Young staff and with a prominent young alum in Rees running the offense, they might just be doing the NU thing better than NU is/was.

As for the hire itself, I think Freeman is a very good, logical pick if you're comfortable with a first-time head coach, but from the sidelines I can't help but wonder how happy ND was to have its hand forced by timing and circumstance.

ND strikes me as the kind of program that wants to have a beauty pageant hiring process with lots of fanfare...but with conference championship games this weekend it's very possible for ND to find itself stumping for a Top 4 spot which they wouldn't get if Freeman would have accepted a position elsewhere before the weekend was over - hot name in coaching circles isn't going to sit around waiting to be canned in a month.

I think it works out perfectly for ND, all things considered.

Their AD mentioned that he had gotten a ‘foot out the door’ vibe from Kelly — a few slips here or there. Freeman was going to get a head coaching job somewhere this year (or a huge raise to follow Kelly).

It’s very reminiscent of the Ryan Day hire. Internal candidate who has built a great reputation within an institution with which he had no previous ties who they feel is ready when an unexpected opening happens.

I wonder if Swarbrick and the powers-that-be have taken a look in the mirror over this - your sitting coach is the winningest head coach of all time - a white guy whose last name is Kelly (which is just to say a natural fit into the "Fightin' Irish" lore) - and has made you to what was by any reasonable standard a consistent powerhouse program. It's a dream scenario. Certainly this could have everything to do with Kelly himself...but is it possible the demands from the administration, boosters, et al were too insane to tolerate? (and if so...uh, welcome to Baton Rouge, Brian...)

Just makes me question what constitutes a "destination job" in CFB - one where you could be fired before you even get to develop/start a QB who you actually recruited? Or before your third defensive coordinator who you hired after being forced to fire the last one and the one before that in 1.5 total seasons could install his defense?

For almost all major college coaches, a destination job is one where you get "f... you" money.
