As most of you have noticed, I have a serious passion for the American Revolution. This coming weekend, I have a conference to attend on the subject in South Carolina. As part of the event, there is a day-long tour of battlefields on Friday, a conference and dinner on Saturday, and some tours on Sunday morning. And I'll miss a chunk of Thursday flying and driving to the event. So, for the next 4 days, my time on the board will be less than is the norm. I'll be checking in each day, but things that seem inappropriate may not get addressed as quickly as they should.

The BWI guys know of my plans, and will do their best to check the board periodically.

Hopefully, many PSU teams will win their contests in my absence, and there is much to celebrate. And if that's not the case, folks will use a little bit of moderation in expressing their frustration.

If you stop at Belle Isle, please pay my respects to the General.

This seems like the third or fourth time in the past couple months we’ve gotten this post from you. Is all our subscription money just going to pay for you to take vanity trips to the south? I want a refund!!!
Where in SC are you going?

LOL, I wish somebody other than myself was funding my trips.

While the tours are spread out, the conference is in Camden, SC.

Tom, I hate to be critical, but announcing in advance that you'll be away and not providing a very detailed definition of "moderation" is unbecoming of you.

Tom will be busy playing with his balls (cannonballs) on Friday. Checkout a website called Scorestream and type in Pa HS Football Playoffs and they have the scores running. If I am up to it I could DM you the score on Friday. Our local TV station app has a live scores link. I’ll be following the score for our local HS, Lackawanna Trail. I’ll be trying to keep pain free and stretching out my new knee I got yesterday.😁

Joking about the score. I got my own sources. (Two lights in the belfry means NHS won.)

Don't worry Tom, we will all behave ourselves and avoid confrontational topics. Instead, we will talk about non-confrontational topics like the weather.

Yeah, I haven't seen much from @ILLINOISLION in quite some time. I was thinking of him the other day, when I was going through the sports options on my TV, and saw that is Jayhawks were playing MBB. I do hope all is well with him.

Do you period piece dress up and run around with a musket?

what?

You're describing re-enactors. I know many people that do that, and a long time ago I thought it might be interesting. I think that re-enactors are helpful for giving people that attend events that they are at a flavor of what it was like for people at that time, and most specifically a visual idea of what took place. As a kid, I did enjoy re-enactments, for the visual aspects, and at times when I'd talk to a re-enactor and they'd give me a deeper dive into what happened there, or what they were "playing," and how the clothes, tools, and armaments they had would have been created, used, etc. I'm well past needing visual assistance to understand what took place at various battlefields, and am usually far more into reading first-person accounts, from various sources, of what took place, as well as larger history books that talk about the specific battle, the broader campaign, or about the regiments, lines, etc. (on either side) involved in the battle, or a bio of one of the leaders of one of the units (again, on either side).

ah yes, the Swamp Fox -- one of my favorites from the Southern Campaign. I'm not sure if we'll make it to Belle Isle Plantation Cemetery. That's a bit of a ride from Camden, SC, and the focus is more on battlefields than on burial spots. But if we do get there (I only have a rough sketch of where the tour is going), I'll certainly give the brigadier general the respect that he deserves.

One of these years I have to get to Washington's Crossing National Park on Christmas morning to watch the re-enactment. Know many who have gone and said its very good.

It is good, but it's held on Christmas, which makes it tough for many to attend.

While it's a bit different (i.e., not held on Christmas), the practice crossing has become a big event. Washington Crossing Stage Historic Park claims it's not a practice/dress rehearsal, but a fundraising event. And it does quite well in that regard. It's usually held two Sundays before Christmas, and runs from 10-3, with the crossing/rehearsal/whatever taking place at 1 pm. It costs (this year), $9 for adults and $5 for kids (kids under 5 are free). They have all kinds of events that take place before and after the crossing. The list for this year is:

  • Observe the 4th light dragoons portraying mounted militia soldiers riding on horseback
  • Smell and taste bread prepared by a period baker
  • See how soldiers drilled in preparation for battle
  • Hear the park’s fife and drum corps perform
  • Learn how cannons were loaded and fired
  • Watch blacksmiths demonstrate their craft
  • Browse the wares of colonial craftspeople
  • Immerse yourself in a follower’s encampment
  • Try your hand at colonial-era games
Not as convenient for you to attend since you moved from SE PA, but something you might be able to work into your schedule with some planning.

And just a note that it's not a national park. There is a Washington Crossing park on both sides of the river where the crossing took place, but both parks are state parks.

Great information thank you. I will be back up in Doylestown for Christmas. Mother and sister still live there. Kids are grown now and on their own so I may try to make it over on Christmas morning. I have always wanted to do it.

I heard it was out there, but I've yet to see it. That theme, packaged in different ways, has been mentioned, argued, etc. many times. I'll try to track down the article.

Jim, I'm sure you already know the game will be streamed tonight. The game of the night will be 11-0 Easton vs 11-0 Parkland for the D11 championship. I read this is the first time both teams will be undefeated heading into the game.

I'm certain, like many of us, you're looking forward to the new Ken Burns series on The American Revolution shown on PBS starting Sunday night. He is a class act, and prefers to "present" history as accurately as possible from the point-of-view of both those affected by it and those involved in it --- and let the viewer form his or her own opinions.
