NC State Gets 1 Year Probation

NC State's men's basketball program was placed on one year of probation and former Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried was given a one-year show-cause order on Monday, as punishment for a former assistant coach helping facilitate money from Adidas to a prospect's family.

The Wolfpack weren't banned from playing in the postseason.

"We specifically discussed whether or not we were going to impose a postseason ban, and we basically determined that we didn't want to hurt or punish the student-athletes that are currently competing," said Dana Welch, an arbitrator who served on the IRP. "We did, however, want the institution to take this very seriously, there were very serious recruiting violations here."

Five other cases, involving Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, LSU and Memphis, are being adjudicated through the IARP.

I hope this is good news. I'm reluctant to get too excited because Louisville was on probation when the Bowen stuff occurred, and being on probation has to have some teeth otherwise why have it?

Can this just be over already? It's exhausting, and with the state of the world and everything going on, sports are supposed to be a reprieve from reality but Louisville sports have given little reprieve.

Yeah I want this to be over too. Even if it's two post season bans just tell us and get it over with. I don't have much faith in the NCAA but this ruling sounds more favorable to us than not. Still I expect at least one post season ban.

Didn’t this happen at NC State when Gottfried was there? That’s over 4 years ago. Part of what I read was they don’t want to punish players or coaches who weren’t there at the time. It’s not the same situation for us with the Mack level 2 allegations.

Ouch, yeah, I forgot about Mack's Level 2 allegations. You're right, recruiting videos and grad assistants helping with practice is probably going to get the program at least a 1 year ban, and that's being optimistic.
