Mike Trout: Is he the best in the game?

He hit a walk-off Home Run in the bottom of the 9th in a 0-0 game with the Red Sox last night. He's had a pretty awesome week.

Maybe because it's more recent in my mind but I'm struggling to remember a guy who has performed this well so quickly. He's been a beast be past three years. Can anyone think of someone else who has been the best in the game so quickly?

Not right off the bat like this. I'm only 25, but even recent guys like Griffey, Bonds, A-Rod and Pujols took a handful of years to be at MVP levels, similar to what we're seeing with Bryce Harper right now.

Thing is, his first three seasons stand up pretty favorably alongside just about any three year stretch by anyone. Only guys with a higher three year WAR total higher than Trout's are Ruth, Bonds, Mantle, Hornsby, Mays and Williams. Mantle was 23 when his best stretch started. Trout is 23 now and already put up those numbers.

So unless I'm missing something, no one has come close to starting a career like this because even the greats haven't done this, whether it was as rookies or in their prime.

Going to be ridiculous to see how far this climbs. I think he has a good bit more left on his ceiling as he increases his power. When he starts hitting 40-45-50 homers in a season every year (like he's about to start this season), we're going to be looking at an all-timer.

In all seriousness, the amount of young talent in MLB right now is ridiculous. Trout, Harper, and Machado all look like future HOFers and they're all 23 and under.

Here's the bat from last night

I agree with you guys. The talent right now is very special and fun to watch. I hope Trout stays healthy and continues to climb. Angels should be in good shape building around him.

unfortunately, the Reds have little of that talent....and will soon be losing much of what they have.

Yep, I'd be more interested in them if they went ahead and traded votto, bruce, hamilton, cueto, chapman, phillips, etc....and got nothing but top prospects and high draft picks. At least there'd be hope for the future. Right now, if every player on the reds had a career season, I'd guess they'd still be 5 games or so behind St. Louis. I see little hope for this team as its made up now.

Now that the older guys are off the juice, the young guys are stepping up. I've never seen anyone like Trout. I guess his comp is Mantle, but I never saw him play.

If I remember ARod was putting up some crazy numbers at 21. He broke into majors at 19

Good point. It's a shame ARod went to the dark side on the steroids deal. Assuming he is clean now, it shows that he really didn't need the juice to be considered an all-time great. Kind of like Bonds in that respect.

ARod's numbers from 98-03 are simply unreal. Granted, he was all roided out but the numbers are ridiculous. He was also stealing mor bases than Trout now is. That said, barring injury, Trout's ceiling is unreal and Mantle may be the best comparison.

Also, the Reds biggest problem is and will be the Votto contract. He's bounced back this year, but that will be a terrible deal for them as it handicaps them financially big time. They need him to put up MVP numbers for the life of it.

Votto, will probably be a Red for a while longer, nobody will want to take on that contract. Phillips deal kinda makes it difficult to move him as well. Cueto and Chapman are all but gone. I hate to lose Leake, but think he's likely gone as well. Bruce is likely out the door as well, but not sure his real value. I also hat to give up Hamilton, but I just don't think he will ever be the hitter he needs to be to maximize his threat on the bases. Dude plays a mean centerfield though.

The deal that hurt them more than Votto at this point is Homer Bailey, he's only pitched a handful of games since he signed that deal and has been on the DL more than in the lineup, now they have to nurse him back from a Tommy John surgery all while paying him in excess of 100 mil. That deal should have gone to Cueto, but the timing wasn't right. That happened while Cueto was going through an injury bug of his own and Bailey was tossing no hitters.

I also think the Reds gave up too much to get Latos back when that deal went down. Yasmani Grandal (sp) was an All-star. Mesoroco can't squat now.

I do think Price needs to go too. He just hasn't been able to get meaningful production out of anyone.

Trout is the best all around player in Baseball today, he is on pace to be a generational type player. He is better than Harper because Trout is an incredible defensive player. Hopefully he has the work ethic to keep his body in shape because that was the downfall for Junior, once he went to the Reds he didn't' work out in the off season and became very injury prone.

He is exactly what I envision as a 5 tool guy. He is absolutely the best right now. I'm in awe of his speed with that size. He could be an NFL linebacker, or a RB.

Miguel Cabrera comes to mind as well. His rookie year was 2003 and he only played in 80 games. His next two years were good...

33/112/.294
33/116/.323

To ask if Trout is the best player now, is like asking if UK has the best basketball team in the SEC. Yes, of course.
My only concern for him, is look at his upper leg muscles. Guys with legs like that seem to have more hamstring problems than others. Hopefully that doesn't become an issue for him. If he can stay healthy, he should be on the fast-track to Cooperstown.
