I know we have all heard this, but these tales of woe always interest me anyway. My dad would talk about his mother throwing away his very nice baseball collection while he was gone at one point, and she similarly threw out a ton of vinyl records that belonged to my uncle in similar fashion.

I know everyone has one of these, but after my father's passing last year it really upset me to think about my mother throwing away his long-running collection of the paper versions of The Cats Pause and the various yearbooks that came out each year. This probably happened ten years ago, but he had collected them religiously for probably twenty years at that point (basically since the creation of the magazine). He also had cut out clippings about Art Still and some of the great UK teams over the years that also made it to the trash in this purge. I don't know why she did it, but I really wish we still had these.

As for myself, I was mostly insulated from such things because my father had gone through it with his mom. He made sure our action figures, cards and other things were not touched by mom, but at one point during a move one of the original Lego castles got 'lost.' I still have my suspect this got tossed by mom haphazardly, but I would definitely like to have that piece of toy history. Also had a bunch of Metallica and other heavy metal CDs thrown away on two separate occasions after building up my collection by my mom because it wasn't wholesome gospel. Not a lot of value in those, but it was pretty frustrating as a kid.

What's your story?

Various old (retro now) UK and other athletic apparel that I would really love to have in the rotation nowadays. Thanks, Mom!

No one to blame but myself. If I had held on to my baseball cards, comic books, STAR WARS TOYS from my youth I would be sitting on a gold mine. Gave them all away when I started caring more about girls than anything else.

when I left for the Air Force, back in '84 I didn't clean out my room/stuff

My Mom had to have run across at least 3 or 4 bongs, papers, clips, and whatever stash I had left.

As a kid, I had a huge collection of Legos. My mom saved most of our toys in her attic. Her intent was that someday, maybe her grandkids would play with them. Fastfoward several years. I look in my mom's attic (it's a real mess). I find some hot wheels, a few rusted Tonka trucks, a box of GI Joes with shaved heads, but no Legos.

She does have a box of Legos in her basement, but they are not the ones that I had as a kid. Either she threw them out or they were taken by my estranged brother.

Along the same lines, around new years, my wife decided to clean out/ reorganize some closets. There are 3 of us living in a 4 br house. The house also hase 3 other big storage closets. Anyways, wife decided that she should throw out my collection of Handyman magazines. They take up about 3-4 ft^3. I had to put my foot down on that. I get half of the master bedroom closet, wife & kid get everything else.

Don't recall my mom throwing anything away...my wife on the other hand

Should have known before we married. We got married on April 23. I'd had a pretty good year in the market the prior year and owed a tidy sum to the IRS. I had my taxes done, all my documentation, check written...just waiting for April 15th to mail it all in. This was before the days of e-filing. I had it all sitting in a kitchen drawer...all I needed to do was stick it in an envelope and mail it. Ended up working late on the 15th and got home at late-o'clock-at-night...went to the drawer to get my tax documents... gone!
After going through everything, packed boxes, etc I said something to my then fiance'. She said..."You mean all those papers you had in that drawer? I threw those out.".

Nearly 30 years later my first suspect whenever something is missing is my wife.

Mom never threw anything away but I damaged tons of great cards. I was reminded in a thread from a few weeks ago, I had 4 or 5 of that rookie Bird & Magic with Dr.J all on one card that was perforated. I separated all of them.

I told my mother that if she threw any of my stuff like that away, she would end up in a nursing home when the time was right. I said it jokingly and she knew it but she never threw any of my things away...As a result, I still have all my first series transformers and He Man action figures...I know the Transformers are worth some money but do not know about the He Man or GI Joe stuff.

In 1980 my mother threw away thousands (full large paper grocery bag) of baseball cards from the 60' and 70's that my uncle had given me because I didn't play with them . We had moved and she didn't tell me until it was a done deal , no telling what that clueless move cost .

She told me it would fall off if I didn't leave it alone but she didn't throw it away.

I am sure those toys in your attic would bring back some Sweet Emotions...

Kids seem to think their parents house is a storage unit. My house is full of my daughter's **** even though she married and moved out.

Her and her husband lived with us for 2 years. I had to get rid of a LOT of my stuff so we could make a downstairs apartment for them. When they moved out, they left most of their crap. I asked if I could take it to the dump. They didn't like that.

Only child, here, so every little thing I had is a precious memory. Nothing has been thrown away. I'll get the peak sure of throwing it all away myself soon when they get too old to stay in the house and I have to clear it all out.

Pretty sure I'd be living in a mansion on the beach if my dad had all the baseball cards he said his mom threw out. Or just a box of beat-to-hell Jim Moloney cards is probably more likely.

I blew through an ish load of quality baseball cards by putting them into the spokes on my bike to make it sound cool.

My mom used to get pissed at us for buying baseball cards. She'd say, "If you want gum, why are you wasting a nickel in baseball cards? Buy a pack of gum." Needless to say, she had little regard for our cards.

Later, I found my "The Goose Was Golden" SI had also bitten the dust.

How about something almost thrown away? I had two very nice saltwater fishing rods in my garage that were detached. One day I was throwing out the garbage and saw the two top halves of the rods in the trash can. I pulled them out and asked my wife what the hell they were doing in there. "Well, I saw we had four fishing poles, but the two I threw away were missing the reels so I didn't think they were any good any more". Good lord.

My Mom was a pack-rat... so my comics and GI Joes were safe from the trash bin. Nothing terribly valuable, since I read the comics a thousand times, and my legendary Joe battles took quite a toll on the figures... but I'm still glad I have them.

MY WIFE, on the other hand...

One time, I went into my office and saw a Kroger plastic bag (she uses them for picking up here and there) filled with some old mail and scraps of paper and stuff. Knowing my wife, I figured I'd better take a look through it... inside the bag were the ticket stubs to THE ONLY REDS GAME MY DAD EVER TOOK ME TO!!! I'd saved them for years, but somehow she or the kids must've been running around and knocked over the box that they were stored in, and she considered anything "on the floor" as disposable.

They were that close to being lost forever.

To all of the threw away baseball cards, one way to think about is, if the parents/grandparents hadn't threw the collections away, the cards would not be nearly worth as much as they are now.
That is why every card from the 80's and 90's are better served as insulation, fire starter, package material, etc.

The best story is one I had to live through. My mom was cleaning out my brother's "belongings" as he was off in the Navy. She pulls a penis-pump out of one of his boxes and starts shaking her head at me. Thank God, she just thought it was a Water Bong!

My mom got rid of my Masters of The Universe toy collection which even opened was worth a lot of money back about 12 years ago. I was definitely pissed about that.

Oh to the Star Wars toy guy, I still have those and they're not worth much at all anymore. I had an offer of a couple of grand for em like 12 or 13 years ago and turned it down. Wish I would have taken it now.

My mint condition Huffy bike that I loved. Years of great memories on that thing, was in perfect shape, was hoping to keep it for my kid or for memories one day. She gave it to a 12 year old cousin of mine that came to visit and lived in Detroit and that I hated when I was 16 and hanging out at a buddy's house. Never understood why the hell she did that and still haven't completely forgiven her for it.

My mom threw away the chance for me to have Masters tickets every year. Her mom was a long time patron. When grandma passed, I told my mom (executrix) she’d get a letter from Augusta in January asking if she (grandma) would be purchasing her usual 2 patron tickets. I told my mom to forward the letter to me. My first kid was named after my grandma and I was going to have Augusta change last name and mailing address due to a marriage. Yeah, slightly fraudulent and may not have worked but I never got the chance. Mom sends back the letter and says her mother had passed.

My dad stole my Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle rookie cards I’d worked my *** off to get. They were only moderately valuable at the time (early 80s). Checked their value a few years back. Wasn’t real happy.
