Money is the root of all evil...

Gotta give Cal credit for the way he prepared future pro's for life as a professional athlete. Not so much ball, but the things that come with being a wealthy pro athlete. These young men have women throwing themselves at them and money galore. NBA teams have people dedicated to helping players deal with the challenges of being young, rich and motivated to succeed without being derailed or going down the wrong path in life and ruining their careers..and lives.

I think UK needs that person(s) going forward. I think they should be involved daily, including the recruitment process. Tubby hired a sports psychologist at one time. Maybe we need one here as well with the new landscape of college sports.

We have a psychologist on staff but he spends most of his time consoling Pope after embarrassing losses.

Money isn't the root of all evil. It's the LOVE of money that's the culprit. Big difference.

Agree to a point.
Tubby was behind some on hiring a sports psychologist. I attend multiple camps at Arizona with their softball team and Mike Candrea their coach. He had a guy named Jeff Jenson .
Looks at how many pros who came into money like Anoine Walker and how money ruined him.
Money does not make one but defines them.

What UK needs is to read Bob Knights thoughts on what a bench is for and how it is to be used to this team.

Some players love money more than basketball, it seems.
Most of these players will never see an NBA roster. Today is their payday ... one to four years max for being paid to play. For me, I am quickly losing any interest in taking time out of my day to even watch. NIL, as it currently exists, will obliterate college sports as we know it. We're watching it all unfold right before our eyes. No one cares about protecting the game, going forward ... it's the players "love of money" that will contribute to its destruction because you can see it in our very own players, who clearly don't care.

Bobby Knight was great in his day but his style borders on illegal today. He wouldn't last at any modern university today and might face charges at some schools. Seriously! I agree with you in principle but that ship sailed a long time ago and it's getting worse, not better, in that regard. It hasn't worked in the pro's for a much longer time, too. Which gets to the point. These kids are pro's now and they've gotta be handled as such but without the same things in place that protect nba team from players refusing to perform..like fines, trades and free agency. Frankly, I wouldn't wanna coach college kids right now. But I do thank you for making the first serious reply to my thread.

Kids are different today and money has made it a different game. I do think we should look at more nba like models for dealing with this sort of issue going forward. Other schools are gonna face the same thing and some others probably already are, but of course UK is in the spotlight for it atm.

I am with you but where I see it is from a business owners point of view.
If I pay a contractor to do a job, I expect that job to be completed as per our contract. If not, I withhold payment until it our agreement is met.

These "pros" are then should be treated as such, paid workers who should be held accountable for their actions.
I am not saying if some player is having a bad season due to them not fitting into their new system, that is on the coach who hired this player, but lack of effort and such should not be acceptable under any situation.
Bod Knight would be in trouble today and that for me is one of the reasons we as a society has issues, no one to say the hard truth and demand perfection in their effort.
Another great coach would have issues today is Vince Lombardi.
But the use of the bench should still be used as a motivator.

When I coached AAU ball, after every game the team was asked three simple questions:
What did we do today that we need to stop doing?
Wha didn't we do today that we need to start doing?
What did we do today that we want to keep doing?

Kids took pride and accountability in their effort doing this exercise. It let them see the issues we had and openly call out those who need to step up.

I distinctly remember Tubby being clowned for hiring a sports psychologist.

From what I read, "he was late to the party", as several other teams were already doing it...fwiw
I was around back then. These boards had the same toxic vibe as it has now with everything being negative and made up lies and rumors being tossed around. Rondo slept with Sparks girlfriend, he was point shaving, and the FBI was on campus. Tubby hiring a sports psychologist was spun as Tubby couldn’t handle him team and had to bring in some crazy psychologist.

One day kids we’ll have a conversation of the time when Mark Stoops was evil the first time before he turned things around and knocked up a coed. Wherever the message board crowd is angry, they will make up any lie.

I'm old enough to remember all of Joe B. but too young to really remember Rupp leaving well. So I know what you're saying. I was just qoting something that came up with a quick search about Tubby hiring a psych.

Nevertheless, the whole point here is that these kids are not only raised much differently than you and me but they're dealing with a lot of money and the things that come with. If the NBA does it, why shouldn't we try the same and for the same reasons?
