I watched Illinois play a day or so ago and there must have been ten or more guys dressed like coaches on the bench row and in the seats behind Underwood. Are they all pulling down a salary and is that normal these days?

I have to say watching these early Big Ten games the Big Ten teams have looked good when playing comparable programs. Could be a long season on the development front for NU with a shortage of wins.

What do you consider to be normal? If you look at our program, we have a lot of guys there as well

I have no idea what is normal. Hence the question. The last time I paid any attention, a team might have four coaches plus I assume behind the scene staff such as trainers, nutritionists, etc, many of whom might be shared with other teams.

We have a head coach, four assistant coaches and a director of basketball operations who sit on the midcourt end of the bench, and then some medical personnel who sit on the baseline end. And, of course, numerous student managers and the like. Did it seem that UofI had significantly more than that?

I have no idea what is normal. But I do find it strange how frantic some benches are. If you watch Butler or Loyola Chicago, it's insane. It's impossible the players don't tune them out when there's 10 guys shouting or doing things. They might see it as dedication, engagement, energy, to me it just comes across as chaos.

Probably a lot of prep stuff, but during the games I mostly see them handing out water bottles and towels to players as they come off the court. They also move the chairs out onto the court for the team huddle during TV time-outs.

In addition to this, they get everything ready for practice, and break down everything after practice. One usually will also film practice. They may have them cut game video down into specific clips (get me all of the defensive possessions from the DePaul game, for example). They likely all have stats that they keep track of during games (possesssion chart or maybe shot chart). They also pack everything for road trips, and maybe do laundry for practice gear and game uniforms.

Source: I was a student manager at Cleveland State back in the day.

Yes or at at least ten or so that dressed alike and sat in two rows together with Underwood. Part of why I asked was because I believe football coaching positions are now either greatly increased or unlimited. I wondered if coaching budgets were increasing along with revenue sharing, etc.

Yes. The NCAA expanded how many recruiting assistants you can have and reduced restrictions on what non-recruiting assistants can do. The result is greatly expanded staffs.

looking at Illinois webpage, you can see their staff. It’s quite large but lots of ambiguous titles.
