We talk about a lot of movies so maybe, just throw them all in here.

Catching up on a lot of old stuff and came across an old one "Into the Wild." It reminded me of how I enjoyed the movie but hated the main character.

Can you think of any films that fall into that category for you?

@DaBossIsBack what's new in the rotation? I finally got to see Jurassic World but won't go to the theater until Star Wars.

The Shining comes to mind. I love the movie. One of Kubrick's best. The long takes and tracking shots are incredible. The mise en scene is perfection. I hated every character in it though haha I love Jack's performance but I hated his character. And not because he is an unsympathetic character. I just didn't like him. I guess I could say the same about A Clock Work Orange too.

New in the rotation: I watched Haneke's Funny Games for the first time. Hated it. The more Haneke I watch the less I like. I hate his long takes where the camera will just linger in the same spot for an excruciatingly long time. I watched Magnolia again for the first time in a long while. I love PTA. I wish he could write and direct every movie. His films get better with each viewing. Layer on top of layer. I always discover something new.

I'm going to watch Spotlight this weekend and possibly trumbo. Hopefully Spotlight lives up with to the hype. Also I added 3 criterions to my collection. Breathless - Godard, 8 1/2 - Felini, and Rules of the Game - Renoir.

It was a fun popcorn flick. Nothing I'd watch again but it was entertaining. Pratt was good but would have preferred someone else in Howard's role and a little more carnage.

Typical summer blockbuster stuff. Not as good as the original but better than the sequels.
Kind of what I figured. Popcorn movies are cool. Sometimes it's good to just be entertained and nothing else.

Ex Machina was terrific. Great use of sound to set the mood. I liked It Follows (despite some nitpicky plot holes), but what was that egg/phone/texting device? I know they were going for a timeless vibe, but I just found it odd.

It follows is an interesting film. It's a pastiche of 70s horror/slasher flicks and allegory for a number of different things. You can pick apart the plot holes but I think the director was trying to tell us more than just giving us plot points, inciting incidents and points of no return. The shell phone was a good catch. Here is a quote from the director about it.

"There are production design elements from the ’50s on up to modern day. A lot of it is from the ’70s and ’80s. That e-reader cell phone—or “shell phone”—you’re talking about is not a real device. It’s a ’60s shell compact that we turned into a cell phone e-reader. So I wanted modern things, but if you show a specific smartphone now, it dates it. It’s too real for the movie. It would bother me anyway. So we made one up. And all of that is really just to create the effect of a dream—to place it outside of time, and to make people wonder about where they are. Those are things that I think happen to us when we have a dream."

It's interesting that he wanted it is resemble a compact. As if to say our phones are just another tool for our vanity and self centeredness; selfies, social media, and whatnot.

Triple 9 has my highest interest, as of now. The kid in me really wants to see Pan. The "not to be left behind" side of me wants to see Star Wars.. but I'm more or less "meh" on SW. Let me rephrase that, I think those movies were 8/10 for me... but for SW fans, that might as well be blasting them..

Just saw Whiplash. Was an aspiring drummer for 5 years before my dumb-*** teenage self gave it up. Thought the movie was excellent. The drumming was incredible. JK's character was top notch. And the final scene was one of those "Oh snap!" moments.

And there isn't a single good horror movie I want to see on the horizon (at least where there's a trailer of it, not including 2017/18 movies), which bums me out. The Final Girls (pumped this movie in it's own thread a few months back) was kind of a letdown. Oh, do want to see Krampus. That looks like it could be pretty solid.

Whiplash was originally a short by the same director. Simmons also played the conductor in it. Whiplash was my 3rd favorite film last year behind Under the Skin and Nightcrawler.

Ahh The Revenant.. Forgot about that. For anyone who, like me, had no clue what that movie was about, aside from a Daniel Boone looking Leo DiCaprio.. Look up Hugh Glass. What an epic story. If the visuals of the movie don't pull you in, the story will.

I really liked Ex Machina. I love the score in that film.

I don't get the success of Jurassic World. I thought it was 'meh' at best. Jurassic Park is one of my favorites, but I haven't liked any of the sequels.

I thought Spielberg's new movie Bridge of Spies was pretty good and I loved The Martian.

I've been trying to go watch Spies for the past few weeks. I keep putting it off. I'll probably just rent it or watch it when they bring it back for Oscar season. The cinematography looks awesome and I've read that the opening is some of Spielberg's best work in a while. I'm surprised by the success of Jurrasic World. I knew it would have a strong opening but I didn't think people would go back to watch it again. The Martian is probably Scott's best work in a long time. He hasn't made a legit movie in a while. Damon did a good job as well.

How was it? I've been wanting to see it.
Alot of dialogue..then in the last 30 minutes or so, it really picks up, some of the cannibalistic moments are gruesome. Kind of a different experience as there's no movie score..I've never realized how different it is watching a movie with no music in the background

It makes a huge difference, but it can be kind of cool. I still prefer a score though. The cannibalistic moments were what I was most curious about. I'll have to check it out.

Funny Games--- I saw his remake. Which version did you watch?

So disturbing to see "regular" people doing such things, it stuck with me for a while. Kill List and The Strangers struck me that way, too.

I watched the original. I've heard some people say that the remake was better because of the acting. I felt like the original could have been so much better. Maybe that is why he made it again haha

Blue Ruin is good directorial debut. Very solid revenge thriller for a young film maker. Are you using Netflix? If so, Creep is a solid little indie horror. Don't expect scary though. It's a different take on the found footage genre. It's got some comedic elements and stars Mark Duplass, who does a great job and it's mostly improv. Think mumblecore; if you're familiar with that subgenre. What we do in the Shadows is hilarious. Pretty smart comedy from the guys that brought us flight of the Concords. My favorite comedy this year. Have you seen Holy Motors? Enter the Void? Frank? Short Term 12? The Double? Nightcrawler? Two Days, One Night? Those are all available on Netflix. All are good with some being very good depending on what you like.

Creep.. meant to check that out too from a past thread. Damn.

Netflix is such garbage though. As far as Horror movies go, I saw everything I wanted to see in a weekend.

Creep is a slow burner with a good payoff. Have to be patient with it. It wasn't scary by any means though. I don't know much about Netflix's horror selection. You can see a lot of good indie films though. If you watch the independent spirit awards or the Gotham awards, Netflix will have all of those movies at some point.

Yes, thumbs-way-up on both of those.

If you're in the mood for something thought-provoking, I recommend I Origins. If you like it, you might want to check out other movies that feature Brit Marling. So far, I've enjoyed everything I've seen with her starring in it--- and a couple where she only has small roles, as well.

Watched "Creep" with my wife yesterday. It was all right. Had some nice suspense, and it was nice and short. Not a movie I'll remember forever, but a nice little movie to just watch.

Unless some absolutely horrible reviews come out on it, In The Heart Of The Sea will get some of my money. That's the kind of stuff that just has to be seen on the big screen.

I watched Spotlight tonight. It was a good film. The acting was solid. It was cast well. The writing was good although a little heavy handed at times which caused it to teeter on melodrama. The directing was solid. The pacing was about what you would expect for a journalism film. Outside of All the President's Men this is probably the best journalism picture I've seen. It's the suspected frontrunner for best picture this year, but I don't see it winning unless some other films really disappoint. I still recommend it.

Saw The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 with some book reader friends this weekend. It was okay, heard it was pretty true to the book. The previews were more movies where something apocalyptic happened and older teens/young adults have to save the day. The genre is never ending.

Watched Brooklyn and Room this past week. Both are contenders for best picture and best actress. Room might get a best director nomination. Brooklyn was a solid period piece. i wasn't crazy about some of the choices the director made (lots of cuts), but it was still a beautiful film (production design, costume design, lighting). I will be surprised if it wins anything other than production design or best adapted screenplay. Room was very good. I don't have any complaints. The acting was superb, the directing and writing were top notch. It's a complete picture. It will compete for best picture and will probably win best actress for Brie Larson. The performance by the little boy was probably the best performance by a kid that I've seen since Anna Paquin in the Piano.

The shining is a masterpiece. I think the characters are just pawns. Alluded to in the overhead hedge maze scene.
