That would at most be an extra 400K? That’s peanuts to a Big Ten athletic department.
Not really. The total expenses for wrestling in 2025 was 3.1 million so 400k would be like 13% of total spending. Wrestlings income is listed at 1.2 million. So blowing 1/3 of the money you made and 10% of your expenses to fire some coaches early instead of waiting until July doesn’t seem like a good business idea.

If the administration chooses to move on from Brands it will most likely be on or shortly after July 1st. On July 1st the buyout for the remainder of his contract goes down to 500k.
It will happen within weeks (at most) after the NCAA tournament - one decision or the other.

We’ll see. Terry and Morningstar’s contracts expire on July 1st too so if they were to pull the plug before that date they’ll be on the hook for both of their buyouts as well as 750k for Tom’s.
If I am looking at this correctly. The next transfer portal opens April 1st-30th. Plus every Iowa kid is allowed to portal 15 days after the coaching change. So if any Iowa kids would jump I'd rather the new coach know in April versus waiting until July to lose someone you cant backfill because you missed the window. Likewise you would want the new coach to take advantage of the excitement and April window as well.

I hope Beth has a coach ready to roll and the money lined up to immediately act after NCAA's are over. That's also a big time network in hotels as everyone in the sport is in the same city. A lot could come together in 4 days. If she is in Cleveland, its going down because she would more than likely be with the basketball teams if it wasnt.

Yes it matters because I asked a f'n question and I was pretty polite and respectful in doing so.
I'm not being sarcastic , I'm seriously asking does it really matter at 16 years? I believe Gable coach for 23 years so he had seven more to go. It takes time for former wrestlers to become coaches .

It's still early. And Sanderson will probably coach until his last child is out of school. And by out of school I mean he's done at Penn State. I think his youngest is in 8th grade so he'd be done at PSU in 8/9 years from now.

Can you share some of the Cael tree of wrestling coaches? Other than David Taylor, who from PSU has risen to become a Head Coach? I honestly do not know.
Cael is still fairly young, so most are assistant coaches at this point. Zain,Mark Hall,Nick Lee,Frank the tank,Jake Varner,DT obviously. I expect many more to follow. Look for Mitch Mesenbrink to be a hot commodity in the future. Nolf is one now imo. Ten years from now the Cael coaching tree will obvious imo.

Carl is only 2 years younger than Gable when he retired

When Gable retired guys had to take coaching positions to survive if they chose wrestling as a life. 150k per year in NLWC allows guys to chase world medals instead of coaching. There are also far more lucrative club deals than there were in the old days. It is one more example of the changing landscape of college wrestling. Spencer Lee would have had to be on a staff or night stocking at Hy-Vee in the olden days. Cael is in much better physical shape than Coach Gable was at the same age too. Gable had severe hip problems.

I wonder how many of these guys will be willing to take the 2nd tier type of jobs at say Indiana, Purdue, or Michigan State? There are only so many of the high profile jobs to go around. Iowa will be the biggest opportunity to be available for many years.

Beth is hopefully smart enough to know the postseason is what matters in wrestling, and making coaching decisions based on this season right now would be dumb.

She's kind of a silent assassin.

She fired the Iowa football offensive coordinator mid season; the replacement was a huge upgrade.

She fired the Iowa men's basketball coach the day after their season ended; the replacement was a huge upgrade.

While I agree with you to an extent, losing to ISU matters. Getting embarrassed at home matters. Attendance starting to falter matters.

IMO, you could add a 4th point: not gaining any momentum from the new wrestling facility matters. If anything, we've taken steps backwards since the facility opened.

Thanks for posting...glad it's getting out there...and I think this gent presented the situation very well. We need change and we need it before we become Nebraska football, which by the way I loved back in the day under Dr. Tom.
for those who decry extra benefits and undercover payments they should have hated the Osborn era. almost as bad as today’s NIL.

I was never aware of all the inner shenanigans of college sports; I just enjoyed watching college football. For me it was Hayden Fry and Dr. Tom on Saturdays during the season. Raised in Sioux City so Lincoln was even closer than Iowa City...

Lincoln Parent Program anyone... and that's really nothing to the insane amount of witness and evidence tampering Osborne did. And allowing his players to continue to play while being investigated for extremely serious charges.

Lived in Omaha in the 80’s. They didn’t try to hide it.
