New Stokes Update.... (Not Good)

Right before BBM, while everyone was talking about Stokes being a done deal and crystal balls and whatnot, Pope was saying in a press conference that we don’t need the #1 player. First, he’s right about that. Skill, experience, selflessness and intelligence matter more with Pope’s system that pure talent. Second, that may have been a hint that things weren’t quite as certain internally about Stokes being a Cat, but who knows. I’d like to have him but if we don’t get him, I’m good. Either way, if Pope is your coach, you win.

Yeah, now I don't see him coming here. Do we really want a dude who can't decide if he wants to come to UK when we've been on his recruitment for a long time? Go get one of Holt or Collins and call it a day.
How long have we actually been recruiting him? Seems like it wasn’t until recently that it really picked up. I didn’t hear anything before the last few months. I’m honestly asking because I don’t have a clue.

boozer and dp and aj have olayed better than any senior this yr 🤷🏽‍♂️
Lol, bro it’s preseason.
Also, remember last season when the National championship game was played by two teams chock full of one and done freshman? Oh wait never mind. But I bet OAD freshman have just dominated college basketball with natty after natty as well right? Oh wait, they also didn’t do that either, considering I went through every national championship team since 1985 on this very website and the results were undeniably obvious —- continuity matters more than nearly any other factor for national championships. And guess what? If you’re starting freshman, that means you do not have continuity. If you wanna sprinkle in one or two into the rotation every year, I’m with you, but your expectation that anyone is going to have buyers remorse on trying to win with multi-year players is not rooted in reality.

When everyone said UK is done deal, I knew it would be 1 week and we’d be out of the running. Guys, this is all agent speak. They are taking bids. Say Kentucky is a done deal and other teams go up. Tell Kentucky they’re being passed up and Kentucky raises their bid.

Really don’t understand why this is so hard to get at this point. My advice as someone who’s been doing (following recruiting and been involved in a few) 25 years, it’s not worth following. It’s going to be like this year in and year out. Focus on the team and let Pope play in the recruiting game. You are never going to know what’s really going on.

Or keep doing it and go through this endless cycle year in and year out. If you enjoy it then you’ll get to do this over and over.

Players go where the money is and you have to pay and is reason have no problem with the coaching staff paying Stokes or any other recruit whatever amount they are asking for. The transfers we have on this team came here because UK paid them the most not because they just love UK.
The original post with the Trilly info is similar to what Pilgrim said today on a podcast. Teams are not going to stop pursuing until he commits but still feels it’s UK

Some are saying his recruitment is wide open and wouldn’t be shocked if he doesn’t commit to Kansas.

True. But the narrative will change again when none of them are in the final four.

I wouldn’t say no to Stokes. And if it turns out we had to pony up for him to get him i’m still okay with it as long as we have a really good roster around him as well.

But if getting a guy like that means you can’t get other stars AS WELL AS a solid group of role players and bench pieces to go with it for w/e reasons (ie not enough money left over, not enough guys that are willing to take a back seat to a freshman) than it’s not worth it.

To me, 3 freshman at the top with the next 20-30-50 however many best players in the sport all being returnees does not equal “freshman dominating the sport”. Unless they have their teams all among the top 5.

But if the eventual champion once again ends up as an upper class dominated squad, then you’d still rather have that.

Even before covid and the super senior the sport wasn’t dominated by freshman. You had 2 teams post 1 and done win the title with mostly freshman starting lineups. 2012 UK and 2015 Duke.

Freshman have never really dominated the sport.

The key is meshing a Stokes like recruit with the returning guys we have. He is good enough to help lead us to a title. It’s different than Cal relying on him and two other freshman to lead us to wins.
