I have never heard a Clay Travis podcast before but just happened upon it tonight and he said something that if possible makes the NCAA look even more ridiculous and more like a bunch of ninnies than they already are.

They have suspended this 4th year linebacker at Tennessee, Arion Carter, for accepting a $400 plane ticket when he was contemplating going pro. Carter repaid the $400.

So let me get this straight...the dipsh## NCAA lets professionals go from an NFL team back to a college team without a peep from these clowns yet Carter who has been at Tennessee for 4 years is suspended for accepting a $400 plane ticket that he has since repaid.

None of what you say about the NCAA is false. They’re a joke. But some of what we are seeing now(particularly pros coming back to college) is a result of numerous court losses.

But Carter was initially declared ineligible pending an investigation, according to the UT document, because he accepted a material benefit from a sports agent during what the NCAA calls a “test the waters” phase in preparation for the NFL draft.

In December 2025, the NCAA provided guidance in a memo to college athletes considering the NFL draft, including a clarification about accepting benefits from agents.

“You, your family or your friends are not permitted to receive any benefits from an agent,” the NCAA memo said. “Examples of material benefits include money, transportation, dinner, clothes, cell phones, jewelry, etc. Please note that benefits may also include, but are not limited to, activities such as tryout arrangements with a professional team and coordinating tryout schedules.”

Tennessee argued to NCAA that Arion Carter 'acted in good faith'​

Tennessee argued that Carter’s unique situation demanded common-sense clemency from the NCAA.

“Current legislation permits student-athletes nationwide to have professional marketing representation, and through this representation, student-athletes have received benefits not unlike the nominal benefit (Carter) received,” UT argued in the NCAA report.

Technically they're right. He wouldn’t have repaid it if they weren't.

Also, the NCAA never allowed anyone to go from the pros (which meh) back to school. The courts did.

The NCAA is trash but you're unintentionally misrepresenting things here.

I’m not a lawyer but I imagine the issue is that you can’t place restrictions on football players that you don’t place on, say, mathematics graduate students.

The NFL also came out and said that any players who go back to college can't play for an NFL team during that same season. Therefore, unless court action is taken, which it probably will be, this phenomonen is being ended before it really can begin.

Ehhh--college is weird because it's not technically a play for pay league--once they start paying them to pay I think the courts will have less authority because there will be real, enforceable contracts

It’s just a summary of the efforts of Travis to mount a social media campaign to force UT to not hire Greg Schiano (after they reached an agreement to do so) including saying Schiano was part of the scandal/coverup at Penn State. Had Tennessee politicians saying the same and eventually UT caved.
