So Drew Pearson’s #88 wasn’t retired?
Raises in interesting question. Drew’s career at TU wasn’t worthy of having his number retired. His NFL career was of course spectacular. Does a school retire a player’s number based on his professional career?

Absolutely not. And personally, the way he whined for years and years about not getting into the Pro FB HOF turned me against him.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought TU only retired football #'s for All Americans or NFL HOFers (and if it is HOFers maybe Pearson isn't far behind since he just got into the hall a couple years ago).

Most of the numbers TU has retired are not NFL HOFers

Honestly I added HOF in there because I didn't realize he earned an All America accolade (he was well before my time at TU and I only really became aware of him in his later years with the Seahawks). So the AA honors being the key would explain why Pearson's hasn't been retired.

Did Chris Penn get AA honors his senior season? He was freaking ridiculous. Same with Mills?

Answered my own questions: Penn was 2nd team AA in '93. Mills was 2nd team AA in 2005.

Maybe we should be asking why their numbers haven't been retired.

And there are also a ton of football AA who haven't had their numbers retired. I wonder if that's because every publication does their own AA list now.

Mills I bet was because he really had only 1 good year. It was an amazing year but it was just that one year.

Chris Penn had a very short career with us. Played in 1991 and had an ok season. Didnt play in 1992. Played in 1993 and had his standout year. Then went to NFL.

So maybe both Mills and Penn is lack of consistently good years?
Im just guessing.

Mills was our leading receiver and was all-conference first team in '03, '04 and '05. The problem is that he only had 1 year with Paul Smith. He doubled his receiving yards once Smith became the starter at QB.

We have several 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All-Americans whose numbers are not retired. Lovie Smith comes to mind.
