My easy solutions to the playoffs, also overtime games. Of course, they are likely too easy for the powers that be to comprehend

Playoffs: It`s simple. Expand to 16 teams, no byes. Have the committee rank each week, take the Top 16. The top 8 seeds get home games. Maybe play 4 on Friday, 4 on Saturday so if we have blowouts like 3 out of the 4 were you have an alternative to switch to. Easy fix and no conference champ will be left out but no artificially high ranked teams either.
Overtime - I`m tired of the stupid rules. Starting on the 25 has always been a joke. I don`t think the games should be decided by who has a better kicker or who convert a 2 point play - I think that is an idiotic way to decide the winner. It`s so easy - start on the 50 instead of the 25. Make teams actually have to have a drive. Sure it still may be decided by the kicker but at least you would have to work for it. I think there would be very few games that go to multiple overtimes - I always thought not prolonging the games was the goal and the current rules don`t do what is intended.

Agree about overtime. Starting in chip shot FG range seems dumb.

Forget ranking each week -that's done just because ESPN wants content for their programming and has shown it creates logic conflicts and boxes them in publicly with their ranking. Just issue the list of field participants at the end of the season.

OT - the goal isn't to determine a winner with the latest rule change, it's to shorten the game duration. They might as well just flip a coin after regulation since that would be even quicker. And speaking of shortening the game, if anyone believes they have been changing the rules for that reason, they aren't paying attention - the broadcast durations are just as long as before, there's just less playing time and more time for commercials... which is the only reason they televise them in the first place. Ask yourself this - does the new 2 Minute TO shorten the game or just create another commercial slot?

Less meat, more filler.

Cool. But NO committee. Not needed. Straight up rules/formula. Transparent. No chicken bones or mysterious devinations.
While I 100% agree with your NO committee and straight up rules / formula argument .....

What you're asking for is for alllllllllllllll the people who have money, power, and influence to relinquish those things in favor of a formula - and that's simply not going to happen.

I was with you until you said no conference champ would be left out. Pffttt!! Top 16, PERIOD. If you won your conference and were #17, sorry, you’re out. Odds are, with 16, all the conference champs will make it, but no automatics other than top-16 being ‘automatic’.

I think 16 is too many unless they do away with conference championships. That's 4 extra post-season games the teams that end up in the NC have to play.

Funny how FCS has a 24 team post-season tourney (and has had a tourney for almost 50 years) and we don't hear all the negatives about it like we do for the "big boy" level FB.

Is it just because FCS has more money and resources than FBS? :D

The biggest issue I see is with early rankings of teams to include preseason. The committee may say they don’t let other polls influence their rankings but that’s total nonsense. I believe, no rankings shouldn’t be released until after game 6 of the season.

I agree preseason rankings shouldn't mean much, but if you want TV revenues those rankings (starting after week 1) help drive interest and increase viewership of games, which is necessary for those TV deals to remain profitable.

12 teams is already too many. Go to 8. Total revamp of FBS football is needed. Have 8 conferences of 10 teams each with each team playing a 9 game conference schedule, no need for conference championship games. Prohibit teams from playing any OOC game against a team not in one of the other 7 FBS conferences, no more cupcakes games and an OOC loss wouldn't affect a team's chances of going to the playoff. Have a bye week for everyone after the final week of the regular season and then start a three round playoff of the 8 conference champions to determine the national champion.

Obviously there are going to be teams that are currently in FBS that get pushed out of the top tier and down to a lower level. Those teams don't need to be in the top tier now and won't be going forward i.e. Vandy. Also, some teams will have to move to different conferences i.e. South Carolina may have to go to the ACC to get the SEC down to 10 teams.

For overtime; play an additional 8 minute overtime period with a regular kickoff and each team gets one timeout. If the game is still tied after that, each team gets the ball on the 25 and has to score a td, no field goals allowed. Rotate possessions until one team wins.

I don't think FCS conferences have championship games. You would need to get the power conferences to forgo a rather large payday for not playing the championship games.
