Interesting point. Almost doesn't seem possible that our running backs got so few carries Saturday. I thought the Houston game resembled last year's game with Texas. Now I understand why.

Yup. And before anyone brings up the chicken/egg argument that Baker only rushes in those games more because we're losing...

Before Houston's last drive of the 1st half when OU is leading 17-16, Mayfield had 5 rushes while Perine/Mixon had 6 rushes.

But does the oline get dominated, or are they not given the opportunity to focus and get a rhythm?
It's gotta be frustrating trying to block for a guy that you can never guess where he's at.

Yep, and I bet a good percentage of Baker's rushes weren't called by Riley. He looked like he was ready to run at the drop of a hat. But still, Perine and Mixon getting so few touches is just not right, IMO. Would that be on Riley? Just Texas game 2015 all over again.

This reminds me of something Saban said years ago describing his talking to his QB at the time. Told him he simply needs to run the system they are trying to run, and to STOP trying to make all the plays himself. Cuz when he starts trying to make all the plays, then all the other guys aren't making any plays.

That seemed to be part of Baker's problem on Saturday he seemed to be trying to be the hero and do everything himself at times. There was that option play they ran I think towards the end of the 2nd when it was OBVIOUS Baker should have pitched it, but he kept it and just got stuffed. The next possession for Houston, they ran an option and Ward pitched it to perfection. He got the ball to another play maker and let them make a play!!!! Ward didn't try to glory hound it.

bama...didn't Heupel do the same thing? Seems like I recall him barely even trying to run the ball in several of our losses when he was here. Is it deja vu?

I dont' see how Bob can say the O-line played well when they gave up 5 sacks in the second half and we only ran the ball 14 times the entire game. Seems like Riley gave up on the run way too early and wanted Baker to win it with is arm.

Yes he did have games like that. Sometimes I guess the OC just gets tunnel vision.

It's like predicting a coin-flip. You get 4 tails in a row, and you think "no way the next one can be tails too! It's gotta be heads." Then it's tails.

OU-ULM 1st Down Stats

Pass/Attempts

1st Quarter - 5/14
2nd Quarter - 7/12
Total with Mayfield - 12/26

3rd Quarter - 1/7
4th Quarter - 1/10
Total with Kendall - 2/17

That's how it's done. No more of that 21/27 crap we threw at Houston.
