See linked blog below. Tony B is one of the most respected UT insiders and media personalities, so I thought this was interesting. The layout is a bit cumbersome, but essentially, he says that Mitch would like to have his name in the conversation. This wish is then discounted because "Kentucky football is a mess." Interesting, considering Mitch's UT roots...

Wasn't Mitch an assistant AD at UT? The guy didn't even spell Mitch's last name correctly. Great "journalism"

Yes, lets get rid of the AD who has put an emphasis on football the last few years like he has and the one's before him should've too.

He is also the AD who let us use a corner of the stadium as our recruiting room for several years. That's how I can understand people wanting him out.

2 things.

1. Mitch would like to be in the conversation, doesn't mean he will be. I would like to be in the next conversation on Minka Kelly's next boyfriend but I got a feeling she'll overlook me.

2. I get Mitch isn't well liked for years of neglect for football and his jump the gun stance to extend Stoops but the guy is doing it right now and I don't think UK will find anyone more focused on football like Mitch is now. His hiring practice still worries me but I can't think of another AD out there that come here that could do a whole lot better. At least one that UK could wrangle away from.

As I mentioned in a thread about our ad this summer, he hasn't been in the mix for any other jobs in his 14 years here. Certainly not on anyone's wish list for any openings, although he tried to manufacture that Kansas was interested a few years ago (they weren't and were happy with their hire).

For the thousandth time Mitch had nothing to do with neglect in the football program. This is the the most misinformed criticism ever perpetrated on UK athletics.

The truth is donors made the southern schools football programs a tradition and successful to the point of the SEC becoming the greatest college football conference in the country. UK fell far behind going back to the early 60s when Charlie Bradshaw was hired in 1962 instead of a young Jerry Claiborne.

Athletic director ineptness and the administrations neglect due to donor non support (except for the Nutter Center) brought us to where Mark Stoops is today.

This is not Mitch Barnhart's fault, If a number of you feel otherwise, you are misinformed or have developed opinions that are generally baseless.

I had season tickets for many years and dropped them in the great fan revolt of 2012. If UK brought in a real football AD, I would consider picking them up again. And before you start bashing me, ask yourself.... if fans had continued to show up, would Joker still be here? I think you know the answer to that.

Well, if not appreciating an AD who's fine with losing as long as his "good friends" are employed, and who takes every opportunity to insult his paying customers makes me a narcissist, then I'll wear it with pride.

Yes, I think some fans are misinformed, and I think you belong to that group.

Much too long a list of malfeasance for me to go into right now, and a lot of fans are going to hate you for getting me to write a book again, probably not right now though.

Simple question, if mitch couldn't do anything why are we paying him all these bucks when the most incompetent AD around should have recognized well over a decade ago that football IS the money cow. Isn't he the one being paid to advise UK on how to invest their athletics money? Speaking of donars, did you read any of the LONG threads on here where numerous football fans that WANTED to donate to a designated football project swore they would never donate a dime as long as it went to mitch's KFund to spend? Didn't you notice the "recruiting room" which was in use for over a decade, a disgrace, and he didn't spend ONE DIME to improve it, but he did spend $156,000 to hang some pictures on a wall somewhere, couldn't you have put a ceiling in that corner of the WAREHOUSE, carpet on the floor, bought some chairs and got rid of the FOLDING projector screen with that money------if you didn't want to show the "microwave fans" who was in charge. Incredible things went on, recruiting budgets more for four or five basketball players than for TWENTY FIVE football recruits, about the same operating budget for EIGHTY FIVE football players (plus MUCH more coaches, medical, and support equipment) than for 13 basketball players.

As stated, even more incredible things were going on, when you consider the FACT that the football program, at the bottom of the barrel, was bringing in THREE times what the best bb program in the nation was-------which had the BEST of everything, coaches, tradition, attendance, Midnight Madness (which cost about the same as the football recruiting budget), AND fans-------the same fans that would have been supporting football if they had been given anything to support.

What AD truly concerned with his athletic department would work a deal that obligated his department to repay not just the $120,000,000 for CW improvements but an extra $100,000,000 for academia------the same academia that refused to loan the few million WITH INTEREST to install the TWO YEARS overdue video and sound systems-------that mitch couldn't put money aside for in 12 years but was able to immediately replace the loan in a day or so. The same holier than thou group that kicked Tubman out of school when he would still be on the team at UL or any other SEC school we play------mainly because they thought they "might" be sued if he was completely nuts after seeing what it cost him and did it again------what ever happened to doing the right thing? Reminds me of Thug U's buying their way out of all the dirty laundry they should have had coming out in the open. Their AD resigned, after saying athletes are treated like everyone else on campus, LOL, tell Dooley and his eight thugs that.

What about CBC and his contract written on toilet paper, which cost UK another million or two in his buyout.

I will give him credit for ONE thing, incredibly lucky to get Cal (two years late) AND Stoops, IMO, even if Stoops gets fired he will leave talent we could only dream of before, a real coach won't laugh at an offer from UK now. But this is all because of the unbelievable influx of money, primarily from FOOTBALL (other SEC teams that did invest), the $30M from the auxiliary rights or whatever, the earlier TV contract, a $5,000,000 bonus MAINLY for football (TV and Bowls) which evolved into the SEC network, (none of the $5M that I know of went to football) with megamillions from the new deal (again from OTHER SEC teams football), what to do with all that money? Why, borrow the money for CW and give away a hundred mill or so of that------NOT that I am against that deal, I would hate to be like a city college.

Now that UK has FINALLY invested SOME of their money into football, shazam, the fans (that wouldn't donate a cent before) suddenly donated $45,000,000 for the football center-------like the one basketball has had for a decade. See how that works?

BUT the FACT remains mitch cost UK MILLIONS by his penny wise pound foolish football policies, AND he still is, read Ugoff's post after yours, a lot of that 15% lag in ticket sales (when we have arguably the best talent to watch EVER in history) is made up of long time devoted fans like him that still hold a grudge against mitch.

And the latest fiasco, two CITY SCHOOLS within a hundred miles legally paying their players almost twice as much as we do, why even Thug U can match them even though they are in the SEC. LOL. A measly million dollars is going to cost us dearly in our ability to compete in the SEC before it is over with, you would think Stoops would realize if he invested a million a year to buy EVERY athlete equal pay as the city schools he would probably make a lot of money in the long run, even if he had to go to Southern Cal, Notre Dame, or some football factory. Geez, I think that million would be ALMOST as good an investment as Thug U's couple million not to have all their dirty laundry aired in public by settling (buying out) their lawsuit.

By the way, the HUGE increase in football money has happened in the last ten years, while mitch was fiddling.

No, that isn't all, but I am tired of it, aren't you?

PS, how is that for being shallow, how about arguing with some of the FACTS in my post.

I'll agree he didn't start the neglect but he did continue and contribute to it. I thank the good lord every day for the SEC network. Without that deal and the even bigger potentional payout for having even na above avg football program, UK would still not have the facilities it has today. That deal changed the face of college football in the South for historic doormats to suddenly care about football.

Like I said, for the present, you aren't likely going to find an AD who is going to do more for the football program. 5-10 years ago you may have brought in another who would of fought for the program and encouraged the University to spend but I don't think UK admin ever wanted to put the effort forward because the money for being a middle of the pack and a bottom feeder wasn't that much different. You had to be a big dog to eat at the table. Now with the SEC network, even the middle dogs have a seat and eat well.

Basilio is full of hot gas, he leads off the article talking about Rick Barnes, that alone should tell everyone something. If he couldn't get it done in Texas with all their resourses, it ain't happening in Knoxville.
Foremost, UT is and will ALWAYS be a Football school. Mitch has passed the Vols in every other sport except Football and womens' hoops, and hoops is right there now that Pat Summit is gone on, I simply do not see why he would want to be in that Hornets nest, where every off season is filled with one scandal or another.
This article is a sham, and the writer is looking like a Paul Finebaum wanna be.

Let's put aside for a second that back in 2007 Barnhart made the worst hire in UK Basketball history (and perhaps one of the worst hires ever in all of college basketball history).

Let's just focus on the topic at hand…the football program.

September 2002:
Barnhart extended the contract of football coach Guy Morriss, including changing the buyout clause if Morriss were to leave Kentucky. Morriss left in December 2002 for Baylor.

December 2002: Barnhart hired Rich Brooks as head football coach. Barnhart's own contract was not yet signed. He was criticized for running a secretive and disorganized search, then selecting for a program on NCAA probation a coach with two violations on his résumé. Barnhart stuck with Brooks through three losing seasons, and his faith was rewarded when the coach delivered four consecutive bowl-game appearances for Kentucky.

January 2010: Kentucky named Joker Phillips as its head football coach after Brooks retired. Phillips, who had been Brooks' "coach in waiting," became the 12th African-American head football coach among the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

2013: Hired Mark Stoops.

Kentucky Wildcats (Southeastern Conference) (2013–present)
2013 Kentucky 2–10 0–8 7th (Eastern)
2014 Kentucky 5–7 2–6 6th (Eastern)
2015 Kentucky 5–7 2–6 T–4th (Eastern)
2016 Kentucky 0–0 0–0 (Eastern)
Kentucky: 12–24 4–20
Total: 12–24

So for those keeping score at home…the highlight of the football program under Barnhart's watch is the Brooks era. Highest year-end rank was tied for 3rd in the SEC East. But...Four bowls with 3 bowl wins in a row. Outstanding for UK football. But that was in 3 Music City Bowls and 1 Liberty Bowl.

Again, that's outstanding by UK football standards…but WTF are we talking about here? We are all talking about trying to take this program to the next level. Trying to make it to an SEC Championship game…going to major bowls…maybe even making it to the Big Four at the end of the year some day.

Nothing Barnhart has done hiring wise has led us in that direction…nothing. Now as for the facilities...Major props for the new football facilities. Been a long time coming but you have to give props where they are deserved. So props to Barnhart for his part in making that happen. Because it is a big part of upping UK's recruiting game. But his hiring practices have been less than stellar in football. Unless you are cool with the 2 Music City Bowl wins and 1 Liberty Bowl win being the pinnacle of your program.

Was it not Mitch that passed on guys like Mike Leach and Petrino (who now has a top-25 team and one of the most talked about teams in the nation).

Was it not Mitch who shrunk the size of the stadium while everyone else in the SEC expanded theirs and even Louisville of all people is expanding their stadium to now have the label of the biggest and best stadium in Kentucky.

When you compare what Mitch has done to a guy like Jurich (who doesn't have half the fanbase, half the history, half the resources, etc) it literally makes you sick if you honestly care about Kentucky.

How much longer are some people going to bury their head in the sand and settle for mediocrity.

I have never seen or heard of a fanbase that will go to such great lengths to try and convince themselves to accept mediocrity.

"Well we better not get rid of Stoops! Who else could we get that's better?"

"Well we can't blame Barnhart! Kentucky football was bad before he got here!"

Meanwhile Louisville and Western Kentucky are down the road passing up the state's flagship university because they have innovative thinkers with vision and a killer instinct that don't make excuses for why they can't do something.

This is the dumbest comment I've ever read on here. If fans showed up we'd still have Joker? Seriously? If Bear Bryant hadn't left we'd have Nick Saban now.

If UK fans would show up for Joker then they should be overflowing CWS now.

People need to remember. Mitch took over a football program that was on probation. I don't think some of the younger fans have any idea what UK was up against back then. Hell the SEC East was considered the dominant division. Mitch has given UK football it's best years since Bear Bryant was here.

MB football hires haven't worked out mostly but it's awfully difficult to attract top coaches when you've been a terrible program for eons . Money will not get you a top coach because someone better will match or exceed it . AD for UK football is one of the worst jobs in the country for a variety of reasons . Very little positive history , boosters care about basketball far more , toughest conference , tiny in state recruiting base , probations , lacking facilities . That's what Mitch inherited , very few AD's in the country got dealt that hand . I think UK is on the cusp of much better days , hopefully that happens and everybody can move past the bitterness .

Mitch mad a bad hire with Billy G but most people, at the time thought it was at least an average hire.
Yes Joker was a bad hire but again, most people thought he deserved a chance. Did he wait too long...yes...but he waited too long with Brooks and that turned out so well MOST UK fans did not want him to go.
So I can't blame him for giving Joker more time than he seemed to deserve.
That being said, Stoops has been the BEST recruiter in UK Football's modern history. Can he coach? We still don't know but it was a good risk and no matter that outcome the program is in much better shape with personal and facilities than the day Stoops arrived.

Therefore, lets see the positive things in the program and HOPE the best is right around the corner.

If UT were to be interested in Mitch that would tell you just how uninformed you people are. They wouldn't have interest in a turd when the UT job is a better one than the UK job. The guy has done more for this school than ANY AD before him has. Name a single AD that's done more for UK than Mitch I'll wait...

Actually I hope both turn out to be true, in which case he would be the luckiest man alive. But the fact remains he had UK on bare minimum life support until it caught up with him, we should have never reached the below ground level point he led us to with him as the AD. And while I love the progress we have made in the minor sports I still maintain that if he had invested more of the money football EARNED back into football he would have ended up with MORE money for the minor sports. He literally cost UK millions of dollars with his mismanagement (non support) of football and it continues today, although fans should recognize we have probably the best talent we have ever had in at least decades------and should be MUCH better next year..

But SEC football is hemmoraging money now, hard to spend it all, and he did manage to borrow the $120,000,000 for CW------by obligating the athletic department (football mainly, and mainly SEC football) for what, about a hundred million more?.

jauk always comes thru. Always.

Thank you.

Would you like to argue with the many FACTS in my post, including the ones about Thug U.

If so I can elaborate quite a bit, maybe you are in the group that believes any publicity is good publicity. Wise investment throwing the money at the coeds and avoiding all that dirty laundry, but wouldn't you think a public education institution could find better uses for the taxpayers money, and why shouldn't the athletic department have footed all the millions, aren't they the ones bringing the hoodlums in?

But you should be careful, you might lose your title as the shadiest program around to Transfer U, they probably got a bigger break than your money bought when the incompetent NCAA screwed the U investigation up so badly they didn't even want to look at hurtt any more, the poster guy for coaches cheating, but hey, it got him TWO NROTYs------although when his past came out ESPN quickly demoted him to not a mention and made Strong the great recruiter.

At least you did break up the "orange pride"----- oh wait a minute, the NCAA mandated that, although they forgot to issue any sanctions I believe------Wasn't it a shame when the #1 RB prospect in the nation asked the staff if he could spend the whole weekend with the 22 year old head of the tribe, and they let him!!! And he committed, I will bet she taught him a thing or two, probably like a redshirt senior to a true freshman experience wise. And then he had the audacity to drop out, said he didn't fit in with the players------since that was when the eight thugs were enjoying their rampage I would say he knew what he was doing, that sort of thuggery isn't for everyone. It kind of makes me sick to think about it, how about you?

Anything else you want to discuss, there are several more things that have just sort of died out..
