It was pretty obvious all along Jon Snow wasn't just a Stark bastard and I had heard the rumors that he was part Targa...Targy...Dragon people, but why did we not hear that dude's name? Long con by the showrunners, or is the popular theory wrong on the father?

Did she have a name for the baby at that point? I mean she just gave birth and was bleeding out...not sure she had put together a list of names.

I meant the baby's daddy's name. Obvi that was Jon Snow.
Well, way back in season one we see Ned and Robert — who are close friends and political allies, let's recall — arguing about whether they should assassinate Daenerys way off in distant Essos. Robert, you see, believes that any surviving Targaryen child is a mortal threat to his regime. Ned believes that murdering children is wrong and they should let Daenerys be.

I don't see how that has anything to do with my question? The long running rumor was Jon Snow's parents were Lyanna Stark Rhegar Targsomething. Clearly his mom is Lyanna Stark, but we don't find out who the father is. Earlier this season young Ned/Doogie Howser killed (helped kill) that badass double sword dude who was clearly there to protect a valuable asset over Rhegar himself. I guess this is a long way of me asking for a timeline, but is it possible this is the Mad King and Lyanna's baby, ie Dani's brother and not Dani's nephew?

Ned and Lyanna would both know, in other words, that the new regime could never allow Rhaegar's son to survive. Ned, not wanting to murder his nephew, came up with the idea of simply pretending that he's not Rhaegar's son. He would, instead, claim Jon as his own son by some unknown woman and then raise him among his family up north.

LOL. I still think you are missing my point. I understand why Ned lied about who he was, I'm simply wondering who Jon Snow's father is. It's that simple.

To my knowledge, Rhaegar was never King. Wouldn't Jon Snow be more important if he was a King's son?

I'm finally all caught up. Binged yesterday so I could watch last night.

This thread is filling some blanks I was drawing with the flashback scene. I thought they were getting at the fact that Jon was more than a bastard. I have no idea who his father is.

Do you think they are setting up tension between Jon and Stansa? I wouldn't think so but the way that scene ended with the glance at Little Finger I couldn't tell.

A couple of thoughts from episode 9: LOL at Ramsay. Cersie is bat crap crazy (like Mad King crazy), and I wonder if Jaime knows this?

The popular theory from book nerds is that Dani's oldest brother Rhaegar is Jon Snow's father. Rhaegar died before the show started. I think the Mad King (Rhaegar and Dani's dad) is Jon Snow's father. In those flashbacks with young Ned/Doogie Howser - that tower was protected by the Kings Guqrd. And if I've pieced everything together correctly, Rhaeger died while the Mad King was still alive, therefore he never became king. And there's all that other Red Priestess **** about King's blood, etc, etc

I do think LittleFinger and Sansa will be roadblocks along the way, but ultimately I think Jon, Dani, and Tyrion are the 3 that will have to defeat the White Walkers.

I think we didn't hear his name, because his name isn't Jon, but maybe something more Targaryen, and would indicate that Lyanna and Rhaegar were married and she was not "kidnapped" as Ned was led to believe. I think that's the next "tease" on the show. Is Jon still a bastard, where Lyanna and Rhaegar weren't marreid, or his is the next true heir? WOuld they try and pair him up with Dani? Last night the topic of who'd she marry came up, so maybe Jon will marry his Aunt Dani.

Sansa I think it completely on Jon's side, but knows Littlefinger could be a problem.

I must have worded my original question wrong about the name...I meant why wasn't the father's name mentioned, ie, when Lyanna was whispering to Ned? What was the few seconds of no sound for? The show confirmed Lyanna was the mother, why nothing about the father? I have not doubt it's a Targaryian (WTF is wrong with Jones? Smith? etc) I'm just wondering if it's not possible that the Mad King is his father?

Because if she told Ned him a bastard's name, then we would know this season that she and Rhaegar weren't married and Jon was still a bastard (though a Targ bastard and not a Stark bastard), but is she told him a royal name, called him something like Jon Targaryen, then we'd know that Jon is not a bastard and is the rightful heir to the thrones.

I think next season will be them asking that question. Is Jon royal or bastard?

Why would she tell him a bastard name??? I'm guessing the seconds of silence were Lyanna telling Ned (blank) is this baby's Daddy. I wonder why the show intentionally left out the name of that baby"s (JS) daddy? The only 2 logical fathers are Rhaegar and the Mad King, neither which are a bastard.

Because they want us to question his claim to the throne next year. Does he have right before Dani, or does Dani have right before him. If Rhaegar got Lyanna preggers and wasn't married to her, then Jon is a bastard. But if, as some speculate, that Rhaegar and Lyanna eloped, then Jon is royal birth and the next true King.

How would Jon pass his Aunt? Now if he was her sister....
And why do they have to be royal born? Didn't the Lannister's kill dozens of Barratheon bastards for fear of their claims?

Also, they could have still said who was Jon's father, without saying whether or not he was a bastard or royal born. If they said it was Rhaeger's son, we still wouldn't know if he was royal or bastard. But they did not tell us the father's name.

Saw a graphic released by HBO drawing out the relationships between different folks around the time of the overthrow of the Mad King. It showed that Rheagar is Snow's father. I'd attach the link if I still had it handy.

Probably won't help him feel better.
It did. I saw it yesterday and slept like a log last night. Now I can't prove this, but I'm pretty sure HBO released this info solely because of me. You're welcome, World.

I'm probably going to have to go back and re-watch the whole thing again with this information at hand - it'll help keeping everything straight.

I think you are right. In the NY Daily News article I saw, they had a transcript of a producers' meeting at HBO prior to the release of the graphic:

Weiss: What's that accountant in WV whining about this time?
Martin: Apparently, it wasn't clear to him who Jon Snow's dad is based on Lyanna's location and fear for his safety.
Benioff: Please tell me we aren't going to release something to spoon-feed the answer to this guy?
Martin: Normally, I would agree that we shouldn't do that, but this guy has been emailing me every 15 minutes. Annoying little cuss.
Benioff: Send it to your spam folder. Why is this my problem?
Martin: I'm an old. What the [deleted] is a spam folder?
Weiss: He's just going to stir up more people to bug George even if George figures out some technology this side of a sword.
Benioff: Again, why is this my problem? It'll make the guy hungrier for the next season - maybe even stir up more interest with all of his whining to his friends.
Weiss: Here's my idea. Let's release some insane looking graphic that basically gives a who's who of the Mad King overthrow. It won't look like we're knuckling under to this guy, but it'll shut him up and give George time to not finish writing the book he's been "working" on for the last decade.
Martin: [Deleted] you, jack wagon!
Weiss: Is it untrue?
Martin: Just shut the kid up.
Benioff: I can go for the goofy graphic. Let's do it.

I assume you copied and pasted this, but I like to think you spent 20-30 minutes typing this up only to post it with this minor grammatical error that, in your mind, completely invalidates your entire joke and thus ruins your 3 day weekend.

Good day, sir.

Like it would take 20-30 minutes to type that up, hypothetically. I would post the link, but I'm an old.
