in order to prevent the hikackign of the NW1A thread, let’s use this one to discuss the area teams, collectively.

What are some games everyone would like to see between these conferences?

Personally I would love to see:

Mount Airy vs East Wilkes
Mount Airy vs Wilkes Central
North Surry vs Wilkes Central
East Surry vs North Wilkes
Ashe vs West Stokes

Wouldn’t know. Don’t even know how to get a schedule for those events. I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in 7 on 7s personally. Good oppurtunity for the QB and receivers to develop a chemistry and timing/route running but it starts up front. Didn’t North Iredell win the 7 on 7 tourney at North Surry this year? They will be lucky to win one game once the season starts.

In the MVC it’s Wilkes Central to lose. East Wilkes and Ashe County are good teams. Alleghany will finish in the cellar. 4-7 are 4 mediocre to average teams fighting it out.

Ill flip Ashe and Alleghany. Don't see Ashe having much success with as much as they throw it. Maybe I am wrong but doesn't seem like they have the personnel to go full air raid these days.

Elkin will turn a few heads. Quite a bit of athletic young talent that has been used to winning at the lower levels of youth football til now...Fresh new era at EW..the cupboard isn't empty however.

Elkin is a bit young this year and as such I'm waiting to see what happens. They won't have many Sr's on their roster this year....less than 10 I think. They might be a year off until they make some noise. I could see them finishing as high as 4th if they stay intact and healthy. Probably more like 5th or 6th though. I think they are better than Alleghany and possibly West Wilkes. Should be about the same strength as Starmount and North Wilkes.

Lake Man..i think you're sandbagging a little on the potential of the Buckin Elks. A lot of young talent but age may be just a number. I expect to see an improvement, despite the youth.

I believe it will be WC and EW battling for the conference this year. It will be interesting to see how EW plays on offense. Putting in a new O may slow things down for a few games. Hopefully the defense will be ready to go from game one.

Here's my thoughts from the 7 on 7's I've seen so far. They ain't pure Football but it shows what to expect in a lot of regards for teams who do it. It helps to get a look anyways:

-Ashe is gonna be better. Their QB is gonna be very solid in terms of his arm and his leadership and the sophomore class will help them a lot this year. Defense they looked a little more confident. #'s aren't great still but I see them maybe surprising in conference play once they get out of the murderer's row slate of non con games they have (I see them having a solid chance to beat Avery this year.) They have been working on their run game from what I heard so they could be improved. They will be hard to contend with in MVAC play. WC and East will have their hands full.

-Our 7 on 7 was quite fun; even if it was a bit crowded. We had to play every game on the bottom field due to rain so it was 8 teams on one field. But I liked the way it was done so I think they will do the timing format at least next year. Still prefer a less crowded field; easier to watch and scout.

-Across the board there was no team in my eyes that had a solid edge on another. RJ Reynolds won again but they weren't as impressive in terms of speed and play as they were last year. North Iredell got us due to a lucky interception of a bounced pass or else we woulda drove late and won it. They are much better though; last year they were tough to watch. Their QB can chunk it and got a solid WR core. I see them and Forbush having a thriller week 2.

-As for the other area schools: West Stokes is about the same as always, did a lot of screens and middle of the field passes. Defense is young for them. East Surry struggled from what I heard. I didn't see them but here and there but them and South had a thriller for 5th place that had a 0-0 tie. South got 5 yards from scoring but blew it according to the paper. A friend told me East was doing pistol plays, I can't say for certain.. I guess I'll see them at West Stokes in 2 weeks.

-Cont: South Stokes looks a lot better. Still not super athletic by any means but they have a new coaching staff who gets a lot out of them. They applied for new coaches on Max Preps so I was expecting them to look different; ran more eclectic plays this year than last year. #'s look way better. QB is young but they got a fast freshman kid who can be productive for them. They are wearing oddly white helmets.. don't fit their outfit much but I guess they are going for a Maryland style look. I see them doing fine in NW play. Gotta get better against deep routes to beat Prep. Forbush is very, very young and will be in an ID crisis this year but they played very hard after a rough start QB is a sophomore. They beat North Iredell in a thriller despite getting owned by South.

-Elkin is very athletic; they don't have 1 stud kid like the one from last year but they compete. Got one kid who likes to fight and catch. QB wise they tried 2 different kids, first one wasn't flashy 2nd one was the JV QB from '16. They will do a lot of boots and roll outs. Defensively they weren't as good as the offense. West beat them and in a suprise Forbush beat them I believe. Last I remember they were up 14-13. Elkin got out of dodge fast as they could after that onto the bus. I see them running it more this year until they find their QB; hard to replace a 3 year starter sometimes.

-Starmount we had last Thursday and they weren't that impressive but I admired their effort. They are definitely a run based team. They didn't complete a pass until play 10 on their first drive and thru about 4-6 picks against us; they ran shotgun pass plays. Defensively they give up a lot of yards but get to the ball quick. We had some good big plays against them as well as the JV's did. Our JV's scored on their varsity bench in 3 plays. I see them struggling against MA and WC but they will get things going by the start of conference play. I like how Grinton coaches them.

As for us we are competing and getting there. We are much younger than last year but I like the effort. The tourny we had the lights flipped after the NI game and we played like we are capable and destroyed South and Forbush in shutouts. West was a 1 point loss we coulda had if we had a pick or hadn't dropped an XP but it was a learning experience that they will keep in their heads to make them focus on consistency. When we played Starmount it felt like we were playing in the fall in spirit and that awesome. We will be as balanced as last year was on offense. D is younger but I like what they are doing when they are jamming.

I'll know for sure when we scrimmage North Wilkes on August 10th. RJR will be a good test to see us vs speed but NW's more like the average team around here. It was a way better test for us last year in the grand picture.

As for the conferences I'll do a more detailed prediction come early August but here's the early thoughts on my end:

MVAC:

WC and East will be the top 2. Ashe and Elkin are the wild cards with Starmount and West being hard to figure. West has a likelier chance to bomb than Starmount does. See North Wilkes being younger but competitive while Alleghany will have to fight to stay out of 8th.

NW:

Same ole boring story for 3 more years: East and MA show. South is my pick for #3 right now but their offense has to be more productive. Prep will be the wildcard; their QB is a stud but is there enough talent to help him out? They barely lost to South last year so they have the horses to win it.

Bishop will be competitive their HC is doing a good job; they gotta get a JV team at some point to make the program more healthy. North Stokes is gonna be interesting to watch as Sessoms might be able to work his magic. They could have up to 21 juniors this year; very solid # for any school but with a low senior class. See them winning one this year; they are due. Probably vs. Patrick County who was flat out lucky last year in Danbury but I see them playing Alleghany and North Moore as well. If the Vikings win more than 1 they will be over schedule and I see Sessoms getting COTY.

WPAC:

Really hard to say right now due to half of the conference being out of the pure area and in an open enrollment system. But i'll try..

I see us and West being the two early favorites. We will both be younger but have some solid seniors playing still. First time we have played in King in 3 years on varsity this year so it's gonna be weird.

The Forsyth schools are very hard to predict every year but this year is just impossible. Atkins loses it's best senior class ever while Carver is a ghost team that no one knows much about and Walkertown has a new HC but hard to say what will come of it. Atkins has had the best JV team the past 2 years but it's hard to say if they will stay in house or move to any of the big schools or that new academy starting in Winston. They don't have a QB with a good arm left over so I see them maybe running it more this year. Again a 3 year QB to replace here. Carver I see being much younger this year; they didn't have very many varsity aged kids left last year as it was but what were there were leftovers from Crowell's reign. This year's team will be the last JV kids Crowell had that he just pushed to the side his last year. They could either surprise everyone or be a cluster and impossible to predict. Could be another rough year perhaps. Walkertown's too iffy right now due to the late coaching change. Look to be a more mature team but hard to say what they will offer on the roster. Their new HC is the guy that was at North Stokes before Sessoms so interesting pick.

As for Central and Forbush I see them having more than likely rough years. Central loses it's best athlete so they gotta depend on that JV RB from the last couple of years to carry them as well as the Martin kid; gonna be one of Southern's toughest coaching challenges. As for Forbush they will be young with low depth but they could be a very scrappy team unless they get burned out early like what happened in 2012.

Great post slash.

Elkin is really intriguing. Depending on how dominate Morrison at WC becomes, Elkin could be the Conference favorite for the next 2 seasons starting in 2019.

I see them both having thrillers the next couple of years. WC played them the closest out of the conference on JV last year; that was without Morrison. With him included it could be some wars. I'm excited to see what Bynum's brother will do. He will be in either a freshman this year or next. Everyone I know from down there says he will be as good as his bro was.

They will be the 1A top dog the last two years of the alignment easily. East will have a dip but they will stay competitive, Starmount the same. Alleghany's too hard to figure. Hear their freshman class may be good but who knows.
