NHL playoffs

I imagine not a lot of hockey fans in KY or on here. I'm not a big one, but.... the Hurricanes is our only PRO team in the Triangle (if you don't count AAA Durham Bulls), so I try to follow them, and have watched most of the Canes playoff games this spring (& try to go to at least 1 game every year).
Last night was game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers (game just 2 miles from where I live).
Game went into OT last night. In playoffs they do full 20-min period OTs (regulation is 3 20-min periods). Last night's game Florida won 3-2 in the final seconds of the 4th OT. I think they said it was the 6th longest NHL game ever (I guess they used to play until a winner in regular season, but now they have a much more abbreviated OT then shoot-out). That is like they played 2 and 1/3 games in one night.
To put it in perspective:
- MLB game is 9 innings; so the equivalent would be a 21 inning game
- NBA game is 48-min with 5min OT; so equivalent would be a 12-13 OT game
- NFL game is 60-min currently with 10min OT; so equivalent would be an 8 OT game

One of the Canes players, it was his first game back after getting a broken hand a month ago. Welcomed back with a marathon game. I guess he could still skate and do cardio w/ broken hand.

Fellow Caniac here (north of Charlotte). Last night sucked. Bobrovsky is stopping everything and Florida just looks faster.

Interesting fact, after 6 OT's, the official rules apparently call for a second puck to be introduced to the game. This hasn't happpened since 1936. I thought they would just go to 4v4.

Either way, tomorrow is a must win. Not having Svetch and Patches is finally starting to cost us.

Going to be a great series. Both teams are similar, both play very fast and like to hit. Bob has been amazing this run. Go Cats

I was worried our week long layoff after ending Devils series in 5 games would hurt us. And the timing was off, lots of turnovers and icing. Last night/this morning should have knocked the rust off.
It's definitely tough to lose your only all-star.

But how in the F*** would 2 pucks work? I like 4v4, that makes much more sense.

Yes, tomorrow is a must win!!

Someone was pulling your leg regarding the overtime rules. There is no rule that calls for a second puck.

The NHL was mad when Russia and the Ukraine went to war and decided to take it out on the Greatest hockey player ever. They had the refs screw the Capitals the last 3rd of the season to make them miss the playoffs. Otherwise they would be up 3-0 in the conference finals.

The NHL can’t do anything to Gretzky. He’s been retired for years.

I do not watch ONE NHL regular season game. I watch ALL of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Florida / Carolina will be a hell of a series. I do not think Dallas has the defense to slow Edmonton down. I believe it will be Edmonton / Florida in the finals with Edmonton winning. I hope not, Murica and what not. USA, USA,,, with 90% foreign players of course. I just do not want to have to sit thru 2 countries national anthems. One is enough, I do not want to hear O'Canada.

I thought I was the only one that watches all the Stanley Cup Playoff games but none of the regular season ones, I just love Playoff Hockey for some reason.

It is kind of like the NBA and MLB. During the regular season you get some half *** efforts (they can't go all out for 82 162 games), but the playoffs roll around, totally different situation. That is my reasoning. Unlike the NFL, where you can't afford to take and Sundays off, not enough games. SO I do watch the whole season of the NFL, they bring it every week. Well except the last couple weeks when resting and tanking takes place.

In person playoff hockey is the single greatest sporting event I've ever had the joy of watching and it was a game 2 (couldnt imagine a game 7).

I think my canes get over the hump this year as we have more diverse scoring options and are riding the best goalie (and defense) in the playoffs thus far.

As long as Sam Bennetts elbow stays holstered it should be a great series. Florida is fast, tough and has about as good a line 1 to 3 (and easily the best 3rd line) in all of hockey.

I don’t have much interest in hockey, but I told my wife that maybe next season, we’d go to a preseason Panthers game. I’ve always heard it’s better in person and it’s not too far away. I like fishing the Tamiami canal, so a hockey game, hotel and spending the next day fishing our way back to Fort Pierce from Tamiami up to Belle Glade sounds nice.

I'm a big Leafs fan and am bummed at how the season ended. If Stolarz wasn't injured in game 1 I think we would have beaten Florida.

I do miss the Thouroughblades though.

I brought this thread back from the dead in honor of the Cats quest to repeat with Lord Stanley.

The West finals should be a dandy too. Game 1 Oilers/Stars tonight.

Cats dropped the hammer on Canes tonight. 🔥🔥

They're frustrating Carolina into playing petty hockey. Svech and Gost are playing stupid and half our guys are hunting big hits instead of playing with speed/ puck control.

Barely any chip and chase and defense in front of Andersen has been horrible.

All credit to Florida. I hate half of the team's antics but it's effective. Don't see this one going longer than 5 (if that long) if Carolina decides to keep trying to play Florida's game.

On paper, these are two great Conference Finals. But I think they'll both go 4-2 or so.

As an Avs fan (and season-ticket holder), it pains me to say that the Stars are just nasty now that they are healthy.

Are our Canes successful due to the system, but just don’t have the Dudes to win it?

I would argue they have the worst roster of the four teams remaining. We have good players but no superstars that are consistent. Svech is having his first postseason with a goal streak. Aho has been OK and Jarvis hasn't quite played to his capabilities. Carolina suffers from being a non-traditional hockey scene that does not appeal to big name stars. It's why Guentzel walked and Rantanen seemed unlikely to sign.

Also consider that both Guentzel and Rantanen went to teams with no state income tax. The Canes are positioned well with 30 million in cap space, only a few free agents (Orlov and Burns) and good talent in the pipeline. Hopefully Morrow and Nikishin take Orlov and Burns spots in the lineup, Chatty goes to the top pairing with Slavin and we land a few big fish goal scorers.

Also, our goaltending is great until it isn't. Freddie was the best goalie in the playoffs until the Panthers started cracking him. Kooch isn't a starter (getting the start tonight FYI, hoping for a spark). I'm glad we didn't sell the farm for Hellebuyck, but we need to find someone this offseason as our primary net minder. I know they won't because they just extended Freddie, but he's made out of glass and wildly inconsistent.

Finally, Rod Brind'Amour is the one thing we have to keep locked down. Fans get antsy about him as a coach but he just wins and will continue to do so if we cut him loose. His system isn't the prettiest but it's damn effective, just need him to make some lineup changes tonight that actually get us over the hump.

The East finals has been complete domination by the Panthers. I’m a little surprised, Carolina is a really good team, I thought this would go 6 games for sure. Canes on the verge of being swept in the East finals for the 4th time in a row.

I think we will get 6-7 game series in the West finals though. Game 3 Sunday afternoon in Edmonton.
