Assuming we get no more high school recruits for this year. There are already a few on the transfer portal two of which had productive careers in the Ivy League. Any thoughts or scuttlebutt on this. One is a stretch 4 who would be a good backup for Nance

What’s known on why Javon Freeman, from Valpo, did not become a cat?

Dude averaging 22/6 as a Sophomore.

It would be nice to add a veteran point guard. We’ve already seen what a confident guy like Spencer can do for the rest of the guys.

Berry might be a four-year starter, or Buie might make the sophomore leap, but we can’t count on it.

The impact Charlie Moore is having at DePaul is remarkable. Had the chance to see him play live at Minnesota. Smart floor general type

i agree. and a front court of Nance, Jones, Beran, Young, Nicholson is promising. not sure adding minutes there helps

i think it just depends on what we see out of jones throughout the year
I also think it depends on how many contributing players they have. If they are stuck with just 10 or 11 scholarship players (including Greer who is deep in the Collins dog house) they won't have the luxury of red shirting anyone.

Guessing Greer was not red-shirted as it was hard to predict Spencer would be this solid a contributor.

Greer is no threat to score. That's why he's not out there, not because he's in the "doghouse."

and honestly because Pat Spencer is really pretty good (on MOST DI teams not just NU) and because Buie is a better prospect. and Ty Berry probably will be too.

I know it’s probably too early to know for sure, but what likely happens to Greer? Transfer? And bring in a grad PG next year to backstop Buie and Berry?

Again, long season, injuries happen and maybe Greer will be forced into action. But feels a lot like a repeat of Ash/Brown already.

Greer should be in the gym shooting 3s at every opportunity if he wants to play ANYWHERE in division 1 bball. He has a pretty good handle and not a bad defender but he's no threat to take it to the rack so he's got to find a way to provide some offense. He also had a key missed free throw when he was in late in the game against Merrimack.

If you're going to be a good program, this will likely happen every year. It seems most D1 teams lose 1-2 underclassmen to the transfer portal every year. There are many reasons, including homesickness, bad fit, team conflict, coaching change, whatever, but most of them are players who got recruited over. No one should ever be forced out, but if we're not losing kids who got recruited over, then we're losing ground to just about every other D1 school.

Another reason why NU should stop with we are smarter then everyone else mantra.

We've gotten several highly regarded four-star recruits the past few years with the standards that are in place with Kopp and Nance being two of the most recent. Just have to start performing on the floor as well as the rating lists.

I wouldn’t give up on Greer. He has some fight in him and that may translate into the kind of effort that will earn minutes if he keeps developing his skills - and definitely if he develops an effective outside shot.

It may or may not be this year, but he could earn more playing time down the road.

With Buie looing better with each game and the highly touted LG coming in next season, he's going to have a tough time getting PT.

We tend to overestimate what 4 stars really are, because they seem like a big deal around here. In truth 4 stars like Kopp, Nance and Beran are top 75-ish players which means by definition there are 70+ players in their own class who are more highly rated. Not to mention the hundreds of older players who are as highly or more highly rated. A top 75 ranking is a kid who projects to be an above average big ten player by their junior year by my calculation. Nance, Kopp and Beran look fine by that measure.

While Gaines has assumed the Sanjay Lumpkin role of a glue guy who can serve as a Swiss Army Knife on defense and occasionally contribute on offense (Sanjay was really good about picking his spots), maybe Greer can become that guy. Though a 6'2", he lacks the length to much in the front court. Still, there is a role for a guy who can help set a defensive tone and not be a liability on the other end.

Yeah. When it comes to the PG rotation, Greer is behind Spencer, Buie and Turner (even though PG is Tuner's secondary position). With Ty Berry and Chase Audige being added to the mix at guard next season, it won't get any easier for Greer to crack the rotation.

@haywood jahblowme: Have you heard anything about Audige's performance in practices and scrimmages? His signing was a bit under the radar, but I am really excited by his highlights from last season.

I agree. It will take hard work and noticeable development for him to get pt. That certainly isn’t a given. And it does look like CCC is going to have plenty of guards to go around next year, too. I’ve seen enough grit from Greer that I’m just not writing him off already.

Greer came to NU when he could have stayed for another season in HS. I hope he makes it. Nice kid too.

On the one hand, simply accepting a scholarship a year early can’t really be considered a selfless or charitable act. That said, Greer’s willingness to sacrifice that prep school year speaks very well of the kid. The future depth chart makes pretty clear that he’ll never be a high-minutes guy (except in the case of injuries) but I’m hoping he gets a few big moments in purple over the next 2 1/2 years.
