Got a new record player for my birthday and new records. First record played through with no problems. Second and third record skipped. Taped a nickel on the needle and it stopped the skipping. Is this the records or the arm and needle? They're all reissues.

My Howard Jones album cassette's tape got stuck in my zipper and won't unravel.

Listening to music just sucks, I guess.

It's basic. Cheap for the most part. No way for me to adjust the tone arm. It has a cue lever and that's it.

This is most likely the problem. Need to be able to adjust tonearm counter balance, height and cartridge alignment. All of these add up to the angle at which the stylus sits in the groove. Also need to be able to adjust the anti-skate. If any of these are off, it'll sound bad and it'll skip.

There is an off chance that you have a bad pressing. I recently bought a reissue of Californication on vinyl and it won't play for crap. My TT is setup properly, it's just a really bad pressing. It happens.

FWIW, a cheap TT will destroy your vinyl. My advice is to buy a decent player and a good cartridge. Good luck.

Don't do this. Stylus is metal and it'll eat thru vinyl. Besides, 5 grams is more weight that you'd ever want to apply to a cartridge. You've probably also created a situation where the body of the cartridge is rubbing the face of the vinyl with this much weight, which is putting scratches in your records.

Again. Spend the few extra bucks on a halfway decent player. Craigslist if you have to.
