Nit-Picking the ACC Awards

I look at the awards every year but I’ve never analyzed the voting process. To be honest, I know “media members” and coaches vote but I’m not entirely sure on how it plays out when it comes to who votes for what and who. Anyway, I find this puzzling... I need an explanation.

ACC 1st team: 2nd pick - RJ, 371 votes
ACC 2nd team: 4th pick - Coby, 176 votes

ACC ROY
2nd place - RJ, 21 votes
3rd place - Coby, 2 votes

Adds up... ok.... now wait a minute...

ACC Freshman Team
2nd pick - Coby, 67 votes
3rd pick - RJ, 66 votes

So let me get this straight — RJ is virtually voted as the 2nd best player in the ACC while Coby is near the end of the second team with 195 less votes than RJ. In the ROY award, our guy gets 21 votes. Coby barely notes in 3rd place with 2 votes...... But the all-freshman team he’s 3rd place losing by 1 vote to a guy he destroyed otherwise in the award races that directly correlates to this voting.

What? o_O

A lot of the media are unx grads/fans in this area.

If that were the case then I'd think Kenny Williams would have been 1st team all defense.

I think every fan base hates award voting and finds things against their guys. Most sports media are idiots IMO, doesn't matter who you root for.

I want to know how three voters leave Coby White off their rookie ballot and four leave RJ off. I mean, how in the world aren't both of those guys unanimous selections?

Having said that, I know a guy who has a vote for MLB HOF every year. He told me 15 years ago that he'll often leave someone off his list who he knows will get in, just to get someone else an extra vote (each writer can vote for 10 guys). He also said that's why you seldom see a guy with 100% of the vote because other journalists are doing the same thing. In fact, wasn't Mariano Rivera the first guy to be on every writer's ballot just this year? I'm too lazy to look it up.

Yes he was. We actually brought that up OTPC and @dukehokie talkee about a few writers he knows who have votes- check it out. It’s absurd.

I’m not saying that to be a wise a**. The media here is pro heel. It is what it is.

It's been a long season, but remember the guy who would not vote Duke #1 because we hadn't played a "true road game"? Even after beating Kentucky by 200 points?

It's easy to vote your own agenda when nobody really cares about your vote because it makes no difference.

I get all of that. Even if it’s predominately pro-heel, fine. But wouldn’t that make ALL the voting sway to Coby ahead of RJ in all 3 categories?

I just find it weird that Coby doesn’t hold a candle to RJ’s votes in 2 awards that’s directly tied to the award Coby gets a nod in. Weird.

Nolan Ryan wasn’t unanimous. That tells me all I need to know about the integrity and accuracy of the voting
