New Stokes Update.... (Not Good)

Honestly, I think the majority of the time , we are not “in the lead” as reported. Last year all the recruiting “guru’s “ were saying that about Caleb Wilson and after he committed to UNC it came out that he had always favored the heels and we were never really “in the lead”. Then everyone points at CMP and yells “How’d you lose him “ .
Yep I agree. These agents aren’t morons…they know Kentucky basketball has deep pockets and it’s only to their benefit to play UK against all other suitors because it’s a great way to raise the bag level. That’s why I believe it’s becoming very common to hear “rumors to Kentucky” for so many guys. It isn’t going to change in the NIL era and fans should just learn what it is, rather than end up frustrated.

Great point!

I have heard enough from CMP now on his recruiting/roster building philosophy here at UK and have seen enough in what he has put together for rosters in two recruiting/portal cycles to be fully confident that he and the staff have a plan that will work and have the tools, resources, and intelligence to execute that plan to build a competitive roster every year.

In his first year, starting completely from scratch and with limited time, he put together a roster that was competitive, capable of winning at the highest level when healthy, fun to watch, full of seemingly high-character quality guys, with no chemistry issues who all seemed to 'get' what BBN means and played at least to some degree for the name on the front of the jersey.

In his second year, after a very promising first season was derailed somewhat by injuries, he recognized the limitations of that first roster and recognized what it takes roster-wise to compete and win at the highest level. He built a second roster that is much deeper, much more athletic, likely much better defensively, and seemingly very well situated to win even more than in his first year.

I have full faith and confidence that he will build teams that will win at the level we expect to win at, are a joy to watch, and are teams we will be proud of ... regardless of whether he pulls from HS ranks, portal, or returning players. If Stokes, or anyone else, doesn't want to be a part of the goliath that I feel is being built here, then so be it. I am not concerned.

Go Big Blue ...
I agree with this. Pope has a plan. We may not know what it is or even agree. But he has a plan. He’s not just throwing bait out there and catching what he can.

And his plan seems to be a good one.

Pope has unlimited NIL money to spend or not spend at his discretion.

One thing we can all agree on is that Pope will do everything in his power to win games for UK.

I think you can lump Kansas and Duke into that same conversation. Both programs known to have and spend money on top recruits in spades. And to a lesser extent in this new era Louisville and Arkansas (both willing to overspend). Agents are smart and rumoring to be "leading" with this school, or this school is "making a late push" that involves those schools almost directly points to a last ditch money grab. Most of these players know exactly where they are going, the only question is how much can you squeeze from them in NIL before you commit. The only "last minute changed his mind" stuff going on is I'm committing to X school unless you back up the brinks truck and offer me a stupid amount of money (and then that desperate school does). Collins upcoming announcement will tell a lot about the landscape of who is going where as the rest of the dominos start to fall. I don't think Stokes goes to Kansas.

So I’m gonna be honest. I don’t see this guy as a transcendent recruit. Don’t get me wrong, he’s REALLY good! However, I just don’t think he’s other worldly or anything. Would much rather have a senior Mo D at the 3/4 than this guy anyway. JMO.

Careful. I got called “dumb” for even asking that yesterday. Jamie Shaw told me that Stokes would “prooooooobably?? be top ten in last years class”. That doesn’t sound like a transcendent recruit to me .

WOW! No wonder I didn’t find him extremely impressive, like one would think of a #1 ranked player nationally. Idk I’m just not that thrilled with this guy.

EDIT: Would I like to have him? Yes. Would I pay 8/9 million for him? Hell no!

I will say though, I found out later that Rivals rankings are based on nba projections (which seems weird to me) and Stokes will most likely have a bigger “college “ impact than some guys ranked higher. I think cause he’s a “tweener“ at this point.

I know one thing, I'm not gonna live and die by who signs with us as we'll get our share and I'm SURE not going to let an Anon get me in an uproar. 🤣

If we don't get this guy, which is my assumption at this point, I think I have come to the conclusion that in the current atmosphere of college ball since the portal and players getting paid, Pope is not going to play the highest bidder no matter what game. Everyone talks about us having the biggest payroll, yet for some reason we don't get any of the top 5 guys anymore. I think Pope has a number he's willing to pay and when these kids say this school offered me more, Pope says good luck kid. I really think that's how it is. I think he's a great coach and want him here for many years. I just had to accept that we likely won't be getting the top studs while he's here.

I gotta be honest. Stokes just doesn’t seem like a Kansas guy to me. Not even thinking about the brands. Then you add that in, I just don’t see Kansas as the place.

Now, where I could see him going is Oregon. Nike school, seems like a kid who wants to “create his own path”, keeps him out west where he’s grown up.

I think it’s Oregon or Kentucky. Maybe Louisville as a dark horse due to family connections and being his “home”. The hold up could truly be Nike figuring out a way that they are okay with him going to Louisville. Time will tell. We will be fine either way.

I seriously don't even keep up with recruiting anymore. Like at all.
It's madness. Too much out of your control to worry about. They can get hurt anyway and not play. Just see who suits up each game and see it as 2 hours of entertainment.

Is it possible we miss out on all of our high school targets? If so, will Pope make staff changes for next season?

I don’t think so. We project to have a lot of returners and it’s a very weak HS class. Also “recruiting” is much more of a free agency than it is recruiting we like to think of. Many guys we “lost” we could’ve had with a larger offer. Kinda like Florida losing Aberdeen but having even more money for other guards they preferred.

My suspicion: Pope overpays for one of Stokes or Holt to get a top prospect no matter what. Similar to how he bumped that Jasper offer way up last summer to keep the 5 star Lexington kid home to avoid the perception of losing him to Alabama(or wherever else if my memory serves me).

I hope we land at least 2 recruits. We have offered several guys, and a lot have visited here but we keep striking out.
