Miller and Bud... Together?

So AB InBev is buying SABMiller, putting Budweiser and Miller under the same ownership. Just doesn't seem right to me... feels like like Coke buying Pepsi or Ford buying Chevy. More importantly, is anti-trust law still a thing?

Now all that AB Inbev needs to do is thrust billions into lobbying so they can essentially control the craft beer market.

Once I ever find out a beer has been bought up by a big beer company, I quit drinking it.

I can see them using this to squeeze out craft brewers even harder in restaurants and retailers.

I agree with Willy, if it's made by either I skip it. If something sounds interesting I look up reviews, not because I care what others think, but because I want to know who owns it. This has been since I tried an Occulto. I hope that never happens again.

Sorry man.

But honestly, why did you pick up an Occulto? Were you desperate?

Usually, you can tell the big brewers monopolies at a restaurant based on what's on tap.

For example, Bud will be right along with Shocktop, Kona, etc etc.

For those that are financially savvy. Is there money to be made here? Should you buy, should you sell, should you do nothing?

An indirect play might be to buy cigarette maker Altria. Altria owns 27% of SAB-Miller which is being acquired. This deal is a win for them.

Exactly!! Bass use to be mothers milk to me. Then inbev/molson coors bought it and owns rights or whatever and its brewed in the states instead of imported. Now if I feel like a Bass I drink a falls city.

Yep. It's also a matter of available shelf-space in grocery stores and supermarkets. Big Beer's primary goal is control, restrict, gain market share and lobby. From what I gather, this proposed conglomerate may encounter anti-trust issues not only here in the US, but elsewhere.

If the merger happens, the combined entity would control about 30% of world beer sales. That seems like a lot but I am sure that they will argue that they do not just compete with other beer companies but rather all alcoholic beverages.

Yeah, just like Blue Moon winning a court case saying that it is a small craft beer, yet they produce enough by their big brewer to be considered otherwise. Wanna know how Blue Moon won that case? Lobby dollars.

Same with A-B Imbev owned Goose Island. The lines are getting blurred in the craft market.

This is the equivalent of Nickelback and Creed joining forces.
Maybe your best post ever m8.
I'm a Natural Light drinker the last few years.

Just don't get into the cool beer scene.
I don't think it's so much that we think the beer is "cool" as much as we don't like drinking literal, figurative, and metaphorical **** labeled as beer.

It's not about cool beers. It's about taste. Kinda like VOB and you're favorite bourbon. If I'm eating out somewhere I'll have a good craft beer. May want to pick up six beers for the game so I'll grab some Oktoberfest. Now if I'm with friends for a weekend at the lake or ordering pizzas and watching the game then I'll drink coors. (Unless it's gatlinburg papa johns then I'll go with the finest beer around of course)!

Yeah I'm with you. Beer snobs are the worst.

I literally don't even like beer. I drink it about once every 2 months, and I usually cap out at 2. It makes me full, and in general I hate the taste. Don't like IPA or hoppy beers in the least, that seem to be real popular and trendy now, as I find them bitter and kinda nasty. I like scotch, bourbon, and a good cocktail. I'm that weirdo that is basically drinking liquor during beer pong, that's how much I dislike beer. But even with that said, nattie light, miller light, coors, bud, etc. are just absolutely freaking nasty - taste like the backwash of other nasty beers. Basically taste like stale garden water mixed with new jersey tap water and then a little bit of a disgusting craft beer poured in. How in the hell people that actually drink and like "beer" like that stuff is beyond me. Its like saying you're a true lover of mexican food and all you eat is gas station burritos. Even someone that doesn't like mexican would be able to tell you you are a simpleton.

There are so many craft beers I don't like and so many that are just redundant, but if AB and SABMiller products were the only thing out there, I would drink water. I'm far from a snob and cheap as they come, but I went to an event serving bud and bud light and was appalled at the taste. It was much worse than I remembered. If you like those, do a little experimenting with craft beers and you will find something fantastic.

"Craft beer" what a marketing piece. Craft beer couldn't sell in the 90s when it was call "Microbrewery".

I look at it like this. I enjoy different kinds of beers. I really like the 10% and above because those get me the drunkest without having to swill down 15 bud lights.

Miller and Bud both have their place for situations where it's good to drink them (usually all day drinking)...however, I prefer to drink an IPA.

People who like *only* Miller or Bud beers probably order chicken fingers from a fancy restaurant or have their steak "well done". You are missing out on the beauty of beer by limiting your choices to those two and your palate for great things (food/beer) probably sucks.

I like alcohol, so I like the higher ABV in these new crafties. Nothing beats a tall, cold domestic after a hot day in the sun, however.

+1.

Imperial IPAs. Imperial Stouts. Triple IPAs. Quadrupels and Tripels. The list goes on.

Goodness gracious, some folks have absolutely no idea what they're missing.

I disagree, nothing beats a Bell's Oberon after a hot day in the sun.

I know some people just stick to what they know and Bud and Miller are it, but I guarantee there are craft beers that you would like far more than those products. I agree an IPA or a porter are not for everyone, but if you like Budweiser try a nice Helles or a Heifeweizen. Try an imperial pilsner. Every craft beer is not an IPA. There are lots of tasty mellower options out there that you are missing out on by not trying new things. Miller Lite or Coors Light are the 1/4 pounder of beers, they have their place, but it's nice to have Five Guys too, and sometimes it's nice to go to Game and have an Elk burger.

Now for my rant. Bud Light is the nastiest beer on Earth. My dad drinks it so every now and then I drink one and am reminded of this fact. I swear it tastes like fake beer, I taste something synthetic in it. If Miller Lite is the 1/4 pounder of beer than Bud Light is the frozen burger warmed up in the microwave of beer.

I never said I ONLY drink Bud or Miller. I like lots of beers. I just disagree with those bashing domestic beers.

I took a bus trip to a UK- Vandy BB several years ago. They had "craft" beer and opened a new batch every few miles. They were the worst beers I had ever had! But I've also had some other places that i really liked. Euro Trash comes to mind.

I'm just not a snob about it.

That's my stance. I'll try anything under the sun, but your average domestics have their place. Hell, I worked hard in high school acquiring the taste.

20 years ago before the mega-corps annexed the US Congress a merger like this would never have been allowed. The very essence of a free market based economy is competition - the more these kinds of mergers and acquisitions continue the less of a true free enterprise system we enjoy. If this trend continues by the middle of the century it will the The United States of American Inc., a first cousin to socialism but controlled by the corporate plutocrats.
