In April, a team of scientists including Stephen Hawking announced a mind-boggling new project to explore interstellar space, using lasers to propel a nano-spacecraft the size of a postage stamp to our nearest star system, Alpha Centauri.

If they could get their little 'StarChip' spacecraft to travel at 20 percent the speed of light, it could arrive in just 20 years. But how would the electronics on such a tiny, vulnerable spacecraftsurvive for 20 years in the hostility of space?

Would be crazy to get that far in our lifetime.

I don't think the mission with yield much. It's going to be tough just getting the starships there, and once their there I doubt data will be returned. I also don't believe there's life in that particular cluster. Way bigger and older galaxy than the milky way, and we've never been contacted. Personally I don't believe in life as we know it on other planets. It's just too difficult for it to come together and as a christian, I personally believe it's only there if God created it.

can't they just mail it in?:D

seriously, I believe they recently identified what is believed to be an earth-like planet in Alpha-Centuri's system, which would make this type of mission even more intriguing.
