He was an outstanding player, and coached Duke during a very difficult time. The academic requirements were at their most stringent, and exceptions were very rare. Yet McGee's teams played competitively for the most part. Mike Dunn was a dual threat qb and played on some of McGee's most exciting teams. Prayers to Coach and his family..OFC

His son was one of my best friends. He became the AD at South Caolina when I was leaving Columbia. Very nice man

Would have been very difficult for any coach to succeed at Duke during that time with the academic requirement.

As I recollect his teams pulled a couple big upsets against highly ranked teams. Beat a top ten Stanford in Palo Alto and Florida in Jacksonville.

His teams strength was their defense. Had a great defensive back named Ernie Jackson who was an All-American.

Dukeman you're right on target! The wins at UF and Stanford were part of a 4-0 start in McGee's 1st year which landed them 14th in AP Poll. Unfortunately, an unbelievable spate of injuries derailed the season, and the Devils tumbled to finish 6-5. Some guys like the great Ernie Jackson you mentioned began playing both sides of ball. Jackson was conference MVP that year. Still it was a fun year while it lasted, and 6 wins gets a bowl bid of course now...OFC

Florida had dynamic passing duo of John Reeves and Carlos Alvarez. Duke beat them 12-6 and pretty much shut them down.

Any way to change the thread title so that the man's name is correctly spelled?

Got it. Thanks. I was aware of it. Just had not got around to correcting it. I'm sorry for the error. I like for people to spell my name correctly also. Saw him coach many games. OFC

No problem Sky. Very appropriate that an OFC started the thread on Mike, and I really liked your post.

Yes but I shouldn't have spelled his name wrong with the knowledge I have of the man. Jim should have called me out on it. OFC
