2019: Through 5 Games...Forget to carry a 1 when adding so these are correct (Chump)
Rushing: 76/315/3 TD's/4 Lost Fumbles...4.1 YPC/63 YPG
Passing: 75/126/1100/7 TD's/5 Int's/220 YPG/Completion Rate 59.5%

2018: Through 5 Games (Didn't include Michigan game since he tried to play hurt and only lasted a half.)
Rushing: 74/427/4 TD's/4 Lost Fumbles...5.8 YPC/85 YPG
Passing: 114/168/1411/9 TD's/4 Int's/284 YPG/Completion Rate 68%

Your eye's don't deceive you, as there has been a big drop off, in rushing yards and completion rate, this year.

Yikes, that's a pretty big dropoff. I think most of the blame rests squarely on the OL's shoulders, but opponents are aware of our lack of experience & playmakers at RB, TE, and WR so it is much easier for them to gameplan around containing 2AM.

great post, except he's run for 315 yards (4.1ypc), not 215.

at least get the stats right.

thread would be a mic dropper if anyone said, "I think our QB is way better than last year"

It's every living person on Earths fault except Martinez.
If not for them he would be awesome. But because of them he's struggling.

If they all just died he would be the Bestest ever.

It’s no one else’s fault except Martinez. Even though there are 10 other players on the field they bear no responsibility to Martinez’s dip in stats.

Even though they aren’t helping Martinez is the worstest ever.

Or maybe it’s somewhere in between.

His throws and decisions have been bad this year regardless of OL
.... but OL is obviously contributing to the problem.
Our OL last year had a rough start of season as well, so...

Yeah I forgot to add a "1" so the YPC is up to 4.1. Passing is correct. Completion rate has dropped off quite a bit.

an abysmal outing like last week's will do that. before that game, completion percentage was exactly the same as last year.

also, 4.1 ypc is exactly the same as wandale, who can do no wrong in this board's eyes

Convenient how you excluded the Michigan game.

I rewatched the offense’s first half (I may like to torture myself but watching D woulda been too much).

A couple things worth noting not typically mentioned:
TE’s should not be forgotten when discussing OL. Blocking woes also fall on them like a play where Stoll gave up early on a guy he was blocking. Just an attitude problem there.

Martinez criticized for passing so much, but his Read Option decision on one play was ridiculous (wish I could include the pics I have)....
3rd & 1: Wandale comes in motion for a jet sweep...Play starts with bad snap distracting his eyes from reading defense, but obviously defense will be drawn to the motion. OSU has 2 DL and middle LB slanting toward motion. LB took off like a rocket to get in backfield outside Jaimes while 2 DL are beating their blocks in the same direction. As a result of OSU following Wandale, we had 4 OL right in front of Martinez with exactly 0 defenders for about 15-20 yards upfield and only one DL being blocked on the other side being taken out of the play.
Despite the snap, Martinez has the ball with enough time and is staring at this situation unfolding (4 OL outlining massive hole in the middle) but still hands it off. 3rd & 1 !! Wandale tackled for a loss by LB who left middle vacant. Even if AMart is only reading the DL beating is block towards Wandale he still should’ve kept it.
Now I’m respectful of the speed this all happens, but this is what he’s trained to read. It likely was a 8-10 yd gain up the middle given OSU closing speed.
Those types of decisions need to improve and I think they will, but in the meantime, that was the difference between a first down and giving the ball back to OSU and was frankly an easy read.

Similarly vs NIU on a 3rd & 8 I believe, he rolled out and actually completed a difficult tight window pass to Spielman, but I think he was double covered. All the while Noa was running wide open no defender around right in front of him. That was the throw.
He’s still young and I think with film study he’ll get better with these types of things.

Martinez is obviously unable to make correct reads on the read option as he is wrong much more often than he is right!

unless you know the play is a read and not a called handoff, please refrain from forming opinions based on your assumptions.

thanks.

I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.

The kid has regressed, he's got deer in the headlights syndrome, and he makes bad decisions. He's over-throwing his targets (sailing it) so his form has gotten worse as well.

Great QBs throw their WR open and make the right reads. He's doing neither.

Frost should definitely incorporate more I-formation in this offense, start putting Martinez in obvious rushing downs, and take the pressure off the kid. He can't handle it. Bottom line.

Agree with this here. People seem to call every handoff a read option/zone read when it’s out of the shotgun. I’m betting quite a few are designed handoffs/keepers.

I’ll admit to being a common idiot on a board full of assumptions, but call me skeptical that a long delayed handoff (held in the belly of the back while slightly going with him) on a play commonly referred to as read/option would involve taking the option out of the equation, which innately limits some of the potential for success.
Seems like the equivalent of saying go ahead and throw an INT to a guy who’s covered because that was the play call... in which case you abort the call like every successful QB would.

The play is between 5:00-6:00 min left in second quarter I think. ...Feel free to opinion away.

p.s. Love you guys- GBR!!

Convenient how you excluded the Michigan game.

He did state the reason and I think its a fair one. He only played half that game and played with a twisted knee.

Now obviously you can't get an accurate rushing assessment of a dual threat QB when the dude has a twisted knee. At least THAT part SHOULD be obvious to you.

The passing stats maybe you could complain about being left off, but again he only played a half and again it doesn't do anyone any justice trying to get good information to base it off of skewed information.....In other words setting to throw also requires two good knees for a good measurable piece of information.

You shouldn't lose your job due to an injury either, and if you're evaluating a player, even for kicks, then obviously that game should probably be held out.

It didn’t help Martinez and the team that he was given the keys to the car this year without anyone questioning it. A 4-8 QB shouldn’t be considered a no brainer for next year’s starter. The staff did him a disservice by allowing him to coast by in the spring and in fall camp. He had to work his *** off last year to win the job.

And forget the stats, he just doesn’t look as smooth. And there’s a ton of other reasons why that could be, but regardless of what you think, he has yet to show he can consistently win. That’s just a fact

Just for interest’s sake, do you have access to how the OL has graded this year vs last? I would be interested to see how the receivers and rbs graded as well. The QB takes lots of blame and some of it is deserved but I would love to sit in film study to see the whole picture... but unfortunately, that is part of the job description is to take a beating for stuff that may or may not be your fault..
