Coupled with the death of Lemmy Kilmister, this is a sad day for metalheads.

The only good thing Motley Crue gave us was a Pamela Anderson sex tape. And even that is debatable.

Hate on Motley Crue all you want, they're not for everyone. "Too Fast for Love", "Shout at the Devil" and "Theater of Pain" were fantastic heavy metal albums - especially by 1980s standards. "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Dr. Feelgood" weren't quite as good as they discovered more widespread fame but they were still great albums.

They put on a great live show, pretty much exactly what a metal show should be. Tommy Lee did some of the coolest drum solos ever in the history of man.

They'll be back in a couple years. I think they're trying to break KISS's record for most farewell and reunion ours.

I read The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. A very interesting read. You get the prospective of how a rock star and junkie both think.

Saw them at the Yum and they put on a great show. Have never seen so many fireballs or just fire in general at a show. If I hadn't gone and had awaken to the news that the Yum Center had burned down, I wouldn't have been surprised in retrospect.

I saw them on the final tour this summer, love the band, seen them a bunch of times but the last few years their live performances were slipping. Entertaining shows but they ( specifically Vince Neil ) sound awful. Mick Mars basically looks like a dead guy playing guitar on stage. Their autobiography, The Dirt, is being made into a movie which has potential since the book was a good read.

Perfect timing for metal fans. As the Crue hangs it up, Guns N' Roses (Axl, Slash, Duff) reuniting in 2016.

I'm not a fan of metal, but I do appreciate the skill it takes to make a good metal record. However, if I told my metal friends that Motley Crue was a metal band, let alone a good metal band, they would probably laugh in my face and kick me in the balls.

^Kooky is spot on. The hair metal 80s was an awful time for music, imo. Vince Neil sing opera? He can barely screech bad rock 'n roll. He's beyond dreadful.

I didn't realize GnR was reuniting, it's about time they buried the hatchet, they're going to make a TON of money.

They were considered metal 30 years ago, just not your typical thrash or speed metal. I would put them in the hard rock category myself.

Good. Motley Crue suck crotch and have contributed nothing to music.

I can see why some would say this. But their music was fun to a lot people, particularly in the late 80s early 90s. I enjoyed their music but even at that time knew they were horribly overrated as a metal band. Tommy Lee, as just one example, has got to be the most over-celebrated drummer to ever hold a pair of sticks.

It just depends on which era you grew up in. That music didn't take itself too seriously, it was about having fun.

Agree 100%, I loved that era of music. The bands were interested in making music, girls, and partying, and not necessarily in that order. The 80's hair band era produced some of my all time favorite bands like Cinderella and Tesla, but also some truly awful bands like Mr. Big and Extreme.

Joy Division isn't for everyone. Motley Crue was actually for a lot of people.

Tommy had the advantage of having 5 appendages to strike the drums and cymbals

I will never agree that the Crue was a hair band. They were more similar to WASP than Warrant, and WASP wouldn't ever be considered a hair band. Hair bands wrote songs for 14 year old girls and radio stations - you won't find those on Shout or Too Fast.

Too Fast and Shout definitely not in the hair band style but that was also pre-hair band years, I think those are their best two albums. Theatre they started to transition a bit, Home Sweet Home was the original power ballad although much much better than most. Dr. Feelgood was a classic hair band album. Also, Warrant debut album was pretty awesome even with their two crappy ballads thrown in there.

Motely Crue definitely had their place. Whether you liked them or not, they were big.

Vince with an opera voice? No. Honestly of the 4, he is the worst and could most easily be replaced. A fat little troll these days is a far cry from the 80's.

Mick looking like a skeleton actually is good.

Tommy and Nikki still going strong.

I saw their show at Rupp this fall. It was good. Their use of pyrotechnics and stage were incredible.

This is correct.

I'm a thrash/speed guy, and the hair "metal" as defined in the 80s was hard rock. (Bon Jovi. Def Leppard. Poison, Motley Crue, Ratt, Dokken, etc)

For me GNR was always a straight hard rock band that never fit into the hair metal scene but they get lumped in.

I like Motley Crue from 81-89 just fine. Never got into their newer stuff. Tommy Lee is a great drummer. Mick Mars is an underrated guitar player. Nikki Sixx is a ****** bass player but a decent songwriter. And Vince is a fat bastard. It was time to hang it up.

They will retire until their comeback tour starts. KISS is the master at this.

KISS only had one farewell tour. They were planning on hanging it up and promoters kept telling em there was still a draw, still a large demand, and they didn't understand why they were quitting. Also, the contracts that were signed were set to end with Peter Criss' and Ace Frehley's. Once more dates were added to the tour and Criss' contract was ending and he refused to accept the contract presented to him, KISS continued without him.

All the other tours since then have been in support of an album or just a tour by themselves. Not "Farewell Tours". But yea... to say you're quitting and then continue to tour for 15 more years is pretty much ********. Say it, do it.
Exactly. KISS is my favorite band. I have seen them no less than 20 times all the way back to my first concert at KISS Alive II. I even seen them on that farewell tour, and several times since then.
