It hurts everyone because when these tickets sell quickly, the price of all other seats rises as a result. It proves there's a market for higher prices. Stadiums and events everywhere are reducing lower margin general seating and replacing it with high margin premium seats. As someone that has no desire for the premium seating, I hate this move. It ends up with both higher prices for general seating due to trickling down pricing effect as the market for high prices gets proven via sales, and increase demand for general seating as the cheap seat capacity gets reduced year after year.
They are soon going to embark on putting a premium on every ticket and parking space to help offset the cost of NIL. They are also going to put a premium on every ticket to help cover the cost for the west side tear down and rebuild. As soon as that is done the east side is already being planned. Parking spots around the stadium will be lost as they increase the footprint.
At minimum the increase in a ticket will be no less than 25% and one could imagine as high as 50% or greater in a year or two. It is, after all, a business and it needs to bring in revenue. I sit in a variety of seats, occasionally sitting on the 40 twenty five rows up. This area has become a party zone with folks selling their tickets ever weekend to folks who spend handsomely to come to one or two games a season. Many ticket holders have reasons not to attend every game and may as well make what they can from owning the seats for the season.
Penn State football is an expensive proposition for the fan and it is going to get a lot more expensive. That’s just reality. Having had lunch recently with a couple of the higher ups, they do not care about the touchy feely fans that made up their base for so many years. They care about raising enough money to pay for everything because their jobs are on the line.
Let me rephrase that. They care, they are sympathetic, but there is nothing they can do about it. Prices will rise. And for folks looking for more than just a handful of football games out of Beaver Stadium, the overhaul is necessary.
