I've been hanging by a thread. Money has been corrupting the sport for a long time, making a mockery of "student" athletes. Then, all of the violent sex crimes that were swept under the rug at countless universities. I used to follow several "schools" in multiple sports, but not now. I've been hanging on to NU because I am fairly sure their ideals haven't been compromised badly. I fear that they will either need to compromise or be relegated to G5 level or lower. Athletes have probably always got certain considerations, but, to use an academic peer like Duke basketball - what's the point? The players are only there because of the one-and-done" rule. They are caricatures of students.

To be clear, I believe the players deserve compensation. For coaches to make $10M and players to get bupkus is wrong. They generate the revenue and deserve it; however, the NIL is just a way for bagmen and other corrupt types to bribe players. I fear it will not end well.

Nothing good will come of this. My days of following college sports are numbered.
People have been betting on college sports for over 100 years. Athletes have been getting paid under the table for just as long. Count me among those grateful that the days of leaning on "amateurism" for the sake of appearances are over.

When you live in a weed and sports betting state, the only things advertised are weed and sports betting.

I briefly watched the Pistons last night. At one point their rotating courtside videoboard was advertising one of the online sportsbooks, immediately next to a painted-on-court logo for another one.

I don’t think the Pistons have any weed sponsors tho.

NIL plays into the narrative of "immediate gratification" that pervades our society. The Northwestern selling point of a "40-year investment" may be drowned out by it.

If by immediate gratification of our society you mean “capitalist needs” then I agree with you.

A lot of these kids won’t go on to the NFL and are risking their health for our entertainment. Let’s cheer for them to maximize their moneymaking while they can.

This isn’t even an NIL deal, it’s just a sponsorship (by a legal and popular sports industry) directly with the school. What’s even remotely interesting interesting about this?
