It did. I saw it yesterday and slept like a log last night. Now I can't prove this, but I'm pretty sure HBO released this info solely because of me. You're welcome, World.
I think you are right. In the NY Daily News article I saw, they had a transcript of a producers' meeting at HBO prior to the release of the graphic:
Weiss: What's that accountant in WV whining about this time?
Martin: Apparently, it wasn't clear to him who Jon Snow's dad is based on Lyanna's location and fear for his safety.
Benioff: Please tell me we aren't going to release something to spoon-feed the answer to this guy?
Martin: Normally, I would agree that we shouldn't do that, but this guy has been emailing me every 15 minutes. Annoying little cuss.
Benioff: Send it to your spam folder. Why is this my problem?
Martin: I'm an old. What the [deleted] is a spam folder?
Weiss: He's just going to stir up more people to bug George even if George figures out some technology this side of a sword.
Benioff: Again, why is this my problem? It'll make the guy hungrier for the next season - maybe even stir up more interest with all of his whining to his friends.
Weiss: Here's my idea. Let's release some insane looking graphic that basically gives a who's who of the Mad King overthrow. It won't look like we're knuckling under to this guy, but it'll shut him up and give George time to not finish writing the book he's been "working" on for the last decade.
Martin: [Deleted] you, jack wagon!
Weiss: Is it untrue?
Martin: Just shut the kid up.
Benioff: I can go for the goofy graphic. Let's do it.
