Nice article explaining why collegiate athletics are on life support.

Something that needs to be addressed is what I heard last night while watching the football game between Miami and Ole Miss; the quarterback for Miami, Carson Beck was playing in his 7th year of college football.

Whomever ends up running college sports need to go back to some of the basics of where all this started and build from there. 4 years of eligibility unless one year of medical redshirt is enough.

If these kids want to be paid then they need to have some sort of restrictions on them like professional sports does in salary caps, free agency only when their contract run out, and allow teams to fine them for breaking team rules.

I never ever ever want to hear the words "student athlete" again. These young men and women are basically pro players that just happen to be going to 'ahem' school.

They've got to control this transferring revolving door. You get to transfer once without penalty of sitting out a year unless your coach leaves or retires. Otherwise you sit out a year.

Is academic eligibility even a thing anymore ??

And guess who was leading the charge for athletes to be paid...

"Dan Wolken has consistently argued that college athletes should be compensated, emphasizing that the current model of amateurism is outdated and increasingly untenable. In a 2023 opinion piece, he noted that a national survey found 67% of American adults believe college athletes should be paid—not just through name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, but through direct compensation from schools. He criticized the NCAA's long-standing argument that paying athletes would harm the appeal of college sports, calling it historically and spectacularly wrong. Wolken has also highlighted the economic reality that athletes generate hundreds of millions in revenue, making the idea of them being unpaid students increasingly untenable in the modern era."

It's funny how these reporters stood on their soap box demanding pay for play but now they cry about the system being broken.

So in other words Dan, S T F U!

product is better than ever and tv ratings are at all time highs. this is a fake "broken" argument by a select few who are just pissed about being passed by.
You thought the Ole Miss situation this year was the way the game is supposed to go down?

Other coaches have bailed on a team headed to the playoffs? Who?

To be technically correct, Sumrall and Chesney did the same thing this year. People just gave them a pass because their teams weren’t expected to be legitimate threats in the playoff and coaches leaving schools like that for the power conferences is how things are expected to work. I feel like this only really furthers the point you were responding to though. What Kiffin did wasn’t actually all that unique except that he burned an SEC school.

factual bro
Little too literal bro. You got a BCS example? NFL? You said it happened a lot. Seems like you should be able to point to more than one. I’m legit curious here too. The fact I can’t think of it ever happening doesn’t mean much.

College Athletics died a few years ago. Anyone that thinks otherwise, is delusional.

That isn't happening without unionization. The reason these things are somewhat controlled in pro sports is the unions. I can't stand them but in this situation they actually help.

Yep. We’re just bitter. Most of the SEC has passed by Kentucky in pretty much every sport, including basketball.

Kentucky is dangerously close to becoming an afterthought to Kentuckians if it continues down this road. Younger fans will start supporting other successful teams local teams like Indiana and Louisville while older fans stop caring altogether. Many of us don’t want to accept that we’re dying in the modern era, we’re looking to blame everyone but ourselves. We’re watching helplessly as Indiana of all schools is the favorites to win the football championship while UConn is dangerously close to passing us in the title race in basketball.

I’m already losing interest. Right now I’m coping, hoping that something changes this offseason but if it doesn’t, I think I’m done for a couple years. Kentucky basketball is no longer worth my emotional investment. There’s no fun in being miserable all the time. It’s just too much for me to continue.

College? Semi pro ball.
If I want to watch pros I’ll watch the best ones.
Still watch UK but have faded away from watching other “college” games.
Also have been attending some High School football, baseball and basketball games. Student athletes playing for the joy of playing amateur sports. Enjoying it. Easy to attend cheap and fast competitive games.
