After Hours. Martin Scorsese's forgotten movie and I believe his first comedy. A dark comedy but one of my favorites.

District 9

An alien spacecraft hovers over Johannesburg. When humans make contact, they find sick and starving creatures who fled another planet. In response, humans put them into refugee camps, and what ensues is hilarious, horrifying, thought provoking and clever. It was a great watch.

Blood Simple. The first film by the Coen Brothers

True Romance. Written by Tarantino, directed by Tony Scott.

From Dusk Till Dawn. Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Salma Hayek snake dance might be the greatest 5 minutes ever put on film.

3:10 To Yuma. Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. A very compelling remake of an old western classic.

Moneyball and to a lesser extent (because it won awards), The Social Network. Both screenplays by Aaron Sorkin, and I found the writing and dialog in both to be extremely tight. Both movies flew by, scene by scene, especially TSN. Something about the way he writes for characters, love his stuff.

Ravenous - cannibal in the old west
Cromwell - Alex Guiness as Charles I is the best; Richard Harris is awesome too
Apocalypto
Arn - The Knight Templar - seriously most underrated movie/series I can think of
Barry Lyndon - the camera work is unbelievable, though subtle - dipshits may not appreciate it.
Bernie - how jack black didn't win an academy award is beyond me.
Duel - low dialogue, very intense
The Holdovers - if you want a real christmas movie, this is it
The Homesman - TL Jones is great...and so is hillary swank. stressful.
Insomnia with Al Pacino and Robin Williams - again, don't know how this doesn't get more love.
Lost City of Z
The Man Who Would Be King - if you don't like this, you are ghey
Man Hunter - the original. 80s. Hannibal Lectoer before Silence of the Lmabs
Mr. Turner
Road to Perdition
Under the Skin
The french version of The Vanishing
Zone of Interest was great i thought

Agree on 310 to Yuma someone above mentioned. Best remake of all time.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

I really liked Master and Commander. I’ve read that there was originally a plan to shot several sequels based on the series of novels. But the first was released within a couple months of Pirates Of The Caribbean, which crushed at the box office, leaving doubt about future Master and Commander movies being able to compete in the adventures-at-sea genre. A damn shame, if’n you ask me.

*Omitted any horror (with one notable exception) movies because I follow that genre closely and basically anything even half decent get talked about a lot so I have no frame of reference for horror outside of the horror bubble even though most of what I could like is likely really unpopular. The one notable exception barely even gets talked about in the horror bubble because it's a French language movie that went direct to Shudder with basically zero marketing.

The book is better. It has been claimed that the story was based on former heavyweight champion Primo Carnera.

2 of my favorites:

Breaker Morant
The Impossible
Breaker Morant is a classic legal and military movie based on a true story. I've read a bit about the real case and its not clear that the defendants were quite as innocent as the movie made them out to be.But it's still a great film

I also loved 1917, but it was nominated for best picture. So hard for me to say it wasn't talked about much

I’ve read stuff in Morant. Interesting man. They were not innocent in some things, especially the killing of the minister. But that whole trial was a sham by the British who felt the Aussies were beneath them.

My dad talked about primo, said the poor guy didnt know he wasnt really winning all those fights!
After boxing, he spent about 15 years as a "wrassler", much like the character in Requiem For A Heavyweight to which he is also compared.
