Last night, watching the Kentucky game was a different experience than other losses. Usually, when you lose a game, there are things I can point to for optimism. However, last night, the way we lost the game and the fashion in which we did, it felt like a family member died.

After the game, I exploded with frustration and said the Pope era is over. By all intents and purposes, it very well may be. Not because there isn’t time to fix it, but rather that he has shown nothing to indicate that he can. I sure do hope I am wrong and he wins National Coach of the Year, but I don’t see it happening and I’ll explain why:

1.) Even going back to last season, Pope teams have shown a tendency to build large deficits by halftime. It is a disturbing trend that has started to bite us in the rear and it just isn’t a good sign, even for the games we won.

2.) No I’m not a coach and so those of you who don’t think non-coaches should criticize coaches should maybe stop reading at this point. I have watched basketball obsessively for over thirty years. I used to record my own stats and shot charts during live games. While not a coach myself, I do have a fairly well-developed ability to break down games, whether that be scouting or film breakdown. What I saw in the Louisville game film breakdown had me terrified. To the mockery of the rest of big blue nation, I pointed out defensive issues that were clearly on coaching and not just the players. We spent over twelve minutes to start the game in drop coverage, which is where you have your big detached from ball screen action to keep action in front, even though Pat Kelsey’s guards were torching it on repeat. Later in the game, we moved to a switching defense but started overhelping. Make no mistake, Mark Pope, as good an offensive coach as he is, is an AWFUL DEFENSIVE COACH.

3.) Roster construction. Last year, we had a team that could score with anyone because there was the threat that every player could shoot. This year, we build around defense, bringing in guys who could fix that end of the floor. This is going to go back to point number two. I need some people with reasonable minds to see this point: IT DOESNT MATTER WHO WE BRING IN. We already brought in defensive guys this year —- the reason they look like they’ve never played defense in their life is because of the coach. Go read my Louisville film thread where I go play by play. I said it then —- JQ WILL NOT FIX THIS DEFENSE.

4.) We have a team that doesn’t play for one another and does not fight together. To me, that’s on the coach as well. Pope needs to burn down what isn’t working and build with the rest. If he has locker room issue guys (******* Brandon Garrison for ***** sake), they need to get promoted to student as far as I’m concerned. I don’t care if Pope is nice to the media, but to his team he needs to show he WILL NOT tolerate even the slightest insubordination. We play like a **** show and we act like one too.

5.) We have a fanbase that looks for the wrong answers to the right questions. We have a lot of people thinking if we had the Caleb Wilsons, the AJ Dybantsas, etc that things would have went much differently. College basketball is a more cruel sport than it has ever been and you’re gonna see more and more psycho savant national championship coaches (like Hurley and Golden) because talent is more spread out than ever before. You could have plugged in Darryn Peterson last night and you still would have lost to Izzo, who had no such horses, because he is simply a better coach right now than Mark Pope. We can’t put our eggs in the wrong basket imo.

6.) No, it isn’t time to fire Pope just yet, but the flames will grow. I know we have fans on here that are very loyal to Mark Pope and you see this site as a battlefield, one side with the loyalists and the other side with all the infidels. I hope you will please try to remember how justified the anger is from big blue nation. The fans are not to blame for this. Many of the same fans who are upset would give a left nut to see a championship banner hanging in Rupp. I’m one of those people — I want to see banners. I want it to work with Pope. Can it though? We don’t know, but it’s looking less likely than ever before.

Sorry this post is so depressing. I wish I had a hopeful word —— there’s still time I guess. That’s hopeful, or dreadful, depending on how you see it going.

I mentioned in another post that I love coach but my worry even last year was not his coaching mind which is good, but I worried he lacked the hard edge needed to demand certain behavior like effort and discipline which 90% of the time is the real problem not X and O's. Its amazing how the X and O's start working when the effort and energy turn up.

Coach is an nice guy that relies a ton on analytics and strategy but if you cant command discipline and effort and attitude you are at the mercy of these guys and its not going to end well. Last year we had lapses of this as well but he was fortunate to have brought in come real high character guys who bonded quickly with the program and that really did try to sacrafice for each other and the team and thats what helped theme overachieve through all the ups and downs.

But when guys arent buying in like that or bonding with each other or the program, you get what we are seeing and the coach cant walk around like Eore from Whinny the Pooh, he better channel his inner Ricky P. and start demanding their attention. I hope coach finds a way to do that because Im sure rooting for him.

I agree with what you’re saying for sure. If you dare though, go back and watch the Louisville game and watch our ball screen coverage. Had nothing to do with Coach Pope’s intensity. He was the one moving the chess pieces to the wrong place on the board. I haven’t watched last night’s game, don’t think I could stomach it, but I’ll bet if I did I’d see the same stuff

I see Pope gracefully stepping away after this year before we can fire him. Something isn't right. Can't lure any big time recruit or portal prospect (unless they need a place to rehab) despite allegedly having tons of NIL deals to throw at them. Falling behind in way too many nationally televised games. Overpaid players throwing hissy fits and rolling their eyes. He sounds completely defeated, like a coach that knows his players don't respect him. I hate to say it, but there's only one constant (we'll, two if you count our awful athletic director).

ATP I'm struggling to see how we win any of the marquee non-conference games. And when we roll into Fayetteville and get the brakes beat off of us by a mid Razorbacks team, that will be the point of no return.

I so wanted this to turn out different, but I'm now resigned to the fact that it just isn't going to.

I will never blame Mark. If he’s over his head I don’t blame him for wanting this. He loves it here. He’s welcomed back any time and I wouldn’t stop a jersey being hung for that guy. He went all out for this university in many ways. He’ll always be the captain of 96 and part of bringing UK into the modern era.

He took this to restore UK and give all of us what we wanted. He’s at no fault here. If this slides off, Mitch Barnhart needs to be barred from the facilities and sent packing to Morehead where he belongs.

Lol for real, that's what I saw the "fighting" was about. Who knows lol. But it's happened before. I remember something like that with Patrick Sparks and Rondo
Where did you hear that at? That would certainly explain many things, including Oweh looking like he’s lost the will to live

We will probably finish 9-4 non conference. 13-5 in conference and be a 3 or 4 seed in tournament. A lot of doom and gloomers around here. But that’s the MO of the Rafters.

Realistically though, what have you seen so far this year that people can rally around?

He wanted to retain Calipari and thought everything was fine when we were sitting 30% winning percentage against the top 25 over a large sample size.

He’s bought by coaches, not looking at the programs best pathway to maintain our records and positions in CBB.

Pope is 54 years old and has coached for decades with marginal success. He is what he is and we’re stuck with it.
Let’s not do the stuck with it stuff. This is a repetitive thing now. We aren’t stuck with anything. You cannot lose at a program like this and remain. Stoops can’t remain even under his contract if it’s bad enough. You sure can’t stay here if wheels are falling off. He’s going to be given a chance here but if not he will be removed. Mark would probably remove himself. So no there’s no stuck with anything. Boosters aren’t going to dish out millions of dollars if this is the return. Barnhart? Yea he would. But he’s not going to call these shots anymore.

I'm with you as well on this analysis. I have been steadfast with defending Pope and his system. Pope and his system got completely obliterated last night.

I root for the guy because he is one of ours and that 96 team was special. In my opinion it was also time for Cal to move on. With that being said, the folks who have been dogging Pope have apparently read the room temperature properly. Current stats, effort and wins/losses dont lie.

I will still root and support our team whole heartedly but if there is not a massive turn around within the next 30 days then in my opinion its probably over along with our ability to get decent recruits and portal guys for next year.

Its crazy that a few weeks ago Stoops was a dead man walking. The difference is his guys still believe in him and and are fighting for him. Hopefully our guys step up and fight for Pope . We will certainly know by the end of the year.

Last year we had basketball players but not big time athletes in Carr, robinson, butler, Williams, & Brea. Now we have some athletes but basketball iq seems to be lacking on execution and some basic defensive skills…….and now these guys can’t shoot other than chandler seems like. BG would not be D1 if he wasn’t 6’10, good kid im sure but zero basketball knowledge and has not improved at all.

Gotta understand this is just code do how mad people are. Dude, I’ll speak for me, I’m angry as hell. I don’t think most people have completely given up on the whole season, we are just angry. And the car is running on fumes with no sign of a gas station.

Bingo. Notice how we added more pure talent and look much worse? It’s almost like fit matters more than everyone’s favorite word “studs”. Maybe after this year, Pope goes nuclear and builds how he should and quit worrying about what the fans ask for, because it clearly isn’t working

To your first paragraph, where we didnt see much positive.. how many games can we say Cal had like that? We lost bigger games with Cal, we choked games away sure.. but we almost always had a plan, made runs, etc.

Without looking, id have to say this is a top5 loss, in that regards, over the last 15 years. We were outmatched the entire time, and looks totally disinterested. We were never really once in this game.

That’s the most upsetting part. Very little optimism to draw from in that game, other than pure fan optimism. The product was devoid of anything to build on

I had to turn the game off last night or break my 70" TV.
The defense is so weak but the offense was abysmal. I counted only a couple drives into the lane for pass outs to 3 point shooters. I thought that and the back door plays were supposed to be the keys to this offense.
Or guys looked dumbfounded at the MSU defense. Why?
Rebounding is technique and effort. We had none of either.
I think Pope is going to resurrect this team but he will have to play the best players most of the time. What he's doing now isn't working as obvious as that is.
He needs to drop the hammer if a kid bows up and sit him.

This is Kentucky. Pope knows. He will improve this situation imo but there will be some hurt feeling. So be it. Let's get back on track.

What studs do we allegedly have?

If he did what the fans wanted, we would have had Wilkerson, Caleb Wilson, Ian Jackson among others. I really don't recall the fans saying let's get our 4th option Lowe and run off Lewis. I honestly don't even think our fans knew who Jelavic or Kam Williams even were. And the general consensus was we should consider letting Garrison transfer or give him a very limited role.

I didn’t say we have any, nor do I think the mythical word means a damn thing. What I do know is Michigan State doesn’t have any and it looks to me like we got absolutely shellacked despite it. Then, you got fans saying it’s because we don’t have Mikel Brown lol. All the while Arkansas with Darius Acuff beat Winthrop by one. It’s actually funny if you think about it.

More hilarity. The LOD trashed the last four coaches. They have created a hostile environment for any coach due to this entitled petty nonsense. Already they are going for number five. The best part? They think it’s their god given right to dump all over the program from their 30 yr old lazy boys.

Let me ask 2 questions. Who plays the role or has a Chuck Hayes heart on this team? What gave you the impression that any one of those players gives a damn about you, Kentucky or a championship?

The goal here is next payday. It’s not next championship. No coach can fix that. Until our players fix that, you guys can enjoy trashing our Cats. I’m sure it’s very therapeutic.
