Well, looks like the ACC is not faring so well so far. UNC Wilmington is beating the snot out of Duke 11-0 in the 4th and UConn is dominating Georgia Tech 7-0 in the 6th. Technically, UNCW is the 2 seed and should beat Duke, but to be up 11-0 this early is pretty impressive.

Southern Miss is putting a hurting on South Alabama 14-0. The Southern Miss coach is being talked about as a possible Henderson replacement (at least on this site he is).

Georgia Tech and Duke both lost, Chris Burke pointed out that both those teams had losing conference records, while UK and Bama were .500 in the Sec.
Wright State lost a close one 7-6 to OSU, East Carolina drubbed Bryant, BC thumped Tulane, Virginia and FSU routed their opponents. UofL won, and UCSB beat Washington.

Comeback cats im a big UK baseball fan and started wondering over. You seem well versed and informed. What's your history with the team or just in general with baseball?

No real connection with UK baseball. I played baseball from about 3 years old until I was 18, but it was really more recreational play rather than competitive play. I just love the game of baseball and love Kentucky. Adding two obsessions together is probably not a good thing. haha

SEC didn't show up very well either. Ole Miss got beat by Utah and South Carolina was beaten by Rhode Island. That is two 4s beating two 1s. That's not good.

Maybe both the Sec and Acc were a tad over rated getting 17 bids between them. Duke was certainly undeserving of a bid.

Every year you see 4's beating 1's on the first day as the 4's are running out their one big time pitcher but those 1's usually come back to win the regional due to their depth of pitching. And for the 4's that winds up being their one moment of glory.

Very true but this is a year when the SEC and ACC are supposed to be far and away the best conferences. The ones may still win the regional but they are definitely now at a disadvantage.

Watching USC and Duke play, a 2-2 game in the 8th inning, and the Gamecock stadium is about 35 percent full !

Wow. Xavier has blown up against Vandy. Leads 7-1 top of the 7th.
5 runs in the in the inning and still no outs...X just hit GS. Vandy looks like UK today no bays and 4 errors...X loads the bases again and still 0 outs and they just another hit and run...now 8-1 and bars still loaded and 1 out

Well so much for my theory of 1's bouncing back from opening losses to 4's based on pitching.

Maybe the 2 strongest pitching staffs in the conference, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss, 0-2 and see ya next year.

Vanderbilt was likely not in the right mindset to be playing baseball this weekend.
Like I said they looked totally lost yesterday...think their pitchers walked in 4-5 runs in the 7th. Felt sorry for them...Folks I know we all hate them, but otis is going to be hard beat I think , but how can this possibly be done being the northern most school and all!!:baseball::flush::flush::scream:

Thank you, SCF. I'm so tired of the excuses I have heard since 20 resigned. For all of us that follow UK baseball closely knows the failures of UK weren't $$$ and facilities. 20 couldn't manage baseball. Period. Look at U of L today. Hairston and Taylor are from Lexington along with Henzman in the bullpen. Key players from our backyard. And the 1 thing that irked me about 20 was there was never a consistent philosophy. You never knew what UK was trying to do. If they bring in the right person, $$$ and facilities won't be an excuse anymore.

As much as I hate to admit or even say this. UofL looks like the team to beat right now. Now excuse me while I go set in the corner.

They are playing well, but they've been aided by an extremely easy draw. Big 10 team as their two seed. Candy gets knocked out. And the committee gave them the national two seed for some reason even though they did nothing to deserve it. Just hoping that Miami or Florida or someone keeps them from winning it all.

The majority of Louisville's roster hails from Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana. Kentucky can compete at a national level with the right coach.

They may not be an excuse, but if those two things aren't in place they won't get the right person

It's hard to say, hard to follow-through on, but baseball is the one sport at UofL that won't disappoint me greatly when they do well. The reason is solely McDonnell. He just seems like a good guy - totally unlike the evil triumvirate of Pitino, Petrino and Jurich. Don't get me wrong, I'll be cheering against them - but it's not like the case with football or basketball or even Louisville athletics generally....

I think the bigger problem for Kentucky as it applies to Louisville isn't just having three Lexingtonians in Hairston, Taylor and Hentzman pitching for Louisville...it's that guys like Blake Tiberi from Northern Kentucky, Drew Harrington and Zeke Pinkham are from areas that UofL very rarely had players (with the notable exception of Zack Pitts out of Etown). Formerly you were much more likely to see kids coming out of Northern Kentucky and Hardin County at Kentucky. Louisville has had some success in the past getting kids out of Owensboro--Justin Marks, Stewart Ijames, Logan Johnson and Cole Sturgeon---but prior to McDonnell anywhere else outside of Jefferson Co. was pretty uncommon.

Hack, that's a good point. I'm recalling that Jamie Fiepke and Duane Carr (I think) played at UofL back in the day. They're from our neck of the woods, you'd likely recall better than me. I didn't know until I looked at UofL's roster this weekend they have 3 kids from E-town on the team now.....UK baseball is much like UK football - a matter of failed use of resources (although the contrarians would argue we're just overmatched in a conference which has schools with much greater resources).....

...and Guy Wallace. Jamie was a year older than me but I believe two classes above me and Duane was the same age as me (but I think he was Class of '85 like you were). UofL went a good fifteen years before anyone I knew came out of Hardin County to UofL...Nathan Adcock signed with UofL in the early 2000's but signed a professional contract right out of high school.

Yep, forgot about Guy. You put your finger on a key problem the next uk coach will have to solve - but an outsider would say not much has changed at uk, this trend is all about uofl and where it was vs where it is as a baseball school.....
