Bobby Knight was great in his day but his style borders on illegal today. He wouldn't last at any modern university today and might face charges at some schools. Seriously! I agree with you in principle but that ship sailed a long time ago and it's getting worse, not better, in that regard. It hasn't worked in the pro's for a much longer time, too. Which gets to the point. These kids are pro's now and they've gotta be handled as such but without the same things in place that protect nba team from players refusing to perform..like fines, trades and free agency. Frankly, I wouldn't wanna coach college kids right now. But I do thank you for making the first serious reply to my thread.
Kids are different today and money has made it a different game. I do think we should look at more nba like models for dealing with this sort of issue going forward. Other schools are gonna face the same thing and some others probably already are, but of course UK is in the spotlight for it atm.
I am with you but where I see it is from a business owners point of view.
If I pay a contractor to do a job, I expect that job to be completed as per our contract. If not, I withhold payment until it our agreement is met.
These "pros" are then should be treated as such, paid workers who should be held accountable for their actions.
I am not saying if some player is having a bad season due to them not fitting into their new system, that is on the coach who hired this player, but lack of effort and such should not be acceptable under any situation.
Bod Knight would be in trouble today and that for me is one of the reasons we as a society has issues, no one to say the hard truth and demand perfection in their effort.
Another great coach would have issues today is Vince Lombardi.
But the use of the bench should still be used as a motivator.
When I coached AAU ball, after every game the team was asked three simple questions:
What did we do today that we need to stop doing?
Wha didn't we do today that we need to start doing?
What did we do today that we want to keep doing?
Kids took pride and accountability in their effort doing this exercise. It let them see the issues we had and openly call out those who need to step up.
