Nebraska trying to keep up with Penn State hehe.

I remember being there and experiencing that sea of red. They are the nicest people you will meet. They are so generous in the lots before the game, offering food and drink to visitors. Then the game started...

Nebraska fans are the nicest in college football. If you don't believe me, just ask any of them.
Agreed. They are real front-runners, if you ask me. It is easy to stand and clap for the visiting team when they leave the field after the Huskers used to win games by 50 points. Those same fans don't tend to be so gracious when the visiting team comes in and beats the Huskers.

This. Beat our Huskers and you're the worst fans in CFB with the most classless dirtiest players and coaches in CFB. Sure, we make up chants about opposing players who died of cancer, but that's because he was a bad kid who got the coach's daughter pregnant. We don't have low character guys on our team; guys like Lawrence Phillips and the Incognito boys were fine young men, just misunderstood.

In fairness, the people in Nebraska are generally friendly, decent folks, and that applies to many, many Cornhusker fans. That said, a significant portion of the fanbase becomes much less friendly and gracious when they are on the wrong side of the final score. IMO, the Alabama fans were consistently the best home or away.

For the most part, the people in Nebraska are pretty friendly, decent people, and that applies to many, many Cornhusker fans. That said, a significant portion of the fanbase becomes much less friendly and gracious when they are on the wrong side of the final score. I agree about Alabama fans and we also had great experiences with Auburn fans too.

After a Nebraska game at Beaver Stadium a long time ago, a Huskers fan had his cowboy hat stolen from his head by a Penn State fan. "What's the big deal??", you ask. It's just a hat. Well apparently, the dude had worn the hat to Nebraska games for years and it was almost like family. He was taking the loss pretty hard. There were several news articles about it which could have made you think Penn State fans beat the guy to a pulp, burned his car, and made him walk back to Lincoln. After a couple weeks of media coverage, the hat thief felt guilty and passed it to the authorities. The Nebraska fan eventually got his hat back and all was right with the world.

How does this pertain to the OP?? I guess it doesn't.

“Fine young men who were misunderstood.” Well crafted multi-purpose snark.

It was one of those stupid a** oversized cowboy foam hats and I distinctly remember seeing the theft in process. It was after the 1982 last minute win.

We can criticize Nebraska fans all we want but they've sold out 400+ consecutive games in spite of being on a bad stretch over the past decade. I think Ruhle might have them heading in a good direction. Just our luck that we didn't get to play them during the down years.

No, it was several years later after a night name, maybe the 2002 game. The guy had red cowboy-like hat with an "N" on it, and some kid decided to be a jerk. He ran past the guy, took it off his head, and kept running. It was stupid, classless, and wrong. The story morphed into a harrowing account where the man was assaulted, left badly injured and emotionally shattered over the loss of the hat. It was also said to be typical of how Penn State fans treated the model citizen NU fans.

Fortunately, there were no message boards in '82 and they were limited to complaining in local newspapers and on radio call-in shows. They were probably too busy complaining about the officiating to say anything about the foam hat. FWIW, prior to getting married and becoming a dad, I would have listed the '82 game as one of the top five days of my life. I watched it, again, on Youtube and made a point of showing my wife and son where I was sitting.

I was in the north endzone. One of the first games I remember having portable lights for.

I was a sophomore. We went in early and got the best seats we could as underclassmen - about 2/3 of the way up right against the rail separating the sections. When Bowman caught the winning TD, someone sitting above us fell down while jumping and took about 30 of us with him; absolutely no one cared. We untangled, got up, and went back to celebrating. I think my voice came back the following Tuesday. The scene in downtown State College that night was just fantastic. I wish that kind of experience for every Penn Stater.

That 400+ game sellout streak is highly dubious. As expected, the Huskers used some creative accounting and other shenanigans to claim that the streak never was broken.

IIRC from the Nebby board they have local businesses buy all unsold tickets late each week to artificially keep the streak going. I think they end up donating them.

Maybe but the point remains that Nebraska fans have continued to come out in big numbers in spite of the team's struggles over the past decade. They even filled that stadium for women's volleyball.

Every team uses creative accounting. Industry practice is that announced attendance is number of tickets distributed, not actual people in attendance.

Actually, Nebraska Football struggles began the day Dr. Tom Osborne retired in 1997. Their last top 10 finish was in 2001 under Frank Solich. Sadly, the Nebraska Football program has been 2nd tier ever since. So, their struggles have been over a 23 year time span.

Exhibit A of changing coaches frequently while unsuccessfully trying to recapture the past. They fired some good coaches along the way.

Watch young, fit, athletic women in tight spandex shorts or watch the corn grow? Tough call.

Fired some good coaches? I assume you must be kidding. It was exactly the opposite. Nebraska made 5 consecutive disastrous hires.

Frank Solich:
He inherited a National Championship caliber roster loaded with NFL talent and after 4 decent years the decline began with humiliating losses (41-24 to Missouri, 38-9 to Kansas State).

Bill Callahan:
One of the worst coaches in Nebraska Football history. Finished 27-22 before being fired for incompetence.

Bo Pelini:
He averaged nearly 4 losses every year. The definition of mediocrity.

Mike Riley:
Historically a decent coach. However his 19-19 record was an embarrassment for Big Red.

Scott Frost:
He was completely overmatched, out-coached, and out-recruited while finishing his tenure with a disastrous 16-31 record.

Matt Rhule:
To be fair, the jury is still out on Rhule. Though his 12-13 record has not been a great start.
