I don't think history supports the idea that you should just let Nazis do whatever they want and they'll just go away. That didn't go well last century. Nazi = needs skull cracked even though they're white and voted for your bromance.
I'm often surprised by the level of political stupidity shown here but the Nazi excuse-fest is the lowest level ever.
The statues should become property of the state historical society and taken to the history museum. They would make a nice display of how some people tried to alter history by glamorizing a defeated enemy of the United States of America.
Just curious. And I'm not trying to provoke you or anyone else. What percentage of Americans would you say support Nazis who want to persecute or take away rights from Jews and blacks? One percent? (That would be 3.4 million Americans) One-tenth of one percent? (That would be 340,000 Americans.) I ask, because you say ignoring Nazis won't work, and you implicitly compare contemporary America with Nazi Germany where, from the fairly early days of National Socialism, a relatively high percentage of people supported the goals espoused by the Nazis.
My view is that the number of people who would support the views espoused by the marchers in Charlottesville is far fewer than a tenth of one percent. We probably saw the most robust assemblage of the lunatics possible to gather in one place Saturday, and it was a few hundred people. And in a country this size, you are going to have a fraction of a percent espouse all sorts of crazy views.
Many more would push back against taking down every Confederate statue, but that is mixing up two separate groups: One are the Nazis you reference. The other are people fed up with being dictated to by what they see as politically correct liberals and see taking down the statues as a symbol of attacking their heritage. But those people have no interest in racist causes or Anti-Semitic causes. I personally don't care if the statues are taken down, but I know people who do care -- and they are certainly NOT Nazis.
The left is trying to conflate the two groups as part of an anti-Trump campaign. I get that. But its like trying to call every supporter of Bernie Sanders, even those who like him basically because of his trade policies, a Communist.
