The University of South Florida is having a nice start to the 2025 season, beating Boise State at home 34-7 and then going on the road to Gainesville beating the Gators 18-16.

They are coached by none other than Alex Golesh.

Alex graduated from, but never played for, Ohio State. He subsequently entered the coaching ranks and ended up becoming Tim Beckman’s recruiting coordinator at Illinois in 2012 when he orchestrated the invasion of eight Illini coaches into State College trying to poach PSU players.

Tim Beckman’s coaching career thankfully ended in 2014, but Golesh’s seems to be emerging.

Now, every coaching staff is in the business of poaching. Never forgive or forget that it was PSU's own Board of Trustees that conspired to destroy PSU football. Hiring Freeh, paying him millions for a report that contained no "smoking gun," but instead orchestrated a news conference that presented "findings" never proven in his investgation.
Freeh was hired soley to "justify" the boards actions and portray them as "saving" PSU football.
This invited the sanctions that led to the potential poaching.

A collection of truly dispicable humans.

Cowards who shrank at the threats of a corrupt Governor who was hell-bent on getting PSU due to his political dislike of our then President. A Governor who abused his powers as AG for political purposes shielding the Chairman of The Board of The Second Mile (who was a huge political supporter of the corrupt AG running for Governor - he was Head of the Centre County GOP and held a massive fundraiser for the corrupt AG's Gubernatorial Campaign at his own private home at the same time the AG AG Gubernatorial Candidate was supposedly investigating The Second Mile for Charitable Fraud and numerous other legal violations of it's Board Members!).

I completely disagree. It's so upsetting to read comments like this when you have absolutely, no idea, on what the university and it's football program was facing. The ignorance is hard for me to ignore.

And to top it off, they pretty much knew at the time, because Freeh told them he was finding nothing to implicate Joe or football in any way, that they had screwed up by being rash and bending to whatever the media was throwing against the wall, and had it hit them full in the face when Freeh ad libbed at the press conference, stating essentially 'no evidence, but it seems to be...'.

Privately they admitted they screwed up, still do, but will never turn it around to place that light on themselves for their atrocious governance.
They scrambled to do a few things behind the scenes to get the sanctions abolished, get the wins back, etc. etc., but still failed to protect C,S,&S, who they knew did nothing wrong and had reported the 2001 incident to Dr. Jack (who dismissed it, even as a mandated reporter and proper reporting source, as he testified in the Spanier trial), but them hang in the court of public (misinformed) opinion. Those BOT were personal friends with those three, and turned their backs on them when it mattered most.

Athletics is going to do a mild honor for Joe by recreating his office in the All-Sports Museum. It's the vanilla ice cream of tributes. Meanwhile, if you know who to talk with, Joe's legacy is alive and well with behind the scenes. People behind the scenes know that we survived the internal mutiny that would have killed 99% of college football programs only because of the program and living legacy Joe had such a huge hand in building. And the poor way it was handled at PSU was a blueprint for others what not to do.

Recreate Joe's office? what, did they find a walk-in closet to repurpose? One that will no longer be needed following the stadium rebuild?

I don't know you from Adam, so I don't know your level of knowledge of all things involving this issue. That said, you're speaking with absolute certainty which makes me think you're either a: an insider or b: haven't read the plethora of information available about this topic. Whether that information is correct is another issue, but at this point as you can see by the responses, the large majority are of the same belief as the person you are disagreeing with. Speaking to the case itself (not the emotion of JoePa), when the majority of people are going one way, and you're going the opposite, that stands out.

I guess what i'm saying is, are you disagreeing from a place of insider knowledge or are you disagreeing from a place of vitriol? I truly don't care either way, but i'm always trying to take in knowledge about this topic to make sure i have an informed opinion This topic is rife with vitriol from both sides, so it's hard to know what's based on fact as opposed to what's pure opinion.

A blanket description of the BOT mebers at the time as cowards is in my opinion not accurate. There were some who were what I would label as nefarious in their intent, others in a state of shock followed the leadership that had emerged leading up to the report's release. Specifically the three who were notable as captains of industry in leadership positions of large, recognizable corporations at the national level. A few others may have been in the inner circle of those in the know.

There has been prior discussion about the timing of when the Freeh Report was released. The timing resulting in the gretaest amount of media attention. I have always held the belief that the timing was done with the idea that it was to benefit the career of Governor Corbett. Having had some peripheral connections with politicians and how they think, most as soon as they are elected are already thinking about the next step of their policticl carreer.

The Freeh Report was released in July 2012, a national election year. At that time one of the big political prizes had yet to be determined. That prize was who would be the GOP nomination for vice president. Mitt Romney had already secured the presidential nomination; Barrack Obama had a declining approval rating and was looking vulnerable. If the Freeh report had been received as anticipated, and Corbett was the VP nomination the delivery of Pennsylvania to romney would have been a huge policial coupe.

As time has gone by, it has become understood that various interested parties were in contact with Freeh during the investigation. The public and media response at the national level {and even local media) was exactly what they would have anticipated. Where they miscalculated, was the response of the Pennsylvania constituency who seemed to smell a rat. This was perhaps the first example of where the emergence of social media and message boards seemed to run counter to the narrative promulgated by mainstream media. Corbett's approval rating plummeted in Pennsylvania and accordingly, Corbett's political career.

So in summary, I don't necessarily attribute the BOT actions to cowardice. Most were at a loss with respect to how to respond. Those who had positioned themselves in leadership positions seized control of the BOT and as a consequence its actions. If what we know today was known back then, I an reasonably confident that the situation would have been handled differntly. It is notable that the three "captains of industry" exited the BOT very quickly after it became apparent that the reception of the Freeh report by alumni and Pennsyvanians in general was overwhelmingly negative,

Are we forgetting that Urban Meyer was supposedly a friend of Paterno’s and showed up at his funeral….then proceeded to poach many of Penn State’s committed recruits to his new job at Ohio State?

Well, one thing I have learned in the past 14 years is that having a discussion on this topic is the equivalent of listening to someone discuss their opinions on why the earth is flat, or, gravity doesn't exist, or Trump is a good man. It's futile. I no longer engage.

Exactly. Ohio State , Michigan and Michigan State all suffered sex abuse scandals. They emerged with reputations virtually in tact. Their trustees defended their respective universities.....perhaps because none of them needed to worry about their culpability.

Why are you and your ilk so emotionally unhinged?

Aside from being of poor form, I imagine it’s rather unhealthy, especially mentally.

Tim Beckman’s coaching career thankfully ended in 2014, but Golesh’s seems to be emerging.

And then there was Tim Beckman, who sent eight assistant coaches to State College. Beckman said his coaches never stepped on campus, that they met players in a coffee shop and a restaurant, but the rumors were that Beckman’s crew was camped outside the players’ dorm in the parking lot.

There were reports of Illinois staffers hanging around outside classrooms. I never bought the claim they never stepped on campus.
