Nebraska ON3 message board post on Matt Rhule

Sound familiar?

How disappointing...I had to turn it off. Year three and he hasn't proven anything (except that he can get a contract extension). Yes...7 wins (which will be the ceiling for this team). This schedule was as easy as it could be and Nebraska still has managed to look unprepared....uncoached....unready to play.

I don’t necessarily think Nebraska looked unprepared and poorly coached.

They do need a talent infusion. They were outclassed at almost every position, especially the line of scrimmage. The recruiting is on Rhule though, that’s for certain.

With a couple of edits, that could easily have been a cut-and-paste from this board. Fans be fannin'.

Nebby will never return to the Osbourne years - can’t get those kids out of South Central LA like he used to and where else are they going to come from?

After losing to a 1-6 conference team by four touchdowns you could hardly expect them to be at their cheerful best.
Sort of like when PSU lost to UCLA right after they fired their HC. Although I think that was mainly related to being unmotivated and unprepared, something that fell onto our HC at the time. I think Nebraska was motivated and prepared, but more for a downtrodden team, and not a more talented and motivated Penn State. They ran into the buzzsaw.

Agh, all that's needed is a little "medicine" - just ask "Doctor" Tom!

Remember that Nebraska is down to third string (I think) freshman QB. When Raiola was healthy, they looked a lot better. Still...I've watched some of their games, and their defense lapsed far too often, and the offense was pretty much Raiola, Johnson, and Barney - and their offense got blown up quite often. Now, of course, Penn State has had injury issues too, but PSU has far more talent on the O-line and defense.

Injury and personnel issues aside, it really comes down to coaching. Seems to me that Smith >>> Rhule last night. Rhule evidently didn't watch any of the MSU game or he would've seen that Penn State was starting to look much better.

Tom Osborne recruited some of his greatest players from New Jersey, Texas, and Florida in addition to California.

In the age of NIL it is feasible and very possible for any big time program to replicate Osborne’s recruiting strategy if the school has enough money and they have a high quality head coach. Oregon is a prime example.

Matt Rhule is not a high quality coach.

Matt Rhule is the Michael Jordan of getting hired.
Other than that it’s hard to differentiate him from just about any one of several hundred other coaches.
Rhule is fine to build a program that's on the floor to being mid

Rhule is a highly charismatic and likable guy. You want to work with him and believe he will succeed. That buys a few years.

He’s been good at moving on by that point, which raises inevitable questions about longevity and ability. Nobody can blame him for moving up when the opportunity arises.

But he’s never built and sustained a program at a high level. His Nebraska journey will be quite interesting to watch. He either succeeds or gets canned. I don’t see a better college job hiring him away at this point. Very Franklin-esque.

I strongly disagree with your first statement. Dont believe he's either of those things. Agree with the rest

Lateef is no Raiola but he is pretty darn good for a backup, especially as a freshman.

Osborne did it at a time when other schools weren’t paying their players to the level he was…want the money, you go to Nebraska. Now that you can get paid anywhere, there’s no reason to go to Nebraska.

Bingo.
Nebraska should aspire to be Iowa, which is similar demographically and location-wise today. They’re never being Ohio State again.

He also pulled a lot from NJ and that pipeline has seemingly dried up.

Sounds vaguely familiar.
I will also add John Butler and one of the most overrated OC's ever in Dana Holgerson.

We had this one cornhead behind us saying the team would be on a 4 am flight back to Lincoln to do suicides at 8. Whatever, I'm just glad they left somewhere around 23-3.

Second string QB, but Lateef is a freshman.

He also had no issues with taking players with questionable character. I’m being polite also.

Without championships and a playoff appearance. Easily Franklin lite.

Isn’t Allar out for the season and isn’t Grunk a redshirt freshman who hardly played last year?

PSU is playing a redshirt freshman second string QB making his first starts.

Being that they are friends and Rhule gave Terry his first job, Rhule should have known better than to expect a down team.

True, but you don't hear about kNU players throwing their girlfriends down stairwells anymore either.

I noticed that post (OP) on their board. But, the reality is that many of their fans on that same forum recognized that the biggest issue was the talent disparity between our programs. It's vital we hire someone who can keep us in the hunt for top-ten recruiting classes each season.

I think in the new era of football it’s a balance between recruiting and portal.
