Richard Deitsch, sports media senior writer: Albert retires as the most famous NBA broadcaster in history. His career lasted seven decades, including a national role with NBC Sports for multiple decades where he served as the play-by-play announcer for the NBA on NBC, including calling multiple NBA Finals.
Albert’s long broadcasting career also includes calling Super Bowls, Stanley Cup Finals, MLB, college basketball, boxing, tennis, horse racing and notably, as the voice of the New York Knicks from 1967 to 2004. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery charges in 1997, which cost him his NBC Sports job. Had that happened in the era of #MeToo, Albert likely would not have found a second life with Turner.
As a broadcaster, he was manically prepared, with a sardonic sense of humor and impeccable timing. If you hear “yes” in an NBA game after a made basket, it is hard not to think of Albert and his legacy.
I'll probably watch his final game.
