Any thoughts on this one? I see a much improved McDowell team who by the way now runs our offense and defense I watched them 7on7 at Avery to be honest I was a little sickened to see them run every play we run I still say Mitchell by 14

I think it will be closer than the Erwin game for sure. McDowell is more physical than they have been in a long time. If McDowell can play disciplined and limit turnovers it should be the closest McDowell v Mitchell game in a long time. McDowell can mix the pass in too and the QB has a decent arm. I'm sure Mitchell will be much better up front than RS so it will be fun to see the battle in the trenches.

How are y’all biggest school in wnc and hoping you can keep it close? Where’d all those athletes go? I remember the Titans. You should be a top 5 wnc team in football and basketball

Should’ve never hired a girls basketball coach from McDowell. We just hired him because he wanted to coach football too. Not saying he didn’t do a good job but his heart was never in Mitchell county

Here we go with this same old argument. McDowell is on the upswing that's all I care about right now. We have a lot of young talent on the JV level too. Coach Brewer is changing the culture and the kids are buying in. I see a 5 or 6 win team this year looking at the schedule. Mitchell's success didn't happen overnight, the coaches implemented a good system and the players bought into it. There were some lean years in the 2000s for yall under Snyder before Barnett got things going.

My point is how does a school that big lose to a school with 439 kids? Y’all get on here and act like you’re underdogs. If McDowell county out of over 1200 kids can’t field a competitive football team it’s their own fault. Coach Snyder’s teams were always competitive. They were the smallest school in a very tough conference. McDowell is the biggest school in wnc.

You can make the same argument for Erwin, Asheville, etc. It's all about priorities and culture. The kids and community generally couldn't care less about football at McDowell for the better part of the past 25 years and Brewer is working hard to change that mindset and has installed an offense that works better at McDowell. I have no clue why previous coaches were fixated on the spread.

Now back to THIS YEARS game, who should I watch out for on offense for Mitchell other than the QB?

I was honestly impressed with our o line. We don’t have the same skill guys as previous years but our kids play hard. You’re right about culture. I just remember in the 80-90s McDowell was loaded with athletes.

I think with time that the current staff will have McDowell back to a very competitive team. I fully expect Friday to be the best McDowell team Mitchell has seen in several years. I also expect that with in a few short years for the series to turn back to McDowell’s favor. But for this year I will say Mitchell by 10-14.

Watched a little film on McDowell today, I was impressed. Looks like Coach Brewer is finally doing what shouldve been done years ago. He has quit treating them like a flat country speedster team, and is coaching them to play hard nose football like a Mountain team. Their fullback looks like a hard runner, and the line looks much improved. If Mitchell is what I think they are this year, shouldn't make a difference, but it looks like the old McDowell is out, and a new era is upon us. The old "sleeping giant" of the hills could finally be waking up.

Exactly. If we play the same physical style of WHC teams like Mitchell and Hetitage and SMC teams like Robbinsville we can be very successful. We have good athletes, always have. Now some of them are starting to play football again but it all starts up front. McDowell had some awesome running backs when I was there but the line play was awful.

The biggest challenge for the titans will be defending the pass in their new conference. Erwin, Roberson, Asheville and others have historically had great passing attacks and McDowell has really struggled against it.

If I had to predict the rest of the season right now (which is foolish but still) I would say-

Mitchell- Likely L
Avery- Likely W
Chase- Toss up (leaning L)
Roberson- Toss up (Leaning W)
Erwin- Probable W
Reynolds- Likely L
Enka- Likely W
North Buncombe- Likely W
Asheville- Toss up (Leaning L)

I watched film on Erwin and to be honest was a little worried, Erwin will run all over McDowell Mitchell by 21

So Mitchell beats Erwin by 40 but Erwin will run all over McDowell even though you predict Mitchell by 21 over McDowell?

That's usually what happens we usually squeak by Erwin play you guys close then the Asheville teams pounce you, but I admit Brewer is a great defensive coach so who knows plus you guys have our playbook, but that also means we have yours lol who knows, I think this will be the best McDowell Mitchell matchup in a while, all joking aside Mitchell 28 McDowell 21 by the way Your Running back looked pretty stout on the frenzy

Man that sucks.......its gonna be hard to get in alot of games......especially if one positive case in going to shut the programs down for 2 weeks. This virus is not going away, at some point we are going to have to use some common sense....if you are sick stay at home, if not go to school/work.

Robbinsville had one positive and several close contacts. I heard we practice in a way to keep as many separate as possible. Only the positive had to miss Friday's game. He is clear now.
I believe this was due to the outbreak in R-S Centrals program, everybody was pretty much in contact with everybody. Hopefully Travise can get a game for friday. Maybe ya'll if Brevard cant play...

They already were missing players due to covid when we played and obviously others had it that were playing
They shouldn't have been allowed to play if they had pos cases in their program period, if you have a sick kid or 2 the whole team should have to test and quarantine for the 10-14 day period Joey did it right in Burnsville Avery did last season it's just the way it is I hope we dont take on some team that's still trying to play with kids that are out sick fri night just to get a game in Travis is smarter than that he will do his best to protect our kids first

No one can say for sure if the RS game was the reason. Kids could have picked it up at home, a store or really anywhere. It’s all over McDowell right now. I know that for certain.

You are correct. This will not be the last game canceled because of it. I would bet it hits each team at least once. I work in McDowell and I’m one of the few left standing this past two weeks.

I was really looking forward to this game. McDowell seems to be on the right track with some real football players and an offense suited for the their personnel. They are like most mountain teams. They are more suited for smash mouth vs spread it out and pass every play.
