Memphis looks like it could care less about being in Birmingham against a poor Auburn team. I suppose losing your HC and settling for Birmingham after being in the hunt most of the year for a NY6 game will have that effect.

I agree with Freddie Maggard that outside of the playoff games, the bowl games are nothing more than exhibition games. That's why there are so many empty seats from coast to coast and sea to shining sea.

If the playoffs are expanded, the attention to the 2nd tier bowls will only diminish.

College football is amazing if you are one of those big time teams to make it to the playoffs (or previously to compete for the BCS). It's an amazing system for that. It's great and fun that you can only lose 0-1 (at most 2) games if you want a chance at a title. However, after those top 4-5 teams the system sucks. It's nice to have another game and to go play someone new and to have the team get "rewarded," but the fact of the matter is that these games don't really mean anything. A little pride and pretty much a useless trophy. It becomes even less now that there are more bowls and they change sponsors every 2-3 years.

16 extra practices and a little extra hospitality for the bowl teams. That's about it.

Think I saw that something like 5 schools got their first ever bowl win this bowl season, tell those players these are exhibition or meaningless games.

Auburn is better than Memphis. The outcome was not a surprise to anyone who watches football. Nothing to do with "being bored" as one was a SEC team and the other is some mid major who didn't get to sneak up on the big name team this time around.

Too many Bowl games, cut it down from 40 to 34, keep the best and best attended. Move a few to more Central locations with domed stadiums ie. Indianapolis and St. Louis. Orlando and Miami do not need to host 4 different Bowl games.

With first UC, and now Memphis getting smoked, I may have to reconsider betting Houston v. FSU tomorrow which I had intended to do. Problem with taking even these really good non power 5 teams v. power 5 is that no matter what their record is, the power 5 team always has the much more highly regarded roster full of 3 and 4 and in FSU's case, 5 star recruits.

They need to expand to 16 teams which would utilize the 15 longest standing bowls on a rotational basis for the different rounds.
It would take five weeks to play (with a extra week between the semis and final). Which is about how much time goes by from the conference championships til the bowls are over.

Pray tell how Memphis "snuck up" on Ole Miss. They blew them the hell out. Just being an "Sec team" is irrelevant.

Maybe the games are meaningless but at least there's college Football on the tube. Beats the heck out of any other sporting events going on this time of year with the possible exception of a few nfl games. I sure wish my team was playing in a meaningless bowl game.

As for the OP, maybe Auburn is not as "poor" as you think. They beat a good Memphis team convincingly.

^^^ I think Memphis is a good team that can compete with SEC teams for the most part this year but this is an overlooked point.

Memphis lost their HC and QB Paxton Lynch has one foot out the door...probably more concerned with the NFL Combine, NFL Interviews, Pro Day and Individual Workout for the next QB of either the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers or the Rams...

SEC haters bashed the SEC West after a 2-5 bowl season last year, said it was overrated. Well so far this year 3-0. Personally I do not think bowl success or failure in of itself shows that a division or conference is overrated or underrated anyways, but that is just me.
