Nathan

[RUSCFORMERLYRULOU]

Is there any chance he can be serviceable on the court this year- for example if both Cliff and Agee get info foul trouble? We know his value in practice and as a bench cheerleader

[Scarlet Blind_rivals]

Option 3-4-5 at the 5 is Reiber, Hyatt, Mag before Nathan.

Cheerleader - but a good one

[Proud NJ Sports Fan]

No

[RU82]

Terrific walk on. But not a B1G caliber player.

But a walk on who has been in the program for a while. I hoped he could provide a few minutes here and there. I guess Rieber plays the Douc role if necessary.

Also Harper can play the 5 in spurts

Then why was he given a scholarship? For cheerleading?

[Greene Rice FIG]

Is this the 4th straight year of the exact same post at the exact same time of the year?

Then why was he given a scholarship? For cheerleading?

Yes and being a great teammate

[MADHAT1]

Nathan's value is as a player who helps prepare the team for the games to be played and also be a positive presence in the locker-room and cheer the team on during the games .
Players like him have value and benefit the team by being good in the role they are best suited for to help make the team a winner

[Gudenham]

Then why was he given a scholarship? For cheerleading?

because pikiell knew he wasn't using it this season so he figured why not

[ancienthooper]

Classic “Why?” thread.

[kcg88]

Classic “Why?” thread.

This board always wants to know if there's a chance a walk-on will play. I don't get it.

[RU_DIO]

People see some walkons contribute in football and think the same applies in basketball. Extremely rare to happen in hoops.

[ColonelRutgers]

Is this the 4th straight year of the exact same post at the exact same time of the year?

How long has the board been here? The names change but the post remains the same. And the answer is always “no”.

[cm_13]

Then why was he given a scholarship? For cheerleading?

It’s fairly common when there’s an unused scholarship to give it to a walk on to recognize their contributions. Pike did the same thing with Joey Downes a couple years ago.

[NewJerseyHawk]

Every program had a Luke Nathan type of player on their roster..... Brad Underwood at Illinois, has his son Tyler on the roster as a guard and he actually had to play in some spots in the last couple of seasons.

Nebraska has Tom Izzos son as a walk on player, this is the culture of sports to have someone as a grinder who helps with team concepts and culture.

[BellyFullOfWhiteDogCrap]

Don't we usually have to wait for our first loss before we look for saviors on the end of the bench?

[RutgersNo1]

He’s not even a D1 player…

[MADHAT1]

He’s not even a D1 player…

he's a D-1 practice player and just about every top school has one that helps team prepare for games, but only gets in when game is over

[PiscatawayMike]

Pikiell has a history of awarding a scholarship to a walk-on... Jake Dadika, Joey Downes, Nick Brooks. The tradition continues with Luke Nathan.

[mikeyoc]

Then why was he given a scholarship? For cheerleading?

Just something that happens at every level of basketball, from AAU on up. Check out
any HS box score and you'll see 7 or 8 names at the most -- unless the game is a complete
blowout. The guys at the end of the bench are practice players, simple as that

[S.W.A.I.N]

Then why was he given a scholarship? For cheerleading?

You have to practice against other live human beings, and he is tall.

The answer is the same as for the past 3 years. No.

Just like the back up qb
