So who does DT go after to fill the open coaching spot? Anyone hearing anything? Some names that come to mind from either being OK State guys, DT guys, or good light weight coaches.

Daton Fix?: OK State guy
Coleman Scott?: OK State guy
BJ Futrell?: Was a good lightweight. Currently at Northwestern
Joe Colon?: Was a good lightweight, I know he had a few years coaching. Not sure if he still is or not.
Frank Molinaro?: Currently at Arizona State. Penn State link to DT.
Kyle Dake?: Who everyone probably wants.
AJ Schopp?: Was a really good lightweight, had success with Matt Ramos at Purdue. I believe he is now at Edinboro.
Evan Henderson?: Has had tremendous success with lightweights at Lehigh.

No love for Terry Brands? ;)
I like BJ but maybe too much Illinois on the staff.
Someone not on the list above?

You guys don't want Spence? He'd be wise to escape the "cancer culture" that are TnT and grow into coaching elsewhere. Not too many better places to unlearn Iowa style than under DT and OSU.

I wouldn’t be opposed

Several of the above would be good. Other names pop into my head including Gary Wayne Harding or how about going into the head coaching ranks and consider Troy Nickerson from Northern Colorado or Neil Erisman from UALR. Erisman might be reeling from the defections from his program and we could most likely pay either of these two head coaches more than they make now. Both are proving coaching talents.

Wouldn’t be opposed to those ideas either. Seems like a bit of a longshot for a guy to step down from a HC role, but we are seeing that in other sports. Not a bad idea to at least throw out a lifeline.

(This is a total sidebar, and I’m not against OSU going after HCs for their open role): Unfortunately it once again highlights the delimma for so many other programs. We need UNC & UALR to be as strong as they can be.

I don’t want to see a world of 5-6 programs that matter. Even if you do rise to the top, it feels watered down.

He would be pretty ideal, but I doubt he would consider leaving

I mean twist my arm if Spencer Lee wants to come down to Stillwater, but he and Daton are the same international weight. I also think that kid is Iowa to the bone and I’ll be honest that him leaving Iowa would be an even bigger deal than DT leaving PSU (to me).

Lee is the reason Gilman left Iowa right? He did not want to train with his top competition for the US Team spot?

Other than Dake I’m out and this list isn’t happening. Schopp wouldn’t be bad but give me Seth Gross. Great guy, would fit well with the current staff. I’m all in on him.

You don’t think Fix would take the job?

Edit: or that DT wouldn’t hire him right now?

Seth Gross would be an interesting one as well. I think he has a unique story and is obviously tremendously skilled. Not sure I’ve heard or read anything about him as a coach though.
He was one of the first names suggested on X, to this same question

Everyone at PSU talks about how much Jordan Conaway helps in the RTC. I hope DT doesn’t take him away but it’s someone I’ve thought of. He was a 2x AA for PSU at 125 and 133.
In other sports, the top athletes usually don’t make the best coaches. In wrestling, the top coaches, generally are the top athletes. I wonder if that is by perception and the non AA wrestlers don’t get the opportunities due to pedigree or the top athletes are truly the better coaches. Just my opinion, but, if you take a close to top performing athlete, who may have had to work harder than most to get where they are, due to lack of natural ability, that athlete would probably make a better coach. That doesn’t explain Coach Cael and DT though.

Any ideas on who could be getting this job? Also is this a new position or is it going to take the place of the assistant coach opening?

When I interviewed with DT, he said he got some crazy applications from internet freaks. Sorry but it's the truth Chase. 🤞

I wore my PSU Wrestling sweatshirt to the interview. He noticed my obvious intelligence right away and offered me the job but I declined out of respect for Cael. TRUE STORY
He wasn't talking about me, I am weirdo in person too...not just the internet. AND, if you would've worn that PSU shirt into our room, he would've taken it off of you, filled with your appendages, and beat you over the head with it.

You might not be a bad hire though? I would bet you have to lie on the app less than I did!

You were great in person except for the orange garb. That was offputting. Expand your horizons with some blue. I have a 50/50 chance of beating DT in the room while he is in a coma. All that said, I declined the gracious $500k per year offer. An assistant should never outshine his superior.

That's the best TRUE STORY I have for you guys!!

It's been 9 days. So when does DT name his next lightweight assistant, or does he go with an assistant that helps all weights?

I honestly don't know, just rumblings of names here and there...nothing claiming to know.

But, the fact that it is posted means they may be close to a hire. It has to be posted for several days for it to be a legal hire.
