NCAA releases midseason coaches’ rank and RPI for 2023 Division I Wrestling Championships

The NCAA recently announced the midseason coaches' rank and RPI for the DI Wrestling Championships. In the rankings, four of the 10 weight classes are led by former national champions.

To be considered for the rankings, a wrestler must 1) be designated as a starter at a weight class, 2) have 8 D1 wrestling matches this season, and 3) have at least 1 D1 match in the last 30 days.

The RPI can also be found at the above link. The RPI is not a ranking. It consists of 3 factors: 1) winning percentage, 2) opponent winning percentage, and 3) opponent's opponent winning percentage. Only D1 matches at the designated weight class count, and a wrestler MUST have 15 matches to be ranked (something that tripped up some of PSU's top wrestlers).

You would think coaches rankings would be pretty straight forward, but there is a lot of politicking that goes on. I think Cael has even said that in the past.

he did lose to Gomez, so I could see Gomez - 1 and Yianni - 2. I'm surprised that Sasso is ranked #2 and Yianni is #3.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. Kind of funny actually. I am not sure why it would be rogue to have Kerk #1.

Due to character limits, tweets are not always great at providing the details behind a statement. My take of what Plyes was trying to convey is that since Parris bested Kerk when the 2 wrestled in the PSU - Michigan dual, plus Parris was undefeated on the season, it was pretty much unsupportable to rank Kerk #1 -- unless a coach was choosing to go rogue and not bother to rank by what has taken place this season.

This can be corrected, it isn't the final poll, and it does matter somewhat. The coaches poll is 15% of the seeding for nationals.
