According to a thread on the Main football board, most people are saying the Strength Coach is the most important. I can understand why since this coach is in charge of getting the players in shape to play with strength and stamina to play tirelessly through out a rough SEC schedule.

I'd like to hear your guy's opinions.

I don't think anyone plays "tirelessly" through an SEC schedule. S&C is very important for a lot of reasons, up until recently they were the only coach that could interact with players during the summer, regular coaches now have limited amounts of time they can spent but S&C is still the primary coach during this period.

Of course guys need to be in great shape but depth and how players can be rotated during the game is paramount to keeping guys fresh and preventing injury.

Good Lord no! [roll]

Making players "bigger, stronger, faster" has no impact whatsoever if they are not coached well on the field. OTOH, some coaches do quite well with players who are often not bigger, stronger and faster than their opponents. IMO, that is the key to be a successful football coach at UK...you must be able to do more with less.

Let's put it another way...would you rather lose Gran or the strength coach?

Peace

I'd argue the most important assistant is either the OC or DC depending on the background of the head coach.
- When Spurrier was the head coach at UF/USC...it was always who the DC was that varied their success (Bob Stoops, Charlie Strong, etc..) and when they had a poorer DC...those teams won less.
- When a defensive minded coach is the head coach...he really needs a sound OC to take that side of the ball and control it.

So for UK...Eddie Gran is the most important assistant coach while Stoops is here. Stoops needs a coach that owns the offensive development and game management as a whole.

Agree with K Time and Wildcard above. The coordinators are the next most important. Then position coaches, then recruiting coordinator. After that strength coach. Strength and conditioning is obviously very important but the skill set that a good strength coach has is easier to find than a top notch offensive or defensive coordinator.

For the upcoming season, it's the OC. The defense is a big work in progress. Everyone raves about the secondary, but if our DL cannot get penetration, even a Pro Bowl secondary gets torched. Not expecting Elliot and company to set the tone.

Therefore by default Gran is the most important assistant coach this season. If we win 6+ it's because of him.
