passion/drive we are all aware of that I'd be willing to eat my hat if he doesn't land on an NBA roster, D League at the bare minimum.

I dug up this old thread only because I saw some eggspurt's top 150 "big board" today, and MP3 wasn't on it. Do you folks really think there are 150 better pro prospects than Marshall? Just curious.

Well, probably not....but still very much improved. He also dealt with a lot of injuries in his career. That certainly played a part in his (lack) of development his first few years on campus.
I was sort of kidding to a joking manner but he scored two points in 2012-13, hows about:

Maybe the most improved Duke player I have ever seen.

Yes he was. Lol...

I could watch that shot over and over. You can just see the joy and love his team mates had for him by that reaction. I have a friend that's been a season ticket holder for over years and he said it was the loudest he ever heard at Cameron. OFC

Marshall will make a roster because of his size, energy, price and attitude.

He will cost an NBA team no money to sign, has two brothers who exceeded expectations and will work hard as a zero maintenance character guy getting limited to no minutes.

Marshall truly had one of the worst years imaginable for a scholarship player when he was a freshman. In 50 minutes of action, he was 1-8 from the floor, 0-8 on free throws, 11 rebounds, 5 turnovers, and 2 points.

As a senior, MP3 put up solid numbers consisting of 8.3 ppg, 8.6 reb, 1.6 blocks, 68.8 fg%. He may not be the most improved player in NCAA history, but I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that looked like they didn't belong on a D1 team, to potentially earning a roster spot in the NBA.

Look at how far ahead Plumlee is of Brice Johnson.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/1...en-simmons-brandon-ingram-more-2016-nba-draft

Don't buy it, but it's funny.

It's not as crazy as it sounds. Roy's player development ain't exactly stellar. Evidence speaks for itself. Sure , K has NBA success with the OAD-types. But look at some of the others who don't fall into the "can't miss" category. Both Plumlees , JJ , Lance Thomas , Shav , McRoberts , Seth Curry , Chris Duhon...it woulda shocked no one if those guys didn't pan out in the league. Personally , I didn't think Miles , Seth , Shav and Lance would even sniff an NBA roster much less play and contribute for multiple seasons. THAT'S the measure of player development. Heck , everyone knew Jabari would ball out. But Lance? Josh? Miles? True , they're not superstars but they can play. It's a testament to K that NBA scouts would rank a role-player such as Marshall Plumlee over a unx "star" like Brice Johnson. Which of Roy's "lesser" players has had a solid NBA career? I'm not sayin' one doesn't exist but I can't think of one. His NBA "successes" were THE best players on his teams...Lawson , Zeller , Henson , MWilliams , Barnes...

Unless you are a truly great all-around player, the NBA really comes down to having a niche with one particular skill, developing it to the max and learning to play within that. Maybe it's being an on the ball defender. Or a rebounder. Or a 3 pt. specialist. Or the ability to pass as a PG. The poster boy here is Dennis Rodman.

You still need to work on other parts but it's having that one thing that will get you in the league. I think that's where several players on Duke - and players from other colleges - who didn't look like All-Americans at the college level are able to find a place in the NBA.
